That's the soon to be tax free haunted one I replaced a solid non haunted already tax free one with six years ago.

And that's the garage through which's back wall I should have pushed it into the river right there and then.

Typical Austrian Aristocracy - always with the oneupmanship... my rust is worse than your rust... Fine I'll keep the fucking thing and continue to work on it.

I am taking a welding class on the 10th - I have great expectations delusions about my soon to be acquired welding SKILZ

If my typically Austrian aristocratic oneupmanship helped to encourage you to do your car up,

my work here is finished.

Good luck.

TEH Junkman saves the day!  Yay!  I am emailing you some Champagne and Foie Gras as a token of my gratitude!

I bought the car with a view to learning how to weld and was initially disappointed to find that there was practically no rust in it.  Then I watched with horror the work detailed by many owners of UK cars and I thanked my lucky stars that my car was so sound.

The only real rust to speak of has been in the well know water traps in the wings, and even these by UK standards have been insignificant.  I won't be removing the rear wings for a while to come, but I have been curious about the extend of the damage hidden in that area of the rear wing.  At first it didn't seem too bad until I got the body hammer out and discovered it had a 70s style bondo and paper repair.  I have one complete spare right wing, but it has damage on the lip of the wheel arch, and I have a second right wing that I cut into sections.  I have one complete spare left wing but It has a massive dent in the lower rear so it will be used to donate any sheet metal needed for repairs.

From what I can tell, my car has had a few dings and dents throughout it's forty plus years, and at least one respray, but other than that it's in pretty good shape considering.

Sold for the princely sum of $5,925.50 when new in 1970.

I will - thank you!

I would be out working on it today as planned but OMGRAINKAOS has stopped play.

LOLs only just come across this thread. A mini-break in Julian..?.......that's quite an achievement in itself, I can only take that place for as long as it takes to pick up an apple pie. You should have a run up there in the summer, as well as the weekend easyriders the place also has Tarantulas, great big ones.....lots of em.

I wouldn't go with a 100 miles of the place in summer, which is pretty tough as we only live 120 miles away.  When we go we go mid week or out of season... I mean, queuing for an apple pie in tourist season takes about a week doesn't it?

Headed up there again in mid-February.  With any luck it will have snowed.

Might I enquire your most Majestic Baron Herr Von TEH Junkman, but is the haunted Rover Tobacco Leaf in colour?  If so, may I compliment you on your most excellent taste?

Posted

No, it's Mexico Brown, thus has been awarded* a slight deduction of shite points and manifests my bad taste in car colours.

In my defence, it's 50 shades of brown, though, not counting five different shades of rust.

The mustard yellowish 'paint' is the cataphoric coating the bodies were dipped in before they got painted.

Yours should be the same where it wasn't painted body colour?

Now that you say it, I can see that it's Mexico - the lighting in some of those photos makes it almost look Tobacco though.

My first attempt at painting the front wing.  I will be doing the whole car myself and have settled on the original Tobacco Leaf instead of a colour change to Zircon Blue, which was my first choice.

the paint finish on that front wing is shocking- i sugest you take it off and replace it and send that one to junkman to be disposed of

Holy shit.

May I send you my car?

Yes, email the car to me and I'll start on it right away.

You're right - but that's the practice one - he might want to wait for the one that I have been doing all the body work on before I shoot some colour...

On a recent return trip to Julian I spotted this beauty....

post-19583-0-19844200-1517731150_thumb.jpg

We love this town, the only problem is that being "big city" folk we find it hard to get our heads round the fact that the place is dead come 6:30 p.m. - driving down main street feels like the middle of the night.

More importantly though, I found this...

https://www.1ownercarguy.com/1986_Merkur_XR4Ti_El%20Cajon_CA_15323099.veh

I want it so badly that I have trouble breathing... if ever you wondered what love is, this is it...

I have space on the drive, I even have enough money to buy it... the problem is the woman that lives in my house says I can't have no more cars... can this be right?  Surely that can't be fair?

I am afeard that she might kill me dead if I ignore her.  Help?

Do what I did with my xr4i and hide it somewhere else .

I want it, I need it, I can't live without it...

I had a mate that would have hidden it on his drive for me - you know, he says it's mine to his missus and I tell my missus it's his kind of thing but, the selfish fucker moved out of town.

It is dirt cheap for what it is, but death scares me and I've not yet come up with a suitable story to avoid being killed.

Tell her an Autoshiter in England has bought it and contracted you to get it running and tested, before shipping?

Posted

Wow, that is cheap,,,,,,,,,,wonder what the dealer paid for it.?

Do find somewhere to store it though, I can tell you exactly what happens when er indoors finds out that you own all the chod in the driveway..............

Or you could tell her its mine..........but that's a long shot and will fail shortly after...........I know you know.

Does Trumpland not have such things as lock-ups, or are the rental rates too high? That Merkur looks like a megabarg.

Posted

I think the rates must be too high.  I watch Storage Hunters and they're forever finding cars in defaulted units.

Posted

That Sierra, I mean Merkur is lovely.

From the sounds of it not buying it is proving dangerous to your health. Not buying it would be like being denied treatment and that's just not cool!

Get it bought. Tell your other half it's mine if you want pending shipping...

Or can't you park it on the street?

That looks a nice thing 85/86 judging between the dash and wheel combo, I love how these got the early mk2 fuel flap, the shells are also stiffer than the European xr4i cars due to extra strengthening they got as standard

Have you bought it yet? If you have to sell it it I'll give you the full purchase price as long as you can deliver.

Yeah, everything seen on TV is true.
