£47,250!!!!!!!!!!

RS Tax and then some. Could be a good investment though considering how much prices have rocketed over the past 5 years. I saw a Sierra RS500 advertised the other day for over £100,000

You could by everything that goes through cannock auctions for 6 months for that amount.

It's a classic car. Not just an old car, but a proper classic.

When some old Aston Martin from the sixties that drives like a lorry is worth £450'000, this is pretty reasonable.

Clean it up, service and MOT it every year and just sit on it. Low mileage and unmolested by a knuckle dragger  - find another one.

And the OGA* would still call it a Passat.   ;)

* as we fondly refer to the "old geezer auctioneer"...

Remember its another world out there. Where we get slightly sweaty about four figure asking prices other people don't blink at 5 figure sums.

I love enjoying cheap cars. My usual car outlay is roughly the road fund licence on a new Range Rover. £400ish

Er what? For that you buy about 5 messed up ones and put them back to factory

I am on a few Cosworth lickers groups and most of them can't believe that price either. It's not even a 500.

*edit* the 47k one, not the 120k one Andy posted a link to.

It was fairly predictable that they would start fetching mega money.

Just takes some Overly loaded tit to buy it at the price to set a precedent and they all go up to that level, like

EssDeeWon - said - another world

Is it a 'proper' classic?  Or the most over-hyped, overrated piece of rusty crap from a manufacturer that surely can only get the reviews and ratings it does by injecting serious cash into the right pockets.  You can almost see the 'Sponsored by Ford' logo on Clarkson's forehead now he's losing his hair!

It's this false, constantly re-enforced reputation that has been etched into the mindset of the masses that creates these embarrassingly inflated sums for certain types of car that really aren't as good as you'd hope.

Why is this so damaging?  Because genuine enthusiasts can now not afford the cars they want and the remaining examples will be left under a sheet in a heated garage for ever more.

I suppose it's related to this but I don't understand why people always want or feel that the fast* version of a car is the best one.

Admittedly I do own an XR2 but I wanted it as it has unique trim and stuff not because it's fast, to me it's no different from my 950 one.

Maybe it's the shitter in me though as I've always wanted a 3 door Sierra, but with a 1.6 pinto

Rusty Rocket has a point. Cosworths are over rated and not that fast by 2015 standards.

I'm sure that somewhere in Essex there are knives being sharpened at the thought of someone dissing a kohse but I'm allowed to. I've got one.

But I am slightly confused that in one sentence it is a rusting heap and in the next it is a tragedy that he can't afford one.

The price of classic cars has no bearing on how they drive or how well they were rust proofed. In sure most million pound Ferraris are a pig to drive and would dissolve if you left one outside.

Only a fool would expect a 25 year old car to be quicker than moderns though,

the reason the fast models of car are chosen is because they do drive better than the lesser models, its always nicer go have a bit more poke while driving.

People who complain about the price of cars are usually just pissed that they missed the boat, after all you never usually hear anyone complain if its a car they own.

Can anyone name a classic car that doesn't rust? It's not just a ford thing

They don't.....

A fiesta Supersport (1300) is worth more than the XR2 (1600).

Its ok mate, you could of just said "I don't like Fords!"

Someone should buy that and convert it into a 1.6L replica.

Come on this is Autoshite 1.3 or 1.6 base replica with dangly mirrors and black plastic grille.

As been said it's been obvious for years that these will skyrocket in price because of omgRStax and people buying them as an investment, admittedly that did shock me a bit, i was expecting £30,000 at the most, but anything can happen at auction, it will in turn eventually push the price up for non rs cars though just like what happened with mk1 and mk2 escorts

I thought that £47K for that Sierra was obscene until I found out that a Deltona in similar condition fetches £40K easily. So if you're in the market for a late-80s/early-90s homologation special, start playing the lottery.

I wonder what will be next... Early Imprezas and Lancer Evos are still affordable(ish) and pretty good to drive. Are they a good investment, or will collectors keep ignoring them due to their Japanese provenance ?

To make an Englishman shell out more money than he has braincells and sperm count combined, it must wear a Ford or VW badge.

This is to be taken literally, since even sub-divisions of these two makes will inevitably fail to attract substantial money. Lincoln and Bentley anyone?

For anything non-Ford and non-VW, an asking price of even as little as 300 quid will trigger haggling, offers of broken eggsboxes in exchange,

or offers of cash money that wouldn't buy you a two course meal.

So no, Imprezas or Lancers are not good investments, but GR12 4 wrapping around trees.

Brilliant Idea !!

Then take it to some Fast Ford Scene Show and place a mirror under the front end so everyone can see that nice clean shiny E-max engine.

It'll be that mysterious barn find dust that's added 10k to that price, seems to be more addictive than high quality cocaine lately

I remember a sad looking 3 door Cossie languishing behind Warranders in Bolton years ago and the sales guy offering me it for 3 grand....didn't seem worth it at the time, obviously with the benefit of hindsight...ARGH !

Actually I have no issue with the cars themselves, I was a regular at the RS Owners Club meets many years back. I think the same of 'scene' VW's and classic Minis... and I own three of those!

Holy fuck!  When did Sierras suddenly get so expensive?  Unbefuckinglievable...
