We're going to die in a big fiery ball (according to Jeep)

Just came home to find this letter from Jeep Chrysler about the '97 Grand Cherokee. Never had anything like this before.

Does anyone have any experience of recalls? It reads as though if I take it for inspection and they find corrosion around where they need to put in the new cross member then I'll have to pay for that to be repaired.

Recalls should all be free

That's what I thought but the line "This work will be carried out without charge, with the exception of any additional work required as a result of pre-existing collision damage or corrosion in the fitment area" makes me think the garage could just turn around and say that it had some corrosion and try and charge just to pay for their time.

I'm confused as to why they're recalling an 18 year old car.

Basically it means if it's had a bump and other work is reqd to fit the x member as a result you may be liable for the difference

I think many jeep owners wish their car would go up in a firey ball.

That's how I read it but as the car only owes me about £400 it would be financially pointless and I can't sell the car on as is, knowing that it could potentially go up in flames if it's rear ended. Just hope it doesn't require any extra work or I'll be parting it out which will be a PITA.

So you'll be charged if your 18 year old offroader has any rust?

Or, you can die in a fire.

It sounds that way :-(  I'll get it in the workshop tomorrow and have a good look underneath it for rust. It doesn't look like it's ever been offroaded so I might be lucky.

If it's rusty that's Jeep'sfault for not making it properly too. The only possible way they could even attempt to pass any cost on to you is if a sub-standard accident repair was discovered or a non approved or badly fitted tow bar, was found to have damaged the tank.

Hmmm... Surely tricky after 18 years?

My Mercury Sable was subject to a US recall in 1996 for an electrical fault that could possibly cause a fire at worst, or at best cause the headlights to fail. As the car was imported to the UK in 1995 it missed the recall and now has a burnt out headlight switch/wiring connector. Have ordered the parts (from America) to repair it. Can just imagine the response I would get if I turned up at the local Ford dealer asking for the work to be done under the recall.

I think this is pretty much the case with any 18 year old car. And a lot of newer ones.

I had a 1983 Mk1 Sierra that missed a recall in 1984 due to being on a RAF base in Germany. It was reimported, and I bought it... I went to buy some genuine parts for it, and used the VIN to identify the correct bits. A message flashed up about it missing the recall for headlamp wiring parts. The part I went in for? An ignition loom that got hot with the headlamps on..... I got it FOC.

I think you could be over worrying this. You car has a fuel tank which could explode in a crash.....

Meh, I'm not too worried about the burning to death thing, just pissed off that I may have to strip it for parts to get my money back.

Do let us know what they say...

If it is BER, make them replace it.... or buy it off you for market value of one in A1 condition. Obviously they know there's a problem, so they haven't a leg to stand on.

Rear end impact causes fuel leak; expolsion risk? Where've we all heard that before?

Oh yes, the famous 1971 6.jpg.   Care to let the rest of us in on this secret?

Yesterday, JUST yesterday. I got a letter from Honda, to tell me that my 2004 Accord, is subject to a safety recall, (which is how they got my address from the DVLA), which affects the passenger airbag. Apparently it will go off in a crash, but shards of metal and plastic might hurt the occupant of the passenger seat. Unfortunately they don't have enough stock, of the replacement part (a new airbag?) so I've got to wait to be contacted.

I'm going to write to them, thanking them for their honesty, and asking them to confirm how they are prioritising which cars to repair first. And pointing out that unless they can prove that they have an effective random selection system, I shall assume they are prioritising based on the customers dealership spend, and have therefore put me at the bottom of the priority system, because in the 5 years I've owned the car, they have no record of me ever using a dealership for any part.

And I shall remind them that should I have an accident and should my passenger be injured due to their airbag, I will be asking my solicitor to seek additional damages on my passengers behalf, since Honda had unfairly put our safety below that of more valued customers.

And then I shall point out that my car is available from every week from  Monday 8am to Friday noon, and a replacement whilst they repair it, will not be necessary.

I will also point out that if it's not repaired by September 1st, I will stop using the car and start invoicing them for an alternative, as I have a duty of care to my passengers, and now I know they could be injured, I can not really ask them to sit in the front seat without some liability for allowing them to be put into a situation that I now know to be dangerous.

I will also point out that having owned a used Honda I was thinking about buying a new one at some stage in the future, and their response to my letter would have a major baring on any future decision making.

Really ? Ffs they are recalling your car and the parts have gone to back order .

At least they have put their hands up and are doing the work .

Why does everyone need to play the blame game all the time ?

Pretty sure he was being ironic. I have an 02 CRV that Honda has tried to recall twice, once for some dodgy electrics that 'may catch fire in isolated cases' and once for the airbag as above.

I CBA with taking it it in, it's a 13 yr old car with 180k up it, I've had my money's worth, and it's not caught fire yet.

Dad had his defender recalled for 5 new Avon tyres for sidewalk cracking . He had worn them down to the wear indicators by then too . Happy days

Think it's a Ford Pinto, they had some bolts that would puncture the fuel tank in a hard rear impact. There was a famous memo where Ford decided not to recall because the cost (I think it was just for plastic caps over the bolts) would be more expensive than being sued from deaths/injuries.

Are you actually being serious, or just sarcasm/irony?

HAd a Honda Accord that was recalled over rear seatbelt tensioners. I saw it on the internet and phoned up. They said age was no problem and they checked the Vin and sorted it.

Y'know the more I read the above the more I think that it's not irony, and that this place has been mistaken for pisstun neds....

A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.
