Shite needed. Inspiration lacking

Howdy. Long time lurker here, thought I had better break myself in as I am in need of inspiration for a new* steed for the Mrs, which I can then use as my own without her thinking it!

Currently "she" has an '89 MX5 which we have had for 2 and a bit years, love it but it is becoming a bit crusty and I think the thrust bearing is on the way out, both agree it has been a fun car but looking for something else now. I am about to stick 12 month MOT on it and push it onto another rust loving person to weep over.

Have been looking online at Pajero/Shogun in SWB flavour, I quite fancy a 4x4 load lugger with towbar potential. Have read plenty about HG failures, and their appetite to rust as bad as an MX5 which is never a good start but when you are in this territory, what is!

Looking at around £1200-ish, pre-95 for Peter James insurance friendliness, not too fussed on MPG as it will only do about 3k a year tops, I have a company car that we both use and also a '67 HB Viva which is the "good" classic.

Suggestions welcome!

Thanks

You do realise that every shiter and his dog is now going to suggest the heap or heaps they are currently trying to re home , don't you?

Totally unbiased suggestion would be SWB Patrol, seem pretty unloved and maybe a bit more durable than Mitsubishis.

Have a look at Vauxhall Fronteras or the Vauxhall Monterey. Both are just rebadged Isuzu's if you look at montereys avoid the 3.0 diesel and look for the 3.1 diesel.

Presumably having owned an MX5 she is attracted to small Japanese things. So in the same vein I'm going to suggest a Mk1 MR2. If that is insufficiently chod-worthy or has no engine in the front gap then an MGF.

Or the unloved MX3, it has 6 of the things the MX5 has only 4 of so must be better.

Ha, I did kind of let myself in for that one... still always open to ideas so it might not have been a bad thing! Just had a look at the Patrol, surprisingly not that many about but will keep looking..

I think it is time to move away from the rwd jap area, fun as it has been, I must admit I am kind of drawn to the MX6 though... might have to do some convincing. I did show her a Mk1 Mondeo saloon in full ghia spec which gave me stirrings downstairs, but was flatly refused. Women, eh?

Seconded on the MGF. It's the Shiters soft-top of choice and you can get 4 of them for the sort of mad money you are waving about

^^^ what he said. Makes perfect sense. I love 'em.

Be careful. I'm with Peter James and phoned up for a quote on the 1990 Carina Estate that was in the eBay thread. I asked if it was 25 years at which a car became 'classic', the guy on the phone, said 'no, twenty' - thinking my luck was in he asked what car it was - once told he took a sharp intake of breath and said; 'something like that would need to be 30 years old'.  I was too tired to argue, but WTF?

Eek that's worth knowing, I've been with them a while and just assume that anything over twenty will be fine to the point that I wouldn't ask before buying it.

I insured a 1991 Volvo 440 and 1992 Cavalier with them in the last couple of months, so unless they changed the situation very recently that's a load of cock.  Phone up again and get a different person, you'll probably get the answer you want then.

If you decide on a Volvo V70, for Chrissake check the driveshaft boots and make sure the handbrake works.

I speak from experience.

It mocks a new traffic sign spotted in the Country Of The Unlimited Number Of Laws.

Anyway, I'm not going to suggest any shite here, because nobody ever listens to me anyway, despite I'm always right.
