Alfa 146 1.8 Twin Spark

Had forgotten about these, then this turns up: one owner, AR service history, really good condition; very inexpensive indeed, good characterful fun. Wasted on a motorway commute, but fun round the lanes.

The latest in a long time-line of Alfas for me, starting back in the mid 80s with a Sud Sprint 1.5, then:

  • Alfetta Mk1 2.0 saloon
  • Alfetta GTS
  • Giulietta 2.0 saloon
  • Alfasud 1.5 2-door

All jolly good fun, but ponderous, like my old Alfettas and the 75, in varying degrees, it could be argued, compared to my MR2.

Characterful, though, and life enhancing.

Well brought don't see many 145 / 146 Alfas about now either, great pics too of your old Alfas. Definitely at some point we have to get a Alfa to go with are Fiats. :-D

Nearly brought a 2.0 155 about 5 years ago but it had been bodged up sadly with fillered rear arches. Broken bits of trim etc so I passed on it.

I had a 145 Green Cloverleaf about 6 years ago, I paid buttons for it because it had a burnt valve. I fixed her up and she was a trusted steed for a good while.

I've got 2 busted GTV's and a 147 now. 147's are epic and cheap at the moment having hit the bottom of the curve.

I like the 146 and have bid for one on ebay in the past but never managed to win one. To me the 146 looks nicer than the 145 but for now I will stick to our 156 Sports Wagon V6 and 1983 Giulietta 2.0.

In the past we have owned a Alfetta 1.6, Giulietta 1.8, Alfasud Sprint 1.3 and a 164 24v Auto.

Yes, it's great fun, well built, sound and reliable; had forgotten these 146s existed, such a long time since seeing one or even thinking about them.

Was looking for a Saxo VTS when this turned up; am convinced the Alfa has to be just as much fun to drive in real world South East road conditions, at much less initial purchase expense.

Rust killed off my older Alfas one by one, and I'd forgotten how incredibly cheap some of them are to buy nowadays, especially the 156 and 147; both of these are on the list to try once this one goes 'twang!'.

Always liked these and the 145, tried to buy one a few times but always been outbid/saw it and it was rubbish. They're a rare car now

Back in '08 I almost picked up a 2000 plated one for £250.

Thankfully it sold before I arrived to view it, as I'm sure it would have been an utter delight* to own.

The grey one above was sold on ebay for £400, promptly turned up on this dealers site for £995; now on its third price reduction . . .

Thanks Wolf; they're bargains compared to their rivals when new; good news for us all here.

We ( well, the wife) had one years back- a 1.6 Boxer. The gearbox howled but it never ever cause us any issue. She loved that car, even after the utter decadence that was her Dedra. I've had a 145 Cloverleaf too and loved it, then moved on to GTV's. Looking for a nice 147 at the moment.

I still get that trigger finger when I see one for sale. My old GTV was/is back up for sale and I'm very very tempted. It was a brilliant car.

I know 'all new cars' etc. but how do the new Alfas - Mitoos and such stand up to the perceived* Alfa traditions, you know, great to drive while it is working?

I've no idea but I've put Alfa seats into la panda and they're very comfy, if not a little tight on the love handles.

I have an Alfa itch at the moment, I find myself drawn to fleagay and the hunt for a 156 (in any flavour but MUST have dead-cow chairs) for less than £200 within a 200 mile radius of Bristol.

Lets call it an early christmas present to myself.

no names, no pack drill, but can these be operated with just a normal key, in the absence of a remote pipper?

Had two of those, a 146 Boxer (one of the earliest) last year and wife's car was one of those in 146 2.0 Cloverleaf form for 4 happy years

Had two Alfasuds too and three 33 over the years . Still got a 33 (early one)

Never had a Giulietta or Alfetta, but did have a 6 and a 90 in recent years

Kept a 155 2.0 TS Widebody for 8 years as a daily

Current daily is a 156 Wagon

Yes as long as the key is coded.  Doors have key locks, that have the added bonus of freezing in his weather

My mum had a 1.4 turbo 155bhp mito for three years, just last weekend sold it.

When she first got it I wasn't too impressed but over time it really grew on me and in the press there not exactly praised for being amazing steers. But it popped and backfired on the overrun and had ace brembo brakes. Was six speed and would do a solid 35-40mpg on a run. I really rate them now and was really considering buying it off her.

which got chavved up and used for a couple of track days.  i almost wish i hadn't sold it, but it needed to make way for the BMW you can see in the background 8)
