What is worse than a Laguna II?

A Laguna II with a 2.0 IDE engine

What is amazing is that, a ) its actually working, b ) people are actually bidding for it.

Here is what our resident French car expert says about them in much better words than I possibly can - http://autoshite.com/topic/23805-pointless-engine-combos/?p=953765

Good point! Possibly why people are bidding.

Or Mr Bo11cx really has completely lost it and is bidding on it too...

Posted

I won't be bidding on that IDE, I am impressed though, I see the seller has been using it as his family bus for 8 years!!!!!!

He should get something like a BRM V16 for his next car.

What's that stuck to the dashboard?

There's most probably a row of about 120 different warning lights under that bit of trim and the previous owner decided to use a bit of no nails and laminate to cover them up.

I was reading up on the IDE engines after looking at this thread. It seems they took the basis of the Di engine Mitsubishi had developed, threw away all the good stuff and replaced it with some shite the cobbled together out of sticklbrix and drinking staws.  After a few hours they said job done, went into production then the cars just started randomly shutting down without warning leaving folk stranded all over the place and kicking Renault in it;s already swollen CSi plums.

These IDE efforts sound like a real low point, even for Renault

Someone's removed the bulb from the credibility warning light.

PSA's HPi engine is just as bad

This C5 HPi is only £199, WCPGW? I won't post any pictures of it because Citroen dropped a major bollock with the styling of these, they look terrible.

Posted

Oh I don't know, they're inoffensive enough. £199 and it drive well.

LOL!

As the owner of a Gooner2 I can safely say the dashboard wouldn't take that much extra weight.

Posted

Sorry, but that front end is offensive.

Lies!!

I actually quite like them tbh. Not as striking, but still not bad looking. Different enough to not look like every other Audi/BMW/etc.

Thanks to this and SOC’s thread I feel a sense of wonder and amazement whenever I see a Laguna II in daily use by a ‘normal’ person.

AutoData reckons 5.1 hours to change its turbo.

When the Renault Service manual says this, you know it could be a bit of a fight:

NOTE: to slacken the turbocharger mounting nuts more easily on the exhaust manifold, it is useful to spray a releasing agent on the nuts when they are still hot, just before removal.

I do wonder if its just a split vacuum hose, wastegate rod loose or something like that though. He gives no further details on the fault unfortunately.

Oooh that looks appealing

You are a very sick man MrB........... very sick indeed......

Mr Bol, Renner have ya by the Loghoonas, ye got it bad.

Are these things as shite as folk would have us believe, or is it like Rover K Series, Triumph Stag's etc, if you know your way round them and how to deal with the foibles, you can get a bit of a bargain.

Methinks that might be what Mr Testes is trying to find out...!!

Posted

I must say having driven that turbo one for a few hours I found it to be a very agreeable way to travel about - amazingly comfortable, quiet, smooth and good at covering ground in a way that I imagine a Xantia Activa or XM to be. I'm sure being developed on those long smooth fast French motorways gives these heaps a certain interesting character. I think they are a sharp looker too. I know they have a well-earned rep for appalling reliability but at the £200 end of the market, and accepting I am going to have to bust out the spanners and diagnostic gizmo, I am trying to look past that and hoping to see what Renault were aiming for....!

Red Gooner should be hitting the road next week as long as the flippin diff hasnt fallen out onto the road while its been parked up. Can't wait!

A turbo pez often hits the mark, they don't seem to have the boost cranked up like a TD does, so there's way less on/off action. Both my Saab 2.0t and a Fiesta Ecoboost I had as a hire car were really quite enjoyable for everything from mooching around town to doing a bit of yobbo hoonage, and far less frustrating than a boosted diesel.

This.

They have known faults, but they're all pretty easy to fix now, or preventative maintenance will fix.

From my research...

Engines & gearboxes:

