Munich car hire

We're having a weekend break in Germany in a couple of weeks, (unfortunately) flying into Munich and hiring a car rather than driving all the way. Although I have to admit it makes sense in terms of time.

However, the choices of hire car at the airport leave a lot to be desired! Predictably, there's nothing of interest and even paying extra for a 'premium' car just means a bigger boring car or one with a more highly regarded badge. I'd be happier with a Mk1 Twingo! There are some people renting out classics, but it's getting on for 10 times the price just for something like a Frogeye Sprite.

Anyone know of a middle ground? Are there ANY car hire places who rent out something a few years old, allowing people like myself the chance to afford something that could be regarded as at least slightly interesting?

No help on the car hire, but Munich airport is miles away from the city, so I'd advise against a cab in to the city  and get the train thingy as a cab will cost around 80 eurogroats.

Last year we hired motorcycles from a guy in Munich who also had a disreputable looking Mercedes 190 (the 1960s version) to rent out. I'll trawl through my emails and find his details..

They'll even do you a Cinquecento or series 1 Twingo if you like as well as the old Merc. You can get the train into town and then the underground easily to their base.

Munich was wonderful incidentally. Are you going to the Eagles Nest too?

What's the genuine reason for selling?

If it hasn't sold within the next two weeks, could the feline Mat not hire it?

Nobody needs 3 Tagora...  has been mostly sitting in the Garage for the last two years, so better to pass it on to somebody who will drive and enjoy it.

Sorry, cant rent it out, Its on classic insurance, only registered drivers are allowed to use it.

Looking at that Drivy site I'm thinking about booking a weekend in Munich .

W124 200e for €20 per day or 3.6 V6 Passat CC with 300 bhp for €49 to really make the Autobahns worthwhile !

Drivy looking like the best option so far, cheers. Just to complicate things, the trip is for her birthday so the car has to meet with approval...which rules out 99% of the cars I'd deem interesting :-(

Tedious Munich car hire anecdote...

November 1998.  Truck-driver BIL's heart has FTP, fortunately at company base in Nuremberg not at wheel of 44-tonner.  In hospital, stent inserted.  Domestic Management & self deputised to fly out to check patient.  Hire small car in advance; on arrival, "ve haf a Galaxy for you".

Aha.

BFO MPV, LHD.  Manage to thread down spiral ramp from Sixt base.  Munich-Nuremberg, A9.  Visit BIL, surprisingly chipper, good news.  Leave later than expected.

Friday night, raining; need to make flight, or else.  A9 southbound, binary choice of lane 1 (trucks, 90-100kph) or lane 2 (German attack craft, 180kph+)

CONCLUSION: Ford Galaxy diesel surprisingly rapid; Domestic Management unaware of true velocity...

You can hire a red Mk3 Astra in Germany?  I'm totally gobsmacked.

My wife HATES my immaculate Mk3 Astra.  Imagine her face if we went to Germany....and.....and......oooooh.

Apologies for OT, but isn't a Galaxy diesel of that vintage likely to be sporting the infamous veg munching VAG tdi motor?

If I were heading down to Munich again, but with a car, I'd take a load of time off and motorrail it.

then better hurry, "Die Bahn" decided to stop all autorail services by 2017, already only a few connections left.

Stupid decision, this was a great service and i used it quite frequently.  Like so many things these days, short sighted bean counters managed to kill it, reasoning that investing in new railcars doesn't pay off. Of course the investment doesn't pay off for your next quarter numbers you idiots, did anybody tell you that the old ones lasted 50 years?

My 504 on the Munich Hamburg train three years ago.

One tip for an upgrade is to hand back the keys of the first car, and say "No sorry, that won't do. I'm not driving a French Car Ever"

*Worked well when offered a megane scenic in Rome, and was offered a larger petrol lancia executive estate. My French Colleague had been given a 1.0 punto with no radio and no air con, to drive the 4 hours to our Italian factory.

** probably won't work in France, but might work in Munchen

Well, plans for anything other than a budget car have been scrapped. Lana was informed this morning she will no longer have a job in a week, although on the plus side at least she won't have to book any time off! Being a contractor I guess even a week's notice is better than none. I've got 5 weeks left on my contract and no word as to whether it will be renewed, so probably best not to splash out for a while...

Probably a daft idea to go away, but most of it is paid for and no chance of a refund, so might as well make the most of a bad situation.

Well, we got stung a bit with the budget car! Apparently you needed a credit card for them to reserve €1000 as a security deposit; and debit cards, or even cash were not sufficient substitutes. As I didn't have a credit card (which had to be in the driver's name), the only solution was for them to withdraw €300 from my bank (which hopefully will get refunded now we are back...), AND to pay the 'optional' insurance premium.

Meaning that €37 for 3 days became €97 :-( As a token gesture though, he did offer to upgrade the car from the cheapest, to a Focus estate they'd just got in...only 12 km on the clock!

It wasn't a bad car, but I still preferred even the Kangoo! The Focus had loads of torque, even from the 1.5 litre engine - and used about 25 litres of fuel to do 440 km. However the seats were rock hard, visibility was poor and a nightmare to judge where the actual corners of the car were. Plus it ate Lana's new birthday present CD, refusing to play or even eject as it didn't register that a CD was in the player. Serves us right for using old technology?

Tell the hire company that you charge a 300 euro CD breakage deposit and you want it back :)

When I hired in Malta I took the insurance out before I went. Issue was that they needed 1500 euro deposit. Tried on credit card but kept declining.  If I wanted to try Missus moog card they would have to add her to insurance so was cheaper to pay their daily rate.

Strangely the cost of the car went through on the machine with no issues.
