For Sale - 2001 Octavia Estate Turbo 4x4

Mate's just replaced this with a Passat so up for sale. He's led with "spares or repairs" but it doesn't sound junk, it's got the same symptoms as when a coil pack went last year (£20) and there's some sort of leak after the MAF so it runs lumpy when cold, sounds like it's not metering properly.

51 plate Octavia 4x4. Good spec. 1.8T engine with 170k on. MOT out in the next few weeks. He's sending photos soon but I said I'd ask here in case anyone's fearing OMGSNO. It's blue. There are a few rust blebs, nothing perforated. He's been banging the miles on and before the coil pack it was lapping it up. It has a stainless exhaust apparently too. And all four tyres are less than a year old.

He murmured something about needing it gone, and offers around £450. He lives in the Major Oak, NG21 or summat. Edwinstowe.

i didn't know you could get these in a 4x4 flavour?

its not my cup of tea, i find the seats way way to hard but it could be a good run about for someone.

Yeah, I think they're quite subtle as they're not jacked up or adorned with loads of plastic trim like an Allroad etc.

The motors on these are 150hp as standard but share a lot of bits with the 225hp VAG 1.8T motors.

Posted

Also these engines seem to be fairly simple to make run in other stuff (like a Zetec). There's a few Mk2 Golfs, Lupos etc using the 20VT engine.

For sale: Engine. Free car with every purchase.

Same as mine.

The lumpy running may just be a dirty throttle body needing a clean.

The motors as mentioned are 150hp stock, but it's just the electronic map. A £250 remap makes 225hp and 260 ftlb. More than enough to raise eyebrows. They're massively over-engineered.

Good buy!

Hopefully it will be a nice easy fix, BUT since he's already replaced it and resigned himself to getting a few hundred quid (feel free to make offers) then it might work out well for the new owner..... or it might turn into something more sinister.

I'm going over to see him on Wednesday so if he's not been forthcoming with pictures by then I'll grab some, and take it out for a spin to see if I can tell you any more about the faults. It does drive, but you'd want to keep off motorways if it drops to running on 3. Or just turn up with a coil pack and crossed fingers.

Bet these have a hefty towing a-framing capacity being a 4x4. The Passat TDi 4x4's can tow about 1,000,000 tons

Right, I went over to see my mate today but because the M1 was a massive bag of arse I was about a million hours late getting there and it was dark.

I swapped his flashy Sony stereo out for the factory one that takes something called a cass-et. However, he did them remember that it has a 6 disc changer in the boot which is a bonus.

It's actually not a bad looking car, the interior would benefit from a vac but it's not ripped or saggy anywhere, it doesn't look like it'll give you herpes, and it's intact. Not even any bulbs out on the dash or missing trim or owt.

It's got the changer in the boot, it's got climate control, 4x electric windows, roof rails blah blah.

If you want to take Boll's idea of towing a supertanker with it, it comes with towbar.

The wheels are getting swapped for later OEM Skoda alloys because these aren't kerbed, and the ones on his new Octavia (the Passat turned out to be a dog so he took it back) are and as he says, for a £400 car you expect kerbed alloys. Tyres are in similar condition though, eg plenty of life. There's a quarter tank of fuel, his new motor is diesel so that's going nowhere.

I had a wander around and there's a few bits of flaky paint where the rust has bubbled and then someone's been popping the zits. Both front arches, tailgate lower window, above one rear light, rear inch of sill. Nothing perforated though, the tailgate is possibly the worst bit. Twenty quid on kurust, primer and an aerosol would see it presentable. Oh, and the passenger wing mirror has been smacked on something.

It's been sat for two weeks but it fired right up and settled into a lumpy idle. Sometimes it would idle fine, and then 20sec later it would remember to go lumpy. It does sound a bit hissy like it's got an air leak on the intake, but no EML. Would have looked further but it was dark, he was just about to go out, and I wanted to go to KFC so I might try to repeat the "go and look at the car" exercise in a few days.

Right, my mate's taken the "can you get some photos, get some of the crusty bits" a bit literally and he's ONLY taken photos of the crusty bits. So in this gap here, imagine a metallic blue 51 reg Octavia, in the daylight.....

There you go. The rest of it looks like this

As as reminder, it's got get-you-home MOT if you buy it REALLY quickly (it runs out on the 5th, which is almost perfect for a Saturday collection), it's got 160-odd thousand on the clock, and it has a slight running issue that won't stop you getting home but you'd want to fix it before relying on it - with a good chance it just needs a coil pack.

It's near Mansfield, I can maybe help with logistics (I'm more Leicester, but I'll help out with picking up from stations, airports or hovercraft terminals if it helps my mate shift it)

Is not the rustiest car I have seen. I have seen many. I have owned most of them.

Where are you? Well, your mate's car anyway. Just out of interest.

As a reminder, I'm pulling an empty trailer from Arnold in Nottingham to Ripon this Sunday morning, if that helps anyone and they'll bung me a few quid.

Edwinstowe, north of Mansfield, where Robin Hood lives.

I don't believe any of the rust is penetrative but it is both ugly, and likely to create holes soon. Basically he's not a car person so he's just left it to get worse, it gets taken down dirt tracks and never washed etc. Feel free to delve through the MOT history using DA51YBW and I think it had an advisory for sill rust last year so let's assume it'll need a slight tickle.

Arnold is not far at all on the grand scheme of things, a divert off that northern route to Angela Ripon would add half an hour or so.

That looks rough! Would probably break for more though.

Always really fancied one of these but 2 cars in the fleet are 4wd and the other has snow tyres so SNO_PARANOIA is rather satisfied for this year's winter mildness

Posted

I think only taking photos of the bad bits has undersold it.... It's actually quite OK in the main, yeah a new bootlid would make it much better but it's not a rotten heap.

A lot to like on this, perfect for Crail tuning, but have no space.

Last thing I need is another short MOT Octavia that needs work:)

if it had 4 months MOT on it I'd have been on it like a tramp on chips.

very tweakable

I will pass on any offers made....

EDIT: Just remembered this is Autoshite, I'll pass on offers that don't contain any confectionery, other cars, amounts of money less than a pound, vacuum cleaners or a picture of Princess Anne in a Scimitar.
