Looking forward to more hardcore LADA pics. Used to see a fair few riva estates around here then they all disappeared overnight in the late 90s

In the 80's when I lived in Weymouth there was a small Russian cargo ship that came in about once a month. Can't remember what they unloaded but as soon as they arrived the crew would be out buying Lada's and raiding all the scrapyards for parts which they chucked on their ship and sold back in Russland for large profits. A gf I had at the time sold hers to them for twice the market value, which pleased her no end. They said they could sell them for 4 times that.back home. Needless to say within a year there were very few left in Dorset.

They did this around Hull as well, mums 1200L went back to Russia

I forgot how fucking brilliant the back end of the Riva estate looks! :D

The Riva is a great looking car both in stock and (some) modified forms.  Seems to me like you got a pretty nice deal with these two, market values have gone a bit crazy on both old Datsun and Ladas so a straight swap even with the epic journey is on the face of it quite a good deal.  I look forward to reading your adventures with the new car.

My day in pictures! Glad to be back home now.

The Lada is a very fine steed, I love it.

That last photo has calendar shot all over it: number plate light out and jerry can bouncing about in the back. Love it

Lada looks bloody great, wish I'd bought one when I had the chance.

At first I thought you were being ripped off but the Riva looks ace.

I'm sure many people would rather have the datsun but it didn't owe me much, I didn't enjoy driving it and couldn't afford to miss the opportunity to get one of my dream cars.

The lada is a better driving car and I really enjoy driving it.

Lada looks great. You have some interesting old stuff on your fleet.

Has the Lada been lowered?

I remember them looking all gangly and ungainly, but that one looks really purposeful.

It has been lowered by angle grinder. It actually drives really well on the chopped springs. There's a set of 70mm lowering springs and shocks in the back of the car but I'm not sure whether to fit them. I just spotted a set of 13x7 alleycat rallye specials for sale locally so the temptation is there to lower it and stick some cool wheels on it.

I think it would look awesome on these wheels. daec619d6a1e48b3388d98b47b932221.jpg

That is one handsome car!

Any chance of some interior pictures, for titillation purposes?

As much as i hated my Riva, It was a laugh.

I remember the heater didn't work so it had a 12v fag lighter effort screwed to the top of the dash.

Mine had a tow bar but it couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding but it was only a 1300.

Is yours the 1500?

Mine's the 1500 with the 5 speed box, it's had a rev counter stuck in where the voltmeter is so it's very well spec'd for a Lada. The blowers on mine work but they aren't very good. Did the fag lighter heater work at all?

I remember it was very noisy but that could be that it was worn out ( i didn't fit it)

If pointed at the screen, it would clear the mist but not all that quickly. It wasn't suitable for heating the car though.

IIRC, it was mounted on a swivel base so you could direct it where needed.

Mine ended up going back to Russia like the others above but only because the clutch slave failed and i didn't need to fix it as i had another car by then and had only bought the Lada with MOt and tax for £30 to get me from Kent to Nottingham and back as it was cheaper than the train.

This was about 14 years ago though.

Can you turn your steering wheel from left to right whilst going in a straight line at speed without the car actually following your direction? Mine did it and it was scary as fuck when trying to correct course after a high sided vehicle passing....

The play in the steering is pretty minimal on this one, The 120y was woeful which is part of the reason I didn't enjoy driving it. I figured the Lada couldn't be any worse to drive than the Datsun. The steering, engine and clutch are better but the gearbox isn't as refined.

Trial fitted the wheels tonight, they will require a spacer to clear the front calipers but I'm not sure I'm going to bother fitting them as I like the steels better.

This Lada is well travelled, new in East Anglia, then to Anglesea, now in Scotlandshire with FOAD Motorsâ„¢
