Autoshambles - NEC?

Recommended Posts

Right then folks. Thought I'd start a new thread for this one just because I'd like to properly gauge interest. Do we wish to have an Autoshite stand at the NEC albeit with suitably child-friendly title? I'm happy to get the ball rolling, though we need a team (already had several volunteers) to help run it and man the stand.

No guarantee that we'll get a stand, but I have pulled off the trick before with the BX Club. I'd probably try and organise a donation system to cover public liability insurance and to go toward feeding the team. Unless we score a deal with Greggs or Ginsters for some *quality grub.

No point thinking about which cars yet, as you don't usually hear about whether you've got a stand until April sort of time. I absolutely agree with one suggestion that we should have a car being tinkered with. At least one.

Thoughts?

Count me in. Also, you didn't give me a chance to say "Hi" before legging it. I was the devastatingly handsome chap who looked like he hadn't slept in a week, and I wanted to say Hi but didn't want to interrupt, then JB showed up I think and it was all a bit confusing.

Also, if you want to have a car being tinkered with, maybe can do something about use of a lift ;) And I'd definitely bring one of the fleet.

Of course, to make it a proper Autoshite stand, there should be a (legitimately run somehow) charity raffle sort of a thing for a car no-one wants, and they're not allowed to take it home from the show, they have to collect it from Scotland.

Sounds good, don't think I'd like to get involved but as long as it doesn't lead to clubesq squabbles it can only be a good thing.

I know. I felt beyond foolish when I finally put two and two together. My poor brain has had a tough few days Mr Rock Star. And that chocolate doughnut wasn't helping matters. Difficult.

Lift? Pah! We'll just as the Carr brothers to sort some pallets out...

I'll think about a charity raffle. Could be done. Perhaps we just buy the stand cars on ebay the night before and ROFFLE all of them.

"Win this car: Please submit your BEST OFFER in Gumtree style. The most accurate wins. Bribes are accepted, but only if you pay them up weekly and are still waiting for payday".

I'll bring the hearse, actually. We could offer "mystery meat" sandwiches from it.

"Clarkson? Oh, that's a very tender subject. Another slice, anyone?"

Ah, you see, I had to reject the donuts. They're a lovely treat to be offered, but I can't stand the texture of cold donut dough - I'd rather one of those little vans that you get at car boot sales offering tiny morsels of fat absorbed into dough then covered in sugar. Perfect for cold "staring at tables of secondhand baby clothes wondering who the hell wastes time bringing that stuff" and hoping for a forgotten C64 or Atari days.

I think you should just asterisk out the non child friendly part of our name, would be good to broadcast our cause.

I guess that's the thing. Attending as a 'club' really is promotion of the brand. Is that something we're happy to do? The name is tricky. It can be a hindrance at times like this.

I have no suitable Autos Hite to display but count me in for some financial and moral support Ian.

I think the asterisk is the way to go otherwise it potentially looks like something just cobbled together for a stand. At least the established forum, its number of members and high activity can be used to strengthen the argument. I'd love to be part of things, you can have the C5 as extra bonus shite.

I'd go along with that.  Adrian Flux asked me where I'd got their details from, I did warn him the site name was a bit risque but he insisted.  You could hear the slightly shocked silence when I said the name.

I'd be up for this too.  Would love to be on a stand, especially with a 405!

Sounds like a plan, not wanting to sound negative though but isn't it quite expensive to have a stand? I seem to recall both the Alpine Renault clubs were saying it was out this year due to the high costs? I heard a couple of grand mentioned?

Needs an ebay tat wall, where submissions can be made by pinning-up printouts from a budget PC running Windows 98.

Good luck with this, Ian..

Bit like herding cats...

I'm probably too far away to realistically offer help, but if you want something rare- sorted or not, I can probably get something.

There's no charge to have a stand. The costs are transporting vehicles, feeding the crew (unless they pay their own way) and paying for any fancy stuff you have on the stand. I can imagine that the fancy stands do end up being quite expensive. The BX Club display didn't cost very much at all. We took small donations from members and that covered our costs.

I'm going to have an unofficial chat with the organiser about the name issue and see what they think. Will give a good indication of how likely it'd be that we'd get a stand too, before bothering with the palaver of applying. Handily, I met the lady who looks after the clubs at the weekend.
