Potential 92 sierra rs cosworth

I have a potential new car. This thing has been sitting in the officers mess car park for a long time. So long in fact that it has a large amount of moss etc growing on it.

I have checked the plate and it ran out of tax and mot in 2007. No one knows who owns it but i will get the car pass people to check their data base.

If they can't find who owns it where would i go to find out? It is just sitting there rotting and i would love to see it back on the road.

Does anyone know anything about them with regards to rough cost for a working example? One thought would be to restore it and flog it to raise money for charity etc.

Any tips on how i can find the owner etc and how complicated these cars are would be greatly appreciated. I will endeavour to get pictures up later

This is the only one at the moment. But you can see the amount of stuff growing on it

Why would anyone abandon that?

Whereabouts is it (exactly)? And what time do security go on their tea break?

No idea. But it's been in that spot for at least 5 years.

Looking inside its full of stuff including two wheels with new tyres on the back seat

It's on my army base in view of the armed guards at the gate. I really want it but finding out who owns it is tricky. The car pass has completely faded in the sun

I knew someone would ask.

As a non-runner (and looking like it does in the picture) I bet it's still worth five large absolute minimum.

I'm just heading over to take some snaps of it. I'll try and do it so this phone doesn't turn them 90 degrees when i upload them

Hopefully these pictures give you a bit more of an idea on the state of the car. The interior looks good just the outside is obviously awful. No idea if it runs etc

The fact it had a pass in the window in the first place suggests that at one point, the owner gave a shit, and didn't wish to offload their motor onto someone else. Having said that, if you're forces, who knows what's happened to the owner... It does seem odd how a valuable classic Ford like that has been left to sit there, but I'm sure there's a story which will correlate. I'd get onto the parking police or whatever their official name is, and get them to check their database. I'd personally be blurring out those number plates as well...

One doesn't not dump a Cossie, even 8 years ago. The current owner has owned it since February 2005 i seems. Those 7 spoke softline alloys are worth a bomb on their own.

Exactly why it's puzzling. It's not even as if it's used as a track car as it really hasn't moved for at least 5 years. (i say 5 because that's the longest anyone I've spoken to here has been here)

I suspect it has been in that exact spot since 2007. It's just a shame it's wasting away there

Somewhere deep down, I have a feeling this belonged to a young single squaddie who was lost in action sadly, and the family didn't even know he owned it

An under used cosworth can grow moss like that in 6 months.

Ask me how I know.

Posted

That's a possibility. However it is in the officers mess car park so must have been an officer. And we only lost 2 officers in Afghan and Iraq from this base.

That's why I'm thinking of doing it for charity etc rather then personal gain. Just in case this is the reason

First step would be to apply for a V5, not to gain ownership but it's the only way to find out the current keepers details as if they don't answer the letter DVLA send them you'll get the V5 with their details listed as previous keeper.

You can go on the hunt for the owner once you have these details , could be a variety of reasons it's been left. Perhaps someone had a nasty divorce and buggered off presuming ex wife had flogged it?  somone shifted posting without having time to sort it/fix it and assumes it's been scrapped by now?

I'm intrigued to say the least as it's worth 5 figures in pieces

If you're doing it for charity the best possible thing is a raffle on here. I'll have 1-58 please.

I had the worst, shonkiest, most filler laden pile of h reg "converted" to 2wd shit you have ever seen in my lock up. Sold, over the phone, for 1500 quid. All the guy asked is if it ran. They are gold. On toast.

I'd laugh if you managed to open the bonnet and someone had swapped a dead 2.0 cosworth motor for a 1.8td lump.

Posted

Haha it does look like the bonnet has been opened.

I just hate seeing cars like that lying unused. Even if my asking just reminds the owner that its still there so they come and sort it out. I'll try and ask the Guardroom here tomorrow if they can give me the name. Fingers crossed

Last taxed 1st Aug 2007. Last mot expired 7 March 2007. From DVLA web page. Not on SORN.

would this not be on some computer system at the base, as the reg number will tally with a pass number surely, car might have been on finance, guy couldn't pay left it there, guy could have left army and be dead etc etc, sapphire cosies back 10 yrs ago weren't worth a great deal, especially if the motors fucked or something, car could be a previous write off.

Had something similar with a Suzuki GS650 motorbike at work-it had been in the basement since at least 1999, and was covered in thick dust. I asked around and no one knew where it came from. A e-mail round the whole company did not illicit a reply, Short story is it the V5 I applied for came back with previous keeper name not being known to anyone, and the address was now a supermarket. I stuck £50 quid to the local hospice, and gave it to my mate who wanted a bike to restore, which he did. I'll try and find the before and after photos, as I do have them somewhere.

Good luck with your search for the owner, and I hope the back story is not tragic.

And I'll have the winning 59th ball...!

SRSLY though, a lot of expensive motor just to abandon like that. Engine/turbo issues?

Posted

Hopefully the system will have it. If not then I'm a bit stuck. I imagine it'll hopefully be a fairly easy fix as I'm told they are pretty bullet proof.

In terms of selling, i have absolutely no clue what these go for realistically. But that is potentially a long way off

Pressure wash all the rubbish off and it looks good.

This is a friendly forum but I think the idea above of hiding the reg number is a good one.

Posted

As said already, these are worth stupid money even if the engine is scrap.

The wheels and interior alone are worth a fortune, then the bodykit, bonnet etc

Would easily break into 5 figures
