EEE OOP! (other stereotypes are available)

Got my eye on Volvo estates, and this one appears to be nigh on my perfect spec. The mileage is a wee bit high, but that's the only drawback - and a minor one at that. It's £1499, from

 Here's teh link off t'ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-Previous-Owner-FSH-2004-Volvo-V70-2-4-SE-CHEAP-7-seat-estate-/321910407824?hash=item4af35b0290:g:02UAAOSwT5tWH4q8

Sent him this message:

Hi,
I've got a 52 plate Seat Leon Cupra with 149k on it, a few battle scars, would you be interested in part-ex? I'm not looking for daft money - 599? Also would there be any warranty on the Volvo?
Sorry if this appears cheeky - but if you don't ask, you don't get!
Cheers - please reply via ebay, i drive for work, and don't have hands free!
bob

And got this reply

Bob, yes you're a bit optimistic over the price of your SEAT - I'm sure being that sort of car it'll be half-knackered, no history etc.
As for warranty I offer a lamp post warranty. Once you pass the first lamp post and the warranty expires - take a look over the weekend along Whessoe Road and see what sort of car them lads offer you for £1600.

Thanks
Mark

I have no idea where Whessoe Road is....

He's knocked £100 off since I sent the message.

There's no mention of warranty, but I'm guessing Sale of Goods Act will apply?

So, does anyone know this bloke / dealer? Any good?

Posted

He does state the warranty in that reply, directly and to the lamp post :-D

Thought by law they'd to give you 3 months warranty?

Posted

I'm not an expert but thought that it merely has to be fit for purpose and of suitable quality for what it is. A three month warranty on an 11 year old car with 130k miles at £1400 would be a bit optimistic I'd have thought.

Looks a nice car though.  Can't decide whether I like the dealers honesty or whether he sounds like a tosspot from his reply though.

As for your SEAT, CAP sees them at a lot less than that sadly. Anything oldish with a reasonable size engine is valued at buttons at the moment (ask me how I know etc)

Given his location, I wouldn't trust him to honour a warranty. That bit of middlesbrough is full of reputable* car dealers.

Here, have a look.

Incidentally, Whessoe street in darlington is another hive of arthurs, so he's probably having a joke with you.

Stick it to the man, work out a route away from his dealership that passes no lamposts until you are out of sight, then claim you've never driven past another one.

BOOM - instant, unlimited miles warranty right there.

isn't whessoe road where "Big Mike" of "Cars go cheap at Big Mike's" fame used to be based?

its on the outskirts of Darlington and is it seems where a large scrap yard is based.

dunno the dealer, nut he sounds well dodgy to me...

I've no idea - I'm not expecting parts, labour, moon-on-a-stick warranty, just enough to get me home and some pootling.

That Spanish Bastard had no warranty, and was "sold as seen" and turned into a money pit, to the extent that SWMBO is adamant that "all ebay cars are shit" despite my Volvo being no problem at all.

Until I broke it.

Edit WBAC.com will offer between £565 and £625 apparently....but i thought it was worth asking.

Unfortunately I can't tell if he's having a chuckle or not - maybe it's just his "humour" v Mine....

I thought Big Mikes used to be on the Portrack industrial estate in stockton. Mind you, I'd move a lot if I sold cars like he did.

I bought a BMW 318 from here for J2500, I had been having trouble with my old car and explained to him that my wife was 32 weeks pregnant and we needed a reliable car. It was advertised by him as 'Barely run in for one of Germany's finest'

What he didn't tell me was the head gasket had gone on it an been bodged up with 'Steel Seal' in the radiator, I had the car for 8 days, 4 of which it was sat on the drive and didn't move, when I found out the problem I called him to get the answer 'Not my problem mate' I then wrote to him on several occasions, he wouldn't answer the phone to me anymore so I called on another number only to get the answer 'You're not getting you're money back, you're going to have to take me to court'.

My wife is now 34 weeks pregnant, I don't have a car to get her to hospital in (which is 30 miles away) and I have no money to buy another car!

I am now going to have to go through small claims court to attempt to get some of my savings back and finally provide my family with some safe reliable transport.

*If I could give minus figures as a rating I would.

edit -  this one is funny.

