Renault Laguna, Y reg. But why, Reg?

You can't really diagnose from that. It could be as simple as an overfilled engine filling the cat with oil, or it could be a melted engine. Or anything in between tbh because renault.

True! But smoke out of an exhaust is very likely going to be faffing around in the engine bay, and as the V6 is tightly packed, the level of cba is too high to justify it - especially as non-broken V6s do come up. If it was an electrical fault, I'd be all over it, but mechanical fault not so much for me.

Anyway, I took the laptop out and did you some ADB logcats.

Fresh install of ohnorenault on a different android that's never had torque installed. BT pairs up, click connect in the app, select device then "Failed to connect to the OBD tool".

Took the tablet back into the house, installed Torque, ran another log. Torque connects and reads fine.

PM me an email address and I'll send you the logs. Files added! I can't see any difference between them tbh. I did notice that the adapter doesn't identify its type and the tablet tries multiple protocols to get it to connect but in both logs it eventually does RFCOMM and talks to it. After that, I dunno. Plenty of "D/BluetoothDevicePreference(  942): Is my device connected::false" messages even after it's logging data to Torque. Wierd

Thanks for the logs, I've had a quick sift through and can't see anything obviously different yet.

If you get a chance, could you try installing https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=es.pymasde.blueterm (you may have it already), and then see if it connects ok. If it does, then try going into Preferences and disable "Allow insecure connections" and try again.

That app has been open sourced, so it gives me a chance to look through their implementation of a Bluetooth connection sequence. It appears almost identical to mine, except that they have an option to connect as an insecure connection (by default) - where I always try to connect as a secure session.

Cheers.

As a part time software tester, I almost want to buy a Renault and help you try your program!

Dont think I know anyone with a Renault to try it with my ebay cheap reader. Will ask around!

Ooh, actually amys friend has an x reg Megane floppy top, would it work with that?

OK, grabbed that one from the play store and tried again. I have good news and bad news....

Good news - it connects to the adapter but not to the ECU. It seems torque did naughty things to the saved mode settings on the device so I reset it to auto and it connects and reports as usual.

Bad news - even after doing that, yours still doesn't connect!

PS, blueterm fails to connect if I use the "insecure" option.

This is what I think may be the problem! Going to have to make it try connecting secure first and if that fails, try again as insecure.

Thanks!

Megane 1 aren't supported yet. May never be fully supported as most are pre EOBD, so can have wierd sockets and the way they communicate is far harder to figure out. Also they're getting thin on the ground now, so less potential customers wanting it unfortunately.

If you like troubleshooting problems and fiddling with stuff, I thoroughly recommend buying a Renault!

We were watching a repossessed Laguna 3 DCi Automatic at the auction yesterday. For some reason it didn't attract any bids.

I do well fancy one of the coupes on a purely aesthetic basis. There is someone in a office near me that has one and I regulary follow it home. Its the only one I have ever seen IRL.

That is lovely! When is R9UKE getting one from the free ads for £300 from it's first owner then?

Took the car on its first long(ish) fast(ish) run today - my dad is in hospital so we popped over to Middlesbrough this evening to go and visit. Dad is doing ok and should be discharged tomorrow but the car handles like a camel on stilts with rollerskates on the bottom. I notice from the MoT history that I advised both back shocks for leaking last july.... I also notice from looking up the parts that they are gas shocks so seeing as they aren't leaking now I think the contents are long gone, and I should probably look for some before I end up doing a bub and mounting a wall with it.

I'll see what my local guys have to offer in the morning. Tbh I'm not keen on spending much money on it and even with the discount that's a bit expensive for no-name budget shocks that should be on runout by now.

Sachs, £22 each. Here in the morning.

You have a Renault, look the reader is telling you how to travel.

If you needed no name budget shocks have a look on eBay - I bought some "GKR" or something for my Kangoo van for a pitiful amount of money and they haven't killed me yet

I'm not sure I've ever seen a Laguna 3 that wasn't on a Scottish plate with an Arnie sticker in, or an HNxx plate that so many Renault-registered cars seem to be - hire cars, staff purchase schemes etc.

I noticed something odd while playing with the diagnostic socket today - I was looking at live data and was getting nothing from either lambda sensor. The emissions report also had incomplete tests for lambda and cat. EML not on, no codes stored. Wierd. I assumed it was being renault and ignored it.

Just now I thought about it again - when I tested blueterm for SIC yesterday I did a 0100 query - this gives a byte encoded list of supported PID codes. Looking at this I can see that the car doesn't support Lambda monitioring through the OBD port at all. It also won't give you fuel trim, MAF flow rate, secondary air status or any information about supported PIDs higher up the list than the first 20. This is pretty wierd - usually you can see everything the car has to offer engine wise even on stuff much more basic than the Lag.

I think all the info will be there and available to a renault scan tool, but they have chosen to be as non-compliant with EOBD as they can get away with.

Onwards!

Quarter to five on a friday afternoon is obviously the best time to start dismantling your car.

Brave! You just know the evil Laguna is going to dump something bad, like brake fluid/loose bolts/entire subframes/etc onto your Cortina when you're not looking...

That reminds me, the rear exhaust rubbers are about shot too. If there is a silencer lying on the boot of the tina in the morning, I'll be annoyed.

It's never happened yet though, and I've been using the ramp to double up parking for a long time.

Posted

I put my rover p4 on the ramp and left my mk10 jag underneath.

Came in the next day to see some red jelly type substance by the rear bumper

It was paint, the p4 brake master cylinder leaked brake fluid overnight and the paint was running off the jag rear wing

I thought that modern brake fluid didn't attack paint, the paintwork is shit anyway so no biggee

My parents bought a 6 month old A4 as a ex-dealer car, about 5 years ago. 8 months old, a rust spot started appearing on the roof. After an argument with the dealers (they blamed it on a stone chip), they finally got a Audi UK inspector in. His reckoning was that it was from a car above when it was transported from new - Audi got it cleaned up and resprayed under warranty.

Brake fluid is nasty stuff.

Those rear shocks can be a right bastard to remove iirc. Doesn't the inner sleeve of the bush go inside the trailing arm by about 10mm or so and seizes solid in there ?

I would give up on it and buy a £50 406 TD or something.

And end one of the best threads of the year so far? Come on, man!
