Would it be possible/worth trying to get it MOT'd? It's definitely going to need some welding but in theory if you just got it done good enough for an MOT then at least you can use it or sell it on easier?

Posted

Yes, probably, and there are moves afoot in that direction.  If it goes ahead I may very well keep it, but at the moment I feel it'll be like getting a car back after it's been stolen.  I just can't view it in the same light I did "before."

It's got to be the best way to go all considered, providing it's not too costly. At least you can run around in it and make your mind up after you've been using it a bit. If you did end up getting rid it's going to be much easier to sell with mot and it's still got all its spares.

Every single one securely fitted!

Hit some technical issues and potentially Hgf on the ranger but we're nearly home... c116a97d5c2e13e9085bf6439623d67f.jpg55e7cfe17332f1a51269036be9ff5fca.jpg

Wow things change quick round here. Wasn't that Ranger a different colour last week?

Good news on the Rover Rescue mission, well done.  Commiserations on the Ranger though...presumably we'll next find out: Can a Rover 213 tow a modern pickup truck?

Discovered the coolant was pressurising at Tebay. Put around 4 litres in it on the way back. I'm home now.

Bugger about the Ranger. At least the engine's pretty straightforward if you can be arsed changing the HG.

Am I getting it right that FOAD is doing the welding and the car will have to be delivered down to Eddy at some point?

Can I volunteer for the drive back down to Eddyland?

This. I guess your doing the work for Eddy?

Bit of a bitch about the HGF but at least your home.

I prefer the ranger in the new speckled finish; are you going to fix it?

The last one of these I worked on was entirely sculpted from filler in that same place. That car had a leopard skin effect headlining too. Not sure Eddy would like that though!

This will be lovely when it's sorted.

So in case you hadn't guessed, I offered to give Eddy a hand in getting his Rover welded up. I had initially planned on using the Transit to bring it up the road but with a knackered wheel bearing, it wasn't going to happen today. I thought I'd take the Ranger if I needed to A-frame the Rover, I hadn't realised it was an auto so the A-frame would have been useless anyway.

I got down to Dalton around 1pm, Eddy had kindly insured the car and handed me some money to cover fuel and welding consumables. I called up my local mot place to book it in for a test (200 miles away).

The Rover drove nicely all the way home but I noticed at Tebay there was some coolant dripping from the Ranger, on closer inspection the radiator cap had come undone a quarter turn. I filled the radiator and then filled some plastic bottles. I left the engine running with the cap off and the water at the top of the radiator continued to bubble.

I stopped a couple of times to keep an eye on it and only a few miles from home the temp shot up and it needed another 2 litres of water.

I'm planning on getting it fixed.

I got the Rover up in the air.

It's pretty bad, I can see why the previous garage couldn't find time to get around to it, it's difficult figuring out where to start. It needs inner and outer sills, Jacking points, rear arches and some sections of the floor welded.

I have some panels.

Let's hope I can find some good metal to weld to!

It really is quite nice to drive, part of me wishes I'd concocted some kind of deal to become the new owner but for the most part I'm happy to a part of it on the road to recovery...

Brilliant job for stepping in. What a shame these things are so insanely good at rotting horribly. I bet that ten years ago there was nowhere it didnt look factory fresh and all.

Ditto on the first two sentences. Well done FOAD.

Father-in-law scrapped his ostensibly tidy E-reg 213 back in 2000/01 due to rot in that area.

I was surprised (but pleased, of course) to find that this local one got through another MoT after my photo earlier in the year:

Good on you, Scotty, I was hoping that's what was going on.

Well done Scott for stepping up to the challenge. That looks friggin nasty mind you.

Must have helped stick the official number of loads of these back together years ago. They were amazing at rotting which is a shame as they're such nice cars to drive.

Anyway an excellent save I'm sure you'll manage to make it all good again in no time.
