The ground isnt frozen where you are is it Mr Shadow?

A vinyl roof effect can be had cheaply with a rattle can of stone chip black (giving the orange peel effect) and a couple of lengths of adhesive window draft excluder to mimic the seams.

There's a lot in this thread to be shocked about.

Its flipping class. Its like Ive gone back in time to 1978.

we used to use metal bin lids,in 70s in belfast, 8) have sent a email to one firm to see if they have slam panel, otherwise seems hard to get, even rimmer bros do not stock...have spied a black fridge freezer, side panels look good...

Except it was probably some rolled up newspaper and a dollop of Holts Contour...

I hope you're painting straight on top of that P40 without sanding it back. Snap off the really sharp bits, pick a non-metallic blue close enough to the current colour, don't mask, spray, job done.

Jesus, got to be honest I think I'd rather drive round in a massive flashing LED-covered horse fanny, but hopefully when you get the slam panel riveted or arc welded it should be a lot better.

Bizarre - has it been upside down in the Irish Sea for 18 months?

I wonder what caused the roof to go like that?

Auto and french is not.

Does it make a difference if the gearbox is actually German?

Not when bolted to Frenchness.

Disagree. 607 has 170,000 miles and has not stuffed it's gearbox.  604 is 40 years old and also has not stuffed it's gearbox.

However if you are stupid enough to buy something with an AL4 transmission (made by Germans out of chocolate)....

Supoib.

Weren't these a CVT box? It's probably fairly nippy*

* an 8/10 on the HH-R scale of speed

the cvt box was from volvo, few more bodges has to change os lower balljoint, was going to change whole arm,but the front bolt would not play ball and was going to snap, had to grind of lower rivets, bolt on balljoint, than to get big chassis bolt back to tighten up,had to cut into front chassis leg, hold the bolt with chisel from turning, than torque up bolt, thank god it did not snap, than mig weld chassis,!,will get picture tomorrow,..will paint on some zinc 182 grey primer,as used on the roof, looking slightly better.....done the oil filter change, screwdriver in filter that shifted it.put euros finest filter on £1.10 crosland,

Maybe the previous owner kept his collection of sulphuric acid on the roof when the car was in storage.

My GTi rusted in the same place - back of the roof!

The Metro seems to rust the other way round, top to bottom.

I don't know if the stock Metros have same suspension as GTi but handling was great and it felt so solid. Was a proper 1.4 16v, I miss it.

16v GTi and I think the GTa have additional shockers fitted as well as the hydragas suspension, they are slightly lower as standard too, only marginally but it seems enough.

That said I always found the Metro handled very much like the original Mini - like a large go-kart - and was very chuckable.

Fatha_Sporty had a GTa auto when he lived in Spain. That was solid underneath but properly Crusty around the sunroof. Ended up getting scrapped before he came back. Remember having a go of it when I was over there. Was a proper nippy little thing with the CVT box.
