Oldsmobile has a new home!

I didn't think it was too bad either. The dimensions are 26.75" each way from the centre point, the spring is 2.5" wide and has 3 leafs.

Well as soon as the Rover Roffle is done and dusted, I will do the deed.

Also seeing a number of transmission filter kits, so it should be doable. Will need to look at the transmission sump properly. At some point.

Apart from the leak, the gearbox seemed fine.  It could slip a bit at full throttle when the ATF level got low, but top it up and all was well again.

Never had any problems with the driver's door lock - although the outside lock didn't operate the central locking, you had to open the door and press the button.  The only lock that gave me any problems was the boot (obvs), although the ignition lock could be a little fiddly until one got used to it.

Good news on the spring.  I've always been of the belief that these things should be made of metal rather than fibreglass anyway.

Ah, ok. Makes sense. What ATF did you use?

Lock - maybe it is a bit stiff. I'll lob some WD up it and see if that helps.

Cheers :)

Just standard Dexron II stuff - being an older GM box I figured that was probably what it was designed to run on.

I think I would have a go at repairing the spring.

Since it is just carrying the weight and not locating the wheel, what could go wrong? At worst you would be back where you started. Need to do a bit of research to find a compatible adhesive.

For the price of the glue and a set of aftermarket  support rubbers.....

Sounds very much like what my Lumina used to do, I suspect these FWD transmissions might be a bit weak.

That's completely normal for GM, pretty sure it's how they are supposed to behave.

^This.  Completely agree!

Interesting idea. Isn't there some panel adhesive that is used instead of welding stuff. It's not sikkaflex AFAIK but I cannot think of the name. You can get the support rubbers easily.

I guess plenty of clamps might not be a bad idea too :)

I had a closer look at the transmission sump piccie and I am sure I can see bolts all around it, so that should be easy enough to sort. If a new filter and ATF can sort out a Boxter on WD, then it can sort out a Cutlass Supreme on AS! Hell yeah.

Where are you? I've got two gallons of unused dex 2 knocking around somewhere and no vehicle that uses it anymore...

Hiya JD, sadly I be in 'that there London' but will be travelling to Liverpool for a family wedding in June 2016.

This may be a bit long to wait by the door with a couple of gallons of dex 2 in your hands :)

If anyone from the NW is coming to London.......................

Thanks fella, much appreciated re: the thought.

Actually, yes, I am, in about 3 weeks.  Jonathan, are you handy for Lymm Services on a Saturday?

And after that... what part of London are you in, Ken?

Posted

Oooooh. I'm in Edmonton (N9) 10 mins from J25/M25/A10.

So it wouldn't be too tough for you to slip over to Cricklewood, say?

Posted

Not at all problematic :) :) :)

I can then drug you, take you to a barn in Essex and make you fettle an Oldsmobile for a few months.

No problem whatsoever :)

Bloody hell, just looked up the cost of a new seal and filter for the auto box. Less than $2! I could treat it to a monthly change for that. Crikey Just have to figure out if it is 19 or 20 bolt, doh.

Boot lock and key - less than $5.

After thoroughly confusing myself poking around the lock up failing to find the ATF I have located it, and it's in my parents shed in Durham :(

Sorry :P

Go and get it as penance! Distance is no excuse :) Quickly now.....

No worries and thanks for the offer (useless bleeding scouser).

I was thinking about the fibreglass spring, did I read it was leaf?

I'd remove it and see if there were any similar made of metal that were used on other things.

The spring place that mended my Umm spring made springs to order, as that was discussed if they couldn't fix the spring. Depending on how complicated the spring is it might* not be too expensive to have one custom made from steel. iirc I was quoted around £120 to have an Umm spring made from scratch using my old one as a pattern.

It was something akin to leaf but the metal one I found to replace it is a 3 leaf jobbie.

Deffo going to have to remove it first and look at it properly.

Hopefully as soon as the manuals turn up I can have a good read through and work it all out.

They did, for a time, at the front only I believe. I want one for that very reason. The springs made by GKN in Wolverhampton. I used to visit there occasionally in the '80s. I think that part of GKN was sold to Germany.

I recall they were pitching composite springs to the Heavy market, but were trumped by the wide adoption of air springs.
