Anybody had one?

What are the issues? A better / more interesting alternative to a focus?

Prices seem to be all over the place.

The floor is yours gents....

I think tetleysmooth is your man here, are they not largely focus-based? Capable, less capable than a V70 but still useful, possibly riddled with DMF issues, don't really rust, clutch might be a bastard to change, brake servo likewise?

I don't really know anything about them so this may all be lies and slander...

If I remember right early ones are part mitsubishi carisma with 1.9 VAG turbo diesels.

Seem to be reliable busses though, only really the GDi efforts that had issues with sooting the valves up.

The original V40s had a Renault 1.9 diesel engine

The new V40s are a Focus in disguise so will likely come with Ford's 'value engineering'

Nearly bought one of those in January, but plumped for a Saab 9-5 estate instead ;)

Ok, the v40 is basically same car as carisma, but better. Late ones are really nice places to be, great seats and pretty hardy old things. The diesel ones have the renault laguna diesel engine..... But, and im not sure why, they seem to be far less problematic in the volvo, i have had some with huuuuge mileages and still going great. They do lots of different petrol variants too, the 200bhp T4 is ace. I would look out for a 2000 or later one, the interiors are better as is the gearchange. The gdi's as in the carisma is best avoided, but if a 1.8 is your thing they offered gdi and non gdi options, as well as astmatic 1.6 , 1.9 turbo and 2.0 turbo. I thing they slso squeezed the five cyl engines in but i have never seen one.

Looks like i was speaking shite about 5 cyl ones..... But am still googling because im not 100% :)

The later Focus based ones are available with a straight 5, but the earlier ones are all in-line 4.

I'm a bit indifferent about them, buy a proper Volvo.

My mate had big plans of replacing his focus with one because it 'would be more reliable'. Soon changed tack when I pointed out the large amounts of shares DNA

We're currently rocking an 03 versatile forty, a turbo diesel one. Covered most stuff in that first thread ^^^

Basically:

Get as late model as you can,

bonnet catches will stop working

brake callipers will seize

steering is a bit vague

trim is flakey and un-volvo

best we can get is 45mpg on motorways

headlamp wash/wipe is for winnahs

can't think of another dull estate car we'd rather have for the money

I can't comment on the diesels, as I had the 2.0 litre petrol auto.

Nice cars as far as I'm concerned, wouldn't mind a bash at a 200 bhp T4.

I recently sourced an early diesel estate for my brother in law. It has the Renault engine, and looks suspiciously like the lump in their old Scenic DTi.

The petrol's are the best. 1.8 B4184S2 or 2.0 B4204S2. MPG will be poor but they soldier on very well.

We seem to have a load of group knowledge on the older Mitsubishi based V40 but less on the Ford ones. The shite collective moves into new territory.
