Would any midlanders be willing to offer use of tools and a lending hand please? I really would like the cambelt done on the vectra along with water pump etc but can't really afford a garage to do it and all my tools are in a friends garage buried till I get my own place so I'm in a bit of a quandary! I don't want to fuck anything up either! I can afford to pay a bit towards time etc. I really don't want to knacker up this one,I've really had enough of bloody cars! Thanks in advance.

Ps pic added for anyone who may give a shit anymore!

I can send a PDF, changes are recommended at 40k or 4 years up to 2002½ MY, 60k or 6 years 2002½ MY on.

Mines a 52 plate one. Not changed a cambelt in over 8 years if I'm honest so a bit nervous!

I dont mean to be rude, but why are you doing the cambelt?

At that age and value, it is hardly worth the effort (at least not until the car has proved reliable for a month or two)

In my opinion its not worth throwing the money at, at least until it proves its worth

Is it just me, cos to me a 52 plate motor is a modern car (our newest is 52 plate), so to me its vital to keep things like cambelt (especially) up to scratch.

Take your point though about giving it a few weeks first to see if the motor's a good un, that does make sense unless there's bits of cambelt appearing round the cover.

A fair compromise!

surely worth doin a cambelt, if not to get inconveniently and embarrassingly  stuck somewhere on it snapping - eg; post  in laws church wedding service, on the x-mas eve pressies rush,  exiting the red light district, buying two tubs of icecream, frozen chips n burgers at the supermarket etc etc...

The reason I'd like to do the cambelt is I've had enough of hgf, fault codes, smoke steam and death so I'd jut like to try and get a car right and treat it right and make it reliable!

First thing I have done when getting a new car. Mind you the last time I bought a car with a belt was 2009.

I would love to help but:

1. Am in London.

2. I am mechanically shit.

3. I have no idea what I would be doing.

If any of the above points were different then I would be happy to help. Hopefully AS will rise to the occasion for you :)

PS, that looks like a really nice, tidy car. I can understand why you want to get the cambelt sorted.

It's got abs light on and a mismatched alloy wheel, some scuffs here and there too but overall for 156 thou on clock everything works!

Can bring some tools and a pair of hands with the following proviso's

We pick a day that isn't pouring with rain

You have the kit and/or knowledge to deal with keeping the cams set correctly

Not done a belt change before, but willing to learn as I should do the same on the Puma.

I can bring jacks, axle stands, ramps for access and have a decent mix of tools + big socket set and torque wrench for getting stuff on, off.

I've got the knowledge, I've done them before but not a big fan of doing them but hey ho it's gotta be done. Like I said though all my bloody tools, jacks etc are buried at the minute

They didn't make a 1.6 in C format, I think it's a 1.8 petrol.

Had a couple in the past and proved to be very capable motors. Not had much issues if I'm honestly

Mines the z18xe lump Sam,not sure if the tool is the same?

It's not, just checked the ebay ad I bought it off, 1.4 and 1.6 only. Fuck having a 1.4 in a meriva, the 1.6 is slow enough!

Can you bring it to Nuneaton ? If you supply parts I'll change the belt kit and pump for £45 , ex-Vauxhall tech with all the kit and a small garage I'm trying to get going...

Posted

^ Daz, if you can get it to Nuneaton, I'll provide the £45...

Posted

Also, ignore the intervals and go with 40k max on all pre-2005 16v engines , the belt is dead thin and the pulleys are plastic. I spent most of 1999-2004 grinding in new valves to cylinder heads...

Dave that would be a fantastic offer. Thank you. I think I get paid this week so can sort it?

That's such a kind offer. Thank you

I'll chuck a tenner in towards fuel costs if it would help.