  • IDE engine - AVOID!!!!
  • DP0 autobox (1.8/2.0 pez) - ok if not that old, a valve inside can die - part not that expensive, not that hard to replace in the guna iirc. Can be a ticking timebomb. Used on a lot of other Renaults and PSA (AL4 in PSA). However the Scenic that Kiltox has got now, has 152k on the clock and works perfectly ok.
  • SU1 autobox (2.0T/v6 pez) - AW55-50 in another name - used on volvos/saab/vauxhall/ford/others. Does have issues, but well known and plenty of places can fix. Not stressed that hard in this application.
  • 5 speed gearbox - solid
  • 6 speed gearbox - has some occasional issues, but a lot of modern 6 speeders do. Not regular enough problems to be that alarming though
  • 1.8/2.0 pez - Solid engines. Dephasers can go, however if oil changes are kept up regularly they shouldn't be a problem. Renault say should be replaced with a cambelt change (like why you would change a water pump). If aux belts snap, they take the cambelt out - but again Renault said you should change when doing cambelt, people often cheap out and don't. Dephasers on these engines don't cause a FTP, just sound awful and crap fuel economy. No solid reports of one ever failing enough to kill the engine. Most people change them as the noise is loud and embarrassing! See Bo11ox video earlier in this thread. Crank sensor can cause FTP - £20 odd part.
  • 1.9dci - Has issues with turbos and EGRs. Its suspected most turbo issues are from sticking/stuck EGRs that cause the turbo to overheat/over rev/etc. Keep the EGR clean/replace it (cheap part), oil changed regularly and they do high miles. Crank sensor again issues - £20 odd for new part.
  • 2.0dci - Nissan unit. Camchain driven. Seems to be a tough engine.
  • v6 - ES9/L7X - used on the 406/c5/clio v6/others. Very solid lump, no real issues. Little things like rocker cover leaks, but can be fixed with instant gasket/etc.
Electrics:
  • Cards - people sit on them and bend the internals. Over time this breaks solder joints and damages them. Plenty of £25 eBay guys who will resolder and fix the cards for you. Auto lock smiths charge around £100 for new ones
  • Card reader - the contacts inside can fail and also dust gets in which can jam it. Replacement ones are plug and play, without a lot of faff needed to change. Higher spec models have keyless start+entry, so you don't even need to put the card in or even press the buttons to unlock the doors.
  • UCH/Body computer - this lives in the passenger compartment. If you have a sunroof, the drain tubes can bung up. This leads the water to overflow onto the UCH causing a failure to start & whole manor of problems. UCH not cheap to replace (proper Renault diag tool job as immo in it), however most survive the drenching if dried out. Best thing to do is clean the drain tubes before this happens! Video on this thread somewhere on how to do it.
  • Window regulators - usual bollocks on modern cars - plastic clips break/cables fray/etc. Parts cheap on eBay. Also newer ones have window modules that can fail. Replacements now can be had for £30 odd.
  • Xenon lights - the ballast module is unhelpfully under the light. Water can get in causing the light to die. Renault want big money for new modules. But plenty of aftermarket parts available now. Often can be dried out to fix. Sealing the connector at the bottom can solve this happening again.
  • Random wierdness/crazyness - Low/weak batteries.
Other:
  • Rear suspension bushings - Used to be a nightmare job. However if you buy the right special tool (now available cheaply on eBay), its massively easier and quicker. Use genuine or big brand parts, otherwise you'll be replacing them every year.
Apparently the newer the better, as they fixed a lot of the problems over its build cycle. Apparently the phase 2's are a leap of build quality over the original phase 1.

All above information gleaned from the tinerwebs. Probably other stuff I haven't remembered. R9UKE is probably the best person to cover anything tbh.

Yup I've seen that one. Looks in excellent condition. It's expensive, but given if that work has all been done, then there is unlikely any more that needs doing ...wait, its a Laguna II, stuff will always need doing.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2005-RENAULT-LAGUNA-INITIALE-3-0-V6-SILVER-AUTO-FSH-/262341139910

Tempted to make a offer on it. The one thing that puts me off? Silver. I dislike silver cars. (Yet I seem to keep owning them)

But then actually, imo, it actually looks quite good in Silver.

Kinda just waiting for one to come up that isn't 3-4 hours away, as I'm struggling to get free time as it is, let alone travel >8hrs round trip to see something that may be shit. Also I would really, really like a Phase 2 estate - but can't be picky on this. So far all the phase 2's that have been for sale have been 55reg and earlier, which is very lucky in itself (tax).

So get this.

Your 'guna has been on eBay for a couple of weeks, still unsold.

What do you do?

List it on Gumtree for £250 more!

https://www.gumtree.com/p/renault/2005-renault-laguna-initiale-3.0-v6-silver-auto-fsh/1161282600

Maybe that extra £250 is to cover the hassle from Gumtree mongs?

I was hoping that after a couple of weeks, he'd reduce the price. I'm guessing not.

The price is too high for a Laguna II but it sure has had a lot done to it. New coil packs and a cambelt too. Even an autobox oil change. A classic "no expense spared". Wait for the price to drop or make him an offer. Mr Bol lost a good one at just under a grand so the price has got a way to go yet.
