Potential 92 sierra rs cosworth

Yes I would hide the reg otherwise someone might beat you to the DVLA for the V5.

(he says as he licks the end of an envelope and attaches a stamp for a letter to Swansea).

Teh doovla do have a thing where you can send them a fiver to find out the current registered keeper, write them a nice letter explaining the circumstances and they'll probably send you the details they have.

Personally I'd try this to attempt to trace the keeper before just applying for the V5 for what is technically someone's car, as mentioned earlier the circumstances around it could be sensitive.

I wonder if it was laid low by a mechanical malady? Cossie is no different than any other sierra - they rot for fun.

Being stood for that length of time will not have done it any favours.

Quite poignant if the owner is no longer with us.

I believe you need to be the registered keeper to use that facility , or just be a horrible twatlike parking firm

Don't get your hopes up too high mate - a car worth about £2k - £3k in that rough state is going to have belonged to someone at some point, especially in its current 'long term' surroundings.

As Omegod said, you need to be the registered keeper to do this. It's a £5 service where DooVLA dig into their rustiest filing cabinets and make photocopies of all the old V5's for your vehicle. I still can't believe that they offer anything for a fiver tbh; I reckon it's a matter of time before they add a 60000% tax to it, or bin the service.

As for trying to track down the Saph owner - I tried to trace the owner of one of my own old vehicles around 18 months ago. I wrote to DooVLA claiming that I'd 'found some old service records and receipts' for the car, that I was an owner from a few years previous, and that I would be doing the owner a favour. DooVLA replied stating that they wouldn't give me the address details, but would forward my letter to the owner, with the instructions that the owner would would need to reply to them.

Nothing came of it, and I think I was 'lucky' that they entertained my tall story. However, it's a possibility. You blurred those number plates yet?

Soz chaps, I think we've got our wires crossed here, on proper computer now so can link.

You can request details of a vehicle’s registered keeper and certain other information from DVLA if you have ‘reasonable cause’. You can also request information held by DVLA about you.

Why you might make a request

‘Reasonable cause’ can include:

  • tracing the owner of an abandoned vehicle

I think it is actually the same form (V888) as used for the history of a car you own, but it's only £2.50 to get the name and address of the keeper, and yes it's the same mechanism used by private parking companies.

Mr omegod is suitably humbled at his incorrectness, i'm genuinely surprised they will cough the info that easily though

It all depends what you want it for.

I believe that "I want to buy this car" isn't what they would consider reasonable cause, luckily for the OP tracing the owner of an abandoned car is.

Generally it seems quite hit and miss as to whether they actually give out the info, but if they don't, at least he's tried?

Hit and miss is darn right. I attempted to rescue an abandoned G reg Proton from a local car park, starting point being the venerable V888...got my form, my cheque & a letter sent back to me explaining that my interest in the vehicle wasn't considered reasonable. It disappeared from the car park mere days after receiving my reply.

Fuckers.

I just HPI'd the car at work, all clear with the current registered keeper since 12/02/2005. Surely there will be some records on base reference the reg and owner? If not, bit of a longshot this, but is it possible to get a duplicate MOT with the MOT number? The MOT number of 4806 5726 6059 is supplied on the history check. If so, a garage that completes MOT's or even VOSA on the phone (if you ask them nicely) may be able to tell you which garage MOT'd the car, and that garage may have a record of the owner.

I can't beleive that on a Military base, they don't log the vehicles/owners onsite, specially if they are permanentally based there.

Ref the MOT point by AlexG, no driver info is shared at an MOT, unless the owner is known to the garage, longshot, but possible I guess....

Posted

Yeah, that's what I meant. If you can trace the garage that MOT'd the car their personal database may hold the customer details.

I'd imagine most garages, when asked if they could provide contact details for a Sierra Cosworth they mot'd ten years ago, which is now 'abandoned' in a car park, would tell you to jog on...

Had something similar with a Suzuki GS650 motorbike at work-it had been in the basement since at least 1999, and was covered in thick dust. I asked around and no one knew where it came from. A e-mail round the whole company did not illicit a reply, Short story is it the V5 I applied for came back with previous keeper name not being known to anyone, and the address was now a supermarket. I stuck £50 quid to the local hospice, and gave it to my mate who wanted a bike to restore, which he did. I'll try and find the before and after photos, as I do have them somewhere.

Good luck with your search for the owner, and I hope the back story is not tragic.

Nice... Was it a GT or a Katana?

Whilst you re probably correct, it depends how you approach the situation. By good fortune the garage may just know/remember the owner (yes it was 8 years ago but how many Cosworths come through the door?) and may lend a sympathetic ear. They may be reluctant to pass you the customer details, but if they're a friendly local garage they may agree to phone the owner on your behalf and leave your mobile number. If you want to claim ownership for a car and you've explored all these avenues, you're in a much stronger position morally to take it on.

I have now got the name of the owner. Twas on the computer system in the guard room. The bloke who gave me the name has enquired about it before and he said the owner was asking around £2000 for it.

Will send him a nice email later. If i can get the price down a bit i may be interested as my budget isn't too big at the moment. But the offer may be extended onto here if not. I imagine there would be some interest on here if he does want to sell?

Jesus, engines' worth 2 bags on it's own. ...

If your serious about the charity ideal how about seeing if a few of the squadies will chip in then donate to help for heroes..... I've read somewhere

Some of the injured service men compete in various motor sports, this could/would be an ideal project for them.

This. The greedy part of me wants to suggest you buy it for <£2k, then bosh it on eBay and make a fat profit from a desparate Ford fanboi. However, this is a much nicer idea and will benefit others if you don't personally wish to make money on it. Well done for tracking down the owner. Would still be intrigued as to why he left it rot for ten odd years...

If you do decide to donate it to H4H as a potential track car, I'm fairly sure they wouldn't be keeping the interior or the original wheels anyway.... just saying  :-D

If you have a genuine reason, then the DVLA will give you the name and address of the current keeper.

Just be honest on the Form.

Then apply for the V5.

Posted

Then have it valued by RSwankersClub and write a letter recorded delivery to last known address, giving them 90 days to respond or you'll consider it abandoned, and if that is the case you will place the value in a high interest account / government bond, and when it matures you'll give the cash to Charity or to the original owner.

You might regret it, if you let it go.

I ALWAYS wanted one of them, but no time or space for a restoration project.

£2k is cheap. Assuming it has the engine in a rebuildable state. I'd be inclined to make sure it's a real one. You don't want to pay £2k for a Sapphire 1.8 LX with a fibre sports kit on it.

Jack it up, check the regular rot spots etc, these can be a much bigger job than they appear looking good on the top but an absolute weldathon underneath, find out why it was parked up and forgot about in the first place, it is worth 2k all day long for breaking

Mate, for two grand I'll have it if you don't. Just say the word.
