First off a MASSIVE thank you to Alex for being a nutter and driving overnight with a timely arrival just after I had walked the dogs.

His escapades are here:

One of the purposes of the trip was this.

post-17457-0-90393800-1534419949_thumb.jpg

After a coffee session, food was offered and declined (twice) he was dropped at the local bus station and I trundled up the road to the Workshop.

A very quick look over as I was in my clean clothes. Well clean for me anyway.

It has an engine of some type fed by petrol.

post-17457-0-00741500-1534420030_thumb.jpg

There were some contents.

post-17457-0-81086500-1534420057_thumb.jpg

These were evicted.

post-17457-0-23866800-1534420143_thumb.jpg

That is better.

post-17457-0-61318800-1534420159_thumb.jpg

During the removal these scruffy bits were noticed.

Just after noticing these this was noticed.

A GL, my old 309 was the lowest, a GE, I wonder what extras this got.

It has a key with easily identifiable fob.

I looked in my stash of collected guide materials but am lacking a suitable one.

Faults, all of which were told to me before any discussions about a new home are.

CV joint is not at all happy and upsets my mechanical sympathy so this will need sorted.

Drivers door window doesn't move. The handle goes through the motions and stops at the 'top' and 'bottom' so a look inside the door is needed.

It is far better than expected and is very comfortable.

Questions, I have been looking for a driveshaft for it and my prefered supplier (J&R Driveshafts as they are cheap) don't appear to list one for a 1.1. Could anyone give me a pointer in the right direction?

Secondly, does anyone have a spare 205 Haynes before I look on ebay?

Posted

Wernt tge 1.1 and 1.3 driveshafts the same, and the diesel and gti ones the same? Could be wrong like, been a while since I had a 205.

Posted

It is indeed.

The car is a 1988 I guess they didn't change everything for the following year.

If its a TU engined one, which it surely is, I dont think they changed at all.

Posted

EBay says that one doesn't fit.

I'm sure* eBay know everything about 205's so investigation shall occur probably next week.

Thank you for finding that.

I have a HBOL which can be loaned. I can also vouch for J&R, mine have survived my utter lack of mechanical sympathy perfectly!

Yeah, ebay used to say that 205 bits didnt fit 309s too. But they did. Try emailing your reg to the seller to check compatibility. Hopefully they have a better grasp of fitment. Sure all petrol TU engined shafts are interchangables though.

Have you got a handbook? Think I have one lying around. Think I gave my Haynes away though.

I have a handbook, service history and lots of receipts!

Not much need for a handbook as it doesn't have much to work out what it does.

You kept that one quiet!

Not mine, so I have had nothing* to do with its arrival.

Is that a completely different engine?

The look of the two are quite different

Looks like a 1.6? Same block as the 1.6gti?

Usually in autos?

I thought autos were all carbed, hence the bulgier bonnet prized by people doing engine swaps?

Yours is a TU engine - the other one is an XU engine.

Driveshafts from any TU model (1.0, 1,1, 1.4 - all from 1988) should fit fine.  XU and XUD ones won't fit as they're different fitment at the diff end.

309 driveshafts are slightly longer than 205 ones and likely to bottom out.

You forgot the choke I broke yesterday and the seat I tried to clean and made ten times worse.

They are not faults, just character.

It is French after all.

So I have the Octavia to sort and the 205 to look over but I have been trying to sort out the 'workshop' for a while and everything is just a mess and I spend ages looking for stuff so I have to sort it.

I have a few work benches but no a lot of storage. This bench I acquired from Glasgow Royal many years ago and I got some steel cupboards from a neighbours garage when the family sold everything off after he passed away.

I have had this plan and the ingredients for it for about three years so...

The first one took quite a while to figure out where everything needed to be and obviously finding the stuff I needed.

post-17457-0-23679500-1534524487_thumb.jpg

They are bolted to metal that I have welded to the three main bars.

post-17457-0-17761900-1534524516_thumb.jpg

The next one ready when I find some more metal, the gap between is perfectly placed for the vice that is currently bolted to the piece of worktop that lives on it.

post-17457-0-96230400-1534524499_thumb.jpg

I do hope that I can then actually find stuff and do actual car fixing but I am sure I can find another delaying tactic.

I've been tasked with getting a series LR for my BiL. Trying to find a sensible one within 300 miles has been difficult, so consider me interested. Maybe I could come for a viewing.

Annoyingly, I sold a couple of 88s bout two years ago for cheapness. There's a thread on here somewhere.

Those Octavias give me the fear, of all the cars I've owned they've given me the most trouble, most people get on well with them though. I spotted a 1.9SDI estate earlier which must be quite grim.

Time for a look over the 205 today.

Drivers window doesn't wind down so off with the door card.

Look inside.

post-17457-0-53039500-1534776718_thumb.jpg

That looks not right.

post-17457-0-71663600-1534776734_thumb.jpg

Compared to the passenger side.

post-17457-0-91289800-1534776750_thumb.jpg

CV joint noise investion

post-17457-0-82908500-1534776768_thumb.jpg

Slight interlude, the boot lock/handle was loose so mounted it correctly.

post-17457-0-78777700-1534776783_thumb.jpg

Passenger side gaiter is holed which has caused it to be knackered.

post-17457-0-78964000-1534776797_thumb.jpg

Messy around the gearbox, this is after a big clean up.

post-17457-0-51015500-1534776813_thumb.jpg

Driveshaft was found for £70 or both for £75 from elsewhere so both were ordered.

So the drivers door window doesn't have a channel on the bottom of it so I am looking for one of those if anyone has one, I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Might be easier just getting a whole door off a breaker?

Out, Silver 172, now with sporty_shite.

In, Jag XJ6 Sport, from sporty_shite.

In 51 plate Learner Clio.

In, Blue 182. Facebook special advert.

Out, Jag XJ6 Sport, now with SiC and getting some more love.

Out, Blue 182, went to Copart as I didn't want to face the stream of rubbish FOAD is experiencing.

In, Octavia 4X4 turbo. Yet to get proper time on it.

In, Peugeot 205, from Alex. (not mine but I am the responsible* adult* in charge*)

Out, Series 2a Land Rover, (Father Jack) due to be leaving at the weekend.

Head is in a much better place with the tasks at hand now.

Jobs to do:

Get the Octavia ready and MOTed.

Sort the 205 for use.

Do loads to the Minor.

Do quite a lot to the Toledo.

Do something to the SS1.

No doubt I will find something utterly knackered that I cannot resist but the TTT app has been temporarily uninstalled :)
