You'll be pleased to hear that instead of being a proper petrol head and swapping the 240 for a t5, I instead swapped it for this shed.

Crusty 2.0 W123. OOOFT.

Only way it could be better is if it was a NA diesel estate...

Bloody hell that's nice.   Base Merc is the only way to Merc.

Flog the plate to a W126 coupe licker and you'll have a year's free taxi-ing

Looks great, lightweight spec too, with the keep fit windows. Proper summer cruiser, a definite beaver magnet.

I'm enjoying wafting around in this barge, I've been driving it to work this week and apart from the play in the steering and the diff whining its a decent old car to drive. It does need a good scrub inside and a patch welding on the rear but other than that its solid enough.

Looks smart. Looks better with the red trims on, does it have all 4?

Must be true - my 280E got me through a divorce, an affair, 2 girlfriends and ended up being the present Mrs Rocker's daily for a while.

How is Foadwerx tyre fitting services these days? Got some tyres to swap onto the Freelanders rims, happy to pay a few quid for a shot of your apparatus. Cough.

Hubcaps back on!

It does have a full set, I took them off to see what it looked like with just black steels but I think I prefer the hubcaps even if the red centres look a bit barry.

No, the body colour on the hub-caps looks old money (where old money was, by then, not much money, so they bought the base model and kept it forever)

Something exciting happened!

Initially I had thought there might have been a separate key for the door lock as the key went in but didn't give any hint of actually turning. After removing a couple of screws and battering it with a mallet I nearly managed to remove the door handle. I chucked some oil at it and with a bit of wiggling I managed to free it off. I fitted the handle back onto the door and now it locks.

Earlier I tried adjusting the play in the steering with the locknut on the steering box, I had read online that a little bit of play was needed to stop prematurely wearing out the box so left a little bit of play in the steering wheel and took it for a drive.

It still feels a bit unstable but certainly better, I'm not sure if it's down to the tyres, tracking or steering box.

i would imagine the nut behind the steering wheel may also be a contributing factor

I know they did an even worse version than this, a 240D auto, lots of noise, with little progress

I notice it's got a sunroof , is it the manual slider that feels as if you could use it as guillotine if you close it at the same time as braking? The electric one on a 280 I had was nowhere near as much fun.

I'm sure you could get a 200D auto as well.

Relaxing.

I've driven a 240D manual and it went ok, you just need to drive around the lack of power.

That Merc looks great! It nearly looks like brand new!

Excellent find and purchase. You should send photos of it to the guy on eBay who has been trying to sell one for £2k for over 2 months…..

I haven't purchased it just yet, I may need to clear some more space. Also got a Subaru Forester coming next week.
