I remember those Sapphire Cosworths from back in the day! Back when ram raids and joy riding was very common.

Commercial Union House -  under construction here, and which I remember well as a student in the Toon back in the 80s - has recently been demolished.

Pearl Assurance house in my day. Sadly gone now. Along with the Odeon.

I loved that place, and the Tyneside Cinema across the road.

Saw my first and only ‘X rated’ movie at the Odeon.

Spoiler

Nothing dodgy of course. It was when Alien 3 was released, they had a triple of all three and the original print of Alien was rated ‘X’

I was only looking at the front, but on closer exam I think you're right.

I was walking along the opposite side of the road from the Odeon, must have been about 15, and I heard a "creakkk!" >> Shout "Watch Out!!" >> I half turned just as the [think it was second bottom] letter casing crashed to the pavement 😱😱

There was a guy walking past and $hit Me... He had a close, CLOSE shave...

Fellow on the ladder looked, err, a bit flummoxed 😮🤦

Interesting photo. I'm guessing that is post 1974 and therefore Northumbria Police as Washington was no longer in County Durham by then.

^ ^ ^ ...... Must've been a lousy undercoat 🙄. Seen the state of the bridge paintwork just now 😱

I moved up here in 1997 and the bridge has always been green. When did the old grey and blue get painted over?

It was green from build date but was painted blue and grey for a time in the 60s to reflect the council's livery at the time. Then it went back to green. No idea on specific dates though.

The corrupt leader of Newcastles Labour council in the 1960's, T Dan Smith, ran a painting firm. Wonder if they just so happened to get the lucrative contract to paint the Tyne Bridge a different colour back then?

If I know anything about corrupt local politics, I'd wager very yes.
