purplebargeken Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Hopefully Billy and Craig the Princess 'Master Collectionist' can carry this forward for now. Forgive me Lord for I have sinned. I haz purchased a Mondeo. No idea why really other than to say that one was on my list of cars I have never owned. It's all Billy's fault anyway. It usually is of late. Bastard DeeJay 1
vulgalour Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Mondeos are surprisingly okay, some are even good and there are those that would argue there are brilliant examples out there. Mundano. purplebargeken 1
Bobthebeard Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I know someone that has one.... purplebargeken 1
Slartibartfast Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I enjoyed my brief time with a Mondeo. After I sank 900 of our finest British pounds getting the fuel pump fixed.
purplebargeken Posted October 19, 2015 Author Posted October 19, 2015 At this point in time the worst issue is a grumbling wheel bearing. It may well not be with me for long as my main aim is for an Alfa at some point. We'll see
KruJoe Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I hope it's a super-fit 21 year old model with black top bumpers. Hnng.
tooSavvy Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 ... any point, m8, it'll just crumble - guaranteed. TS
sierraman Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 There a good motor. I've had a few. Not going to get into a 'vectra vs mondeo' argument but they handle well and can take some cosh. Just make sure it doesn't smoke, then keep the oil clean so it doesn't start smoking. Rear bearing is easy, pattern bearings are £50 on eBay, Ford ones are nearly £400.. Easy hours work replacing one with spline bolts hold it in.
purplebargeken Posted October 19, 2015 Author Posted October 19, 2015 400 quid. I could buy a Mondeo for that. Ah, ummm.
KruJoe Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 I hope it's a super-fit 21 year old model with black top bumpers. Hnng. It's all Billy's fault... Bastard Oh. It's this one isn't it?
purplebargeken Posted October 19, 2015 Author Posted October 19, 2015 Yes. Yes it is that one. Super-fit 21 year old model with black top bumpers. Sounds mildly disturbing but potentially fun. Ah, ummm. You're talking about a car aren't you KruJoe 1
Junkman Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Is it only me, or is there really no petrol station photo? EssDeeWon 1
Noel Tidybeard Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Is it only me, or is there really no petrol station photo?no foto whatsoever
Junkman Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 A collection thread about a Mondeo and no photos. This forum etc etc...
purplebargeken Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 Craig will provide. Once he's woken up, gone to work and back at home again. Patience you bunch of hairy buggers, patience.
Craig the Princess Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Please can we go and collect a Ford Mondeo? How could I turn down that face? So off we go to the station Underway Where is the train? Only 4 minutes late. Such comfort, I'm sure this is what they mean by give up a priority seat for someone who needs it. Still arrival in Brum was on-time, off for a walk The new New Street is very impressive, still some building work going on but much improved just 3 months after I stopped coming here 3 times a week! Can't explain this, all locked up. Jack didn't spend a penny against the gate. Platforms are still grim however. This delayed Liverpool train was heading the right way and I guessed it was quieter than the folllowing Virgin Voyager, the 350 was quite pleasent at least the equal of the 170. Jack made a lady friend on the platform and another on the train. That was us to Crewe, then get off 20 minutes to the Chester train. Time enough to wee against a platform sign. Jack didn't go...150 quite grim but Jack made friends with a young couple coming home from somewhere after two years away, Even Jack didn't approve of the 150 Still arrival in Chester was on time, I was met by this familiar shite And the smell of chips. This may be why Jack jumped straight in and made himeself at home. Been a long while since I had been in a 306, since I got rid of a hatefully slow 1.4 LX.Nice to meet Cavcraft for the first time. Off we headed for a vision in JRG You beauty. Quite nice inside too Jack agreed and settled right in while we sorted paperwork. Thanks to Billy for soring it all out and getting it ready to set straight off in. Map to escape to victory Petrol provided by Cavcraft so no pump shot but I needed a Subway. Vrooom! Traffic to the M6 was light and even the M6 round Birmingham wasn't too bad despite the long 50 mph section. A14 was closed however due to an overturned lorry, the roadsigns said use A45 East so went M1 south. Sat Nav then decided it knew better, sadly not. At one point it told me to go right, I went straight on and that reduced the ETA by 20 minutes. Sodding thing. Still made was back to the A14 3 junctions past the closure, Snarlled back. The lorry hidden from view then decided to try and take the front of the Mondeo off, loud blast of the horn stopped that. I then went right doen some back lanes to the next juction which was clear. Home, 4 and a half hours later. Poxy lorries. Will be delivered to Ken later this week. The Reverend Bluejeans, xtriple, EssDeeWon and 11 others 14
Junkman Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 That's a lot less horrible than I envisioned, so maximum shite points cannot be awarded. It's actually quite nice. Magnificent Rustbucket 1
Bren Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I liked the one I had very much. Sadly according to the MOT website it was never offered for MOT after I sold it, so I presume it went to tata steel.
sierraman Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Easy enough to work on as well. Though the thermostat is a real PITA. Working blind at arms length through the headlamp aperture to undo 3 10mm bolts.
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 It's all about value. Cavcraft 1
purplebargeken Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 Jack the Dog looks ace He seems very well behaved. Good dog! :) The Mondy does look good indeed. Apart from the bearing drone how did it drive? I've never had one so I can't compare it. All bits seem cheap enough Thanks to Craig and Billy for getting me Forded. I look forward to seeing my broom again. I missed you Broom. I am trying to get hold of a CD player for the car and should know in a couple of days Have a good drive over to Essex Craig Thanks again. Ken Cavcraft 1
sierraman Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Can I bore you with my Mondeo expertise? Please.
purplebargeken Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 Oh, go on then, if you must. Hope it is all totally positive
sierraman Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Yes, Engines should prove reliable, though you've got to make sure the oils changed regularly, with the right 5w30 or else the oil control rings gum up, then you've got smoke. This is more prevalent on the 1.8. There was a lot of hysteria about the piss flaps getting ingested into the engine but most will have had the mod now, you can tell whether this has been done though it only affected cars up to the '03 facelift. If it doesn't get up to temp quick or the gauge goes down as soon as you whack the heater on, the thermostats jammed open. Unlike the zetec, this isn't available separate to the housing, which has electronic control. Needless to say from Ford its nigh on a hundred quid, but the circoli one from ECP is ok so long as you use the OE seal. They don't really rust except for the bottoms of the doors, which despite looking shit, is rarely bad enough to warrant putting new doors on. As you would expect the suspension can bag out at old age, though it's much tougher than the mk2 Mondeo. The link rods aren't interchangeable like previous given that they are either plastic or alloy. Brake pipes can go usually over the tank. The callipers will eventually seize, though winding in and out at the service might avoid this. You'll need the tool for this as they are handed. Don't bother fancying about doing it with pliers unless you are Charles Atlas or you want to rip the seals. Alan_Green 1
KruJoe Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Nice one Craig. A bonus 'Like' for the grubby Tomcat, although Jack's photography skills at 42mph are impressive. Craig the Princess 1
purplebargeken Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 Cheers for the info. handy stuff, especially about the brakes