.....2) Do you offer warranties? No, but with the money you've saved buying from B.H.M. you can easily afford an aftermarket warranty. Of course, you are welcome to go and pay the retail prices at your local car dealers' forecourt if you want convenience.

....Any reference to a drive by Byerley House Motors (BHM) in no way suggests the vehicle is roadworthy or suggests any form of warranty. Any reference to servicing/tyres/brakes etc. in no way suggests any form of guarantee.

....If any reference to condition is made by BHM it is purely from a 1 minute ‘walkaround’

Big Mikes Bargain Bangers was at Portrack for donkeys, he sold out to Dalmatian cars and then went to work at Popular over at Durham Road, Stockton. They're owned by Comerfords at Darlo so it's likely he had a yard there. He's a shady fucker.

I don't know this particular garage where the Volvo is at, but there did used to be a mechanic on that road who used to do a bit of buying and selling, so it might be him. I will do some digging!

The directions on his ebay page point to Wellington Garage which backs onto Italy Street, so you could be right. It also says "By appointment only".

I think his attitude is realistic for the price range of car he is offering.

He has probably dealt with lots of mouthbreathers, so he has set his stall out from the beginning.

Go and look at the car and report back for autoshite amusement.

Having the voice recorder on your mobile turned "on" will help.

The product has to be of "merchantable " quality.

I think if you go he will offer you £30 - on the basis of your car weighing a tonne.

As I understand it, "sold as seen" no longer holds water so you can take them to court to get your cash back UNLESS the car is sold as "salvage", in which case you're taking your chances.  New consumer laws means you have six months in which to get repairs made on the car by the dealer.

None of that matters anyway.  You'd get a better deal just burning fivers than buying from someone with that sort of approach to business.  Volvo V70s aren't exactly difficult to get hold of, keep looking and you'll find a better one.

Anyone else check the MoT history? The photo on ebay shows lower miles than the MoT back in july.. It's also failed for ABS faults 2 years in a row, and I wonder if the two NEW tyres are the ones that failed the test, or the ones that got advised for low tread....

The lack of professionalism in their reply is more off-putting to me than the warranty issue.

Italy St is in the rough part of town, over the border as a lot of car dealers are the world over. Like any used car sale look and think hard, commit slowly. I don't think this anything to do with Mike Comerford and family, they have Comcars on Durham lane Stockton, the one at Darlington and a small outfit at Marske. Even if it were, I bought 2 or 3 cars down the years and was happy with with them, they didn't try to polish a turd. It'll just be something fresh from the auction with a mark up on the price, accept it as such and move carefully.

HMMM.....

@SOC - I hadn't thought of that.....but it doesn't sound good.

@Vulgz - That's the thing, there are loads of V70's about, but rare to find one thats not silver, is manual, diseasle, 7 seater and not done inter-galactic miles.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one that thinks he appears to be an utter nobber.

It'll stay on the watchlist for now. he might reduce it to the point of MAX BARGAINOUS, where it'd be less of a risk.

I think as long as you confirm that the Service History really is 'lovely' then you'll probably be alright Bob.

As October 2015 CRAp adds even more to consumer rights, even the mentaloids must realise, "sold as seen" and all the other Arthur Daily nonsense is rubbish?

Whessoe Road has always been a hive of wrongness. I sold them an A reg Yugo 311 back in 1993 with a fucked gearbox for £150. They didn't even drive it, just started the engine, revved it up and counted out the money. Big Mike's became Comerford cars but it's as iffy as ever. Further up the road is another shower on the left - same deal. They will be from the auctions or just bought in for $$$cash$$$$, a 300quid margin added and down the road.

The reply he's given is straight to the point. He's probably an alright bloke but never forget that car dealers are just the modern equivalent of horse traders, and they are all plagued by wankers - the general public in all their shell suit wearing mouth breathing glory. Nothing has changed. It's an old car and if it drives okay on the test drive, that's as good as you can hope for.

Yes, they had one there as well. Mate bought a P reg Capri 2000 Ghia there in 1992 for £350, tidy as well.

We get upset when we have to sell a car on eBay and get idiots. Can't imagine trying to do that for a living.

Agree probably sound bloke, but I still wouldn't as its my money if it is a wrong un
