My fault.  Failed to anticipate possible hazards.  Driving below speed limit but too fast for the circs.    Braked too hard.

Egads!! Man in self criticism and reflective resolution shocker concerning driving.

As a testament to the good hearted AS vibe, I mention that I have told the same story on the Dolomite Facebook group, with similar mea culpa confessions of twatty driving SKILLZ, but am still getting (mildly) flamed there for my trouble.  Autoshite is MOAR "Hail brother, for all of us art twats" and generally cuddlesome.

Everyone makes mistakes, well done for catching it in time though.  It sounds familar, I came close to spinning the Autoshite bike Rover 220 on a greasy roundabout a couple of weeks ago and it was pure luck there was no-one to my left as the car fishtailed merrily about or I'd have taken them out.  Whilst obviously not a good thing, I reckon an occasional near miss like this can be considered a positive if it serves as a warning to fix the car or helps to learn a bit more about car control.

Seems like Mr Grey Car needs to clear his lights/reflectors (as do you)! Not that it'll help much, the dipped sealed beams are utterly dire even compared to other 70's sealed beams.

Also, don't drive in snow at night. The dipped beams get hot enough to melt the snow, high beams don't. I had to stop every 5 miles to brush the snow clear on a 60 mile trip last winter...

Halogen upgrade is recommend. Cheap enough and make sure you use relays or it go bang and the Lucas electrical smoke will fuck off elsewhere.

Two hundred miles of go fast Dolly in the dark and lashing rain yestereve.  I reckon that I was in the only seventies car on the road for miles all around.   I saw a few very late nineties and early noughties chodboxes, giffRovers mostly, but that was all.   Good tyres on this Dollyheap, I must say.  Vinegar on the screen and wipers helped a bit, but the lights are still shiz.

The heater sucks mahoosive monkey chunks.

Stick some LED jobbies in the sideligh bulb holders. They give a much brighter and cleaner light. Not very useful for seeing but much better for being seen in my humble opionion.

The Dolly has gone off to a garage for various fixages.  I have also found a brand new rear door skin on eBay, so yay.

Posted

The Dolly does look good parked in the station car park and I would rather come back to it than a modern.

An update.  The Dolly went in to get a new rear door skin in May. The body shop took ages to do the work.  I chased a bit, but not much as my mind was elsewhere.  When the car finally came back it was out of MoT and running rough, and the overdrive wasn't working.  Off to a good local garage, that also kept the car for ages. Again I did not chase much because my head was elsewhere.  The garage eventually finished the car, having solved the rough running by taking the carbs to bits and putting them back together, and fixed the overdrive and also the cooling fan.  They insisted on only charging 230 quid for a fair chunk of work, and delivered the car to my gaff the other day.  It is running peachy fabuloso, and delivering the stabbed rat performance that a Sprint should.  The tyres are old, so I will get it some new ones, and then it may go even better.  Vroom.

In other news...

The tranny on the FREE Five Series started to kersplunk, so I bought a 2004 3 litre pezza X Type Estate for two bags.  Racing green, beige levva, toyz, not apparently rusty, 94,000 miles.   Autobox, but seems a pretty good car.   I have had the engine oil and transmission and transfer box oil changed, and renewed a wheel bearing and some suspension bits, and it goes OK.  Very grippy with the AWD and its reasonable tyres.  A bit thirsty - averaging 26 mpg.

I sold my Excel and my Landy.  I miss the Landy.  Six Cylinder bought my Daimler. The Rover SD1 is going fine, but I want to sell it and am open to offers.

Good to see the Dolly still giving good service, and also good to see you back, BV.

A hearty welcome back.

I have been drinking (it's already Christmas here in Germany) so cannot be trusted to form a rational judgement about the 2600. It's a lovely thing and a very tempting motorway proposition but two SD1s might sound to a sober man like a special sort of madness.

Good to see you back.

The Daimler is up and running with brake master cylinder rebuilt and new MOT in August. It still looks the same and I am planning to take it to Brackley car gathering 27th Dec and Stony Stratford 1st Jan. There are no plans to part with it.

I bought the Alfa 156 too and after a stiff bill soon after I got it, it has just passed its next MOT needing nothing this month. I still love driving it and it will stay around a bit longer yet.

Indeed, a hearty Christmas welcome back to BV72, I've missed your cars, humour and way with words.
