ST 200 clutch advice please.

Remember that Mondeo ST200 my mate at work was selling?

 

Well, he sold it to another one of our drivers who was desperate for transport.

It went straight through the mot.

I've noticed it sitting in the car park in the same spot for about a week now.

I saw Gary tonight for the first time in a couple of weeks and asked him about it.

Clutch problem.

It has got a pedal, selects all gears ok, including reverse, but has no drive - nothing.

Any ideas what this might be chaps?

 

Gary has refunded the money to our colleague now.

Either the clutch friction lining has broken up, or something has happened to the diff like that driveless Rover 214 that I had I reckon

Could it be the driveshaft?

 

I had an identical problem like this with a MK3 Mondeo a few years ago.

No drive is a sign of diff failure but usually the innards make a bid for freedom.

It's just sitting there in the car park feeling sorry for itself.

Full years mot too. Sounded nice when he fired it up last night.

these are a shit to change the clutch on. mate did one at home, took a week.

Are these a DMF? I didnt think the Mk2 mondeo had those things.

No DMF, you really need a 2 post lift to swap a clutch on one of these with decent facilities. Messing about the driveway, with a socket set doing this job would be utter misery. Depending what rear arches are like I'd look for a used ST24 unit, if the arches are goosed id be inclined to break it.

Tight for access because of engine and exhausts, and it's a mondeo so subframe out as well. It's a total PITA.

 

It's worth checking that it hasn't snapped the offside driveshaft, because they do that too, and if the pedal feels ok it might be that. You can normally spot a failed clutch easily enough because the pedal feels odd and there is often a nasty lingering smell of burnt linings as well.

 

As bren says, they can spit the diff too but there is normally a hole in the case and oil all over the floor when that happens.

In brief it involves dropping the subframe after undoing the suspension, you can drop the subframe down on one side and draw the gearbox out but in doing so you run the risk of damaging the subframe alignment.

How much for a garage to swap the gearbox/diff ? And is the car worth it ?

If the inner driveshaft had come out of its clip it would make a right racket as you took up drive I would have thought. I'd have thought labour on the gearbox for someone that does it regular would be 4-6 hours at a guess, I paid similar but it was on 4cyl.

The OS one tends to break in the middle, near the bearing mounted to the back of the engine. Quiet, but no drive.

If it's a driveshaft problem won't the speedo still read even though car doesn't move? Son's 53 reg dieselly mondeo had a speedo sender in the gearbox.

When civic DS went the speedo rose and you could hear the clacking.

Likely the diff then. From what I recall the ST200 had a shorter ratio box, hence the fractionally quicker acceleration. Could be wrong about this, though I would think an ST24 box would fit. I'd take a good look at the arches before deciding anything, the late mk2s used to rot bad round the filler cap, arches and then the back of the sills used to go. If the arches and the filler surround are gone I'd bin it. Repairing these areas is a real swine to let in successfully.

Problem is, we are both night drivers, so I only ever see it in the dark, so quite useless really.

I did see it during the summer, and it looked quite nice then, although the rear arches are not faultless.

Also I'd check what the bottom arms are like, if they are clanking like fuck I'd sack it off. IIRC these are unique to the ST200 and the cougar.

I would imagine everything else is ok.

It passed the mot just before it lost drive.

You might struggle to get an ST200 box but the ST24 might be ok, from what I remember the earlier 24v models had different gearing to the later models slightly quicker acceleration. The clutch should be hydraulic on all but the very first Mondeos which were cable, but as the 24v didn't come out till 95? That shouldn't affect you.
