Vince70 Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 No Sir, even on this ocasion I'm right, as always.Only people who gave up sex a long time ago and play golf put the spare wheel on the bootlid.I could never play Golf.. But I think your right about the sex as I'm now resorting to POF to find a girlfriend which I'm telling you now isn't the place to look as I found that the number 40 translates to 60 on that site. And average size and only a picture of a face normally means their 30 stone plus lol Sorry for the thread highjack lol Junkman and IanMacfarlane 2
cort16 Posted April 25, 2015 Author Posted April 25, 2015 I've finally got all the shit I need for this thing. I got asked to do a survey at the end of my rimmer bros purchase, which I completed to the order of that they're a bunch of sheep shagging cowboys who hold the old car community to ransom. My main gripe being their 8 quid delivery charge for 2 washers and a tube of gasket sealant seems a bit of the excessive side. I actually got a response from them saying if I hadn't bought the sealant it'd be 2 95 for delivery, which showed me. twats. I should also say that something I've suspect for a few years has actually came to realisation. This is that I'm a hapless bastard who has no actual idea what he's doing and due to the purchase of a couple of new tools am seriously nearing the category of all the gear and no idea. Anyway during the week I went and took the inlet manifold off and took it back to my other lockup, which contains things such as power and all my tools. The problem was the dead otter stuck in the inlet manifold with the heads of the bolts sheared off it. I ground the remains if the heads flush with my Aldi power file, which is actually excellent. P6 by cort16, on Flickr I tried to helicopter the remains of the switch out through the top but in the process knocked it into the inlet manifold so had to take the thermostat and housing off. Luckily nothing broke and no one fell into the manifold. P6 by cort16, on Flickr Dead otter P6 by cort16, on Flickr I had to make up a blanking plate. I did this earlier in the week then fucked it up at the very last minute and had to start again this morning. This could never happen again right? P6 by cort16, on Flickr Next I had to drill out and tap the holes. What could go wrong? Time to break out my 40th birthday present from my Dad that's been sitting in the box for about 6 months. I HATE drilling holes in metal as it takes so long, I get bored, put it flat out and overheat the drill bit. This is so awesome at it just chomps through super thick steel no bother. P6 by cort16, on Flickr I man handled the manifold onto the shelf thing after starting the holes off with the hand drill so it didn't slip. I was at 100% concentration so I didn't fuck it up yet..... Nothing says, "I fucked this up" like a slice taken out of a washer or plate to make it fit.. I must have moved like 2mm and elongate the hole so I just had to go with it and drill the hole even though it wasn't quite in the right place. I hope it holds or it'll be chemical metal time. P6 by cort16, on Flickr I cleaned up the manifold with some wd40 and wet and dry and it's good to go back on the car. I hope. In preparing to fail I've not failed to prepare. I bundled all the shite I needed and dropped it off at the car in the other lockup with the battery out the cortina (although I have my doubts about it cranking a v8 ) with plans to take a crack at fitting it all back onto the car tomorrow. Here's a question. Should I put some instant gasket around the water port on the manifold or is the tin gasket up to the job? P6 by cort16, on Flickr nacho man, Vince70, Semi-C and 5 others 8
cort16 Posted April 26, 2015 Author Posted April 26, 2015 I managed to slip out in the dead of morning and get 2 hours on this . The gasket is a right fuck around trying to get it line up with all the holes.Being a ham fisted twat I managed to dent a bit of it in a non crucial area but just kept going. I probably should have bought one if the fancy composite jobs. Anyhow I got the manifold back on and all the bolts in. Now I have to put it back together having not taken it Apart and with my only reference being a manual for a different car. It should be fine. scruff 1
cort16 Posted May 2, 2015 Author Posted May 2, 2015 I got most of the hoses pipes and brackets re-connected this morning. It took longer than expected as I had no idea where anything went so had to spend ages dicking about googling pictures of Rover engines.Once together to a point thatI was fairly sure it wasn't going to burst into flames I turned the key and even though the lights came and the clock started ticking I got nothing. Not even a click. The battery I'm using is from the Cortina and is capable of cranking that bastard for about the 15 minutes it takes to get it going from cold so was pretty sure it was good. Plus it's 640A, crank level Nuclear. image by cort16, on Flickr I also found this cable in the boot with all the other parts., which really confused me as it looks like a battery cable.. I still don't know what it's for.Any ideas? image by cort16, on Flickr I needed a battery for it anyway so pissed off to a local factors who told me I couldn't get one with enough cranking power that would fit in the p6 battery hole. I went around to halfords and there was a choice of about (75 quid mind you). This factors is like something out of one of those "hoarding shat in my kettle" TV programs. You have to climb over batteries, exhausts, boxes of air fresheners and other shite to get to the counter. You can't get to anything on any of the shelves as the isles are chock a block full of brake disc boxes and batteries. Fucking hopeless. I recon they've got so much stuff as they can't find anything so order the same thing 7 times. Anyway I got back, put the battery in and still nothing. The cowling for the gear lever that shows the gear you're in is missing but I assumed the gear lever was in Park it being fully forward.. It was but the thing that stops it starting in gear only seems to work in neutral. Once in neutral it cranks and I'd like to say it fired right up but I managed to dislodge the choke by being a bellend and pulling the cable right out so had to cable the choke on. Once I gave it a bit of choke it fired right up then settled to an idle of erm, 2500 rpm. Okay I've got some work to do the springs on the throttle are only connected on 1 carb, the choke is set by a cable tie, the throttle is fouling on on a heater hose, none of the airfilter stuff is on and I think I may have made a fatal flaw sealing the water port of the inlet manifold with sealant as I can see a bit of dampness around the bolt. Other than that though... Apologies for the Steven Spazburg quality of the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZDUbPRMhXo Once it's not wedging the throttle on at 4000 rpm I'll take for a quick spin around the yard at my lockup then if all is okay I'll get it on the road sans bumpers. I actually missed out on a 25 quid front bumper on ebay because I drank too much beer and fell as sleep. I got offered a really good front one for 200 quid but I recon that's the max I could pay for front and back together so said no. I've even started looking at what bumpers I could modify to fit it. cort16 Posted May 20, 2015 Author Posted May 20, 2015 I hate cars. Seriously why the fuck do I bother I've no time to work on them so the minutes and hours I do get are filled with frustration and the sound if a ticking clock? The bumpers for instance . There was someone localish chimed up in Facebook saying they had a set. First of they needed help from family to dig them out. The family member was working or not available over a couple of weeks period. Not heard anything for a bit so chased now the story is the bumpers are locked in the shed and the keys are lost and the tools to break the padlock are in the shed. Ffs Give me strength. I heard of a p6 in a scrappies in glasgow so set off to see if I could get the bumpers off it.FUCKED. The bumpers where rotten and every bolt seized on. It wasn't on old wheels so no access other than rolling around in broken glass so I fucked off home. Now, during the manifold refit the choke cable had slid down the cable so I took some bits off the dash to try to refit it. It's fucked. There's a kink in it and it won't push down the liner. If it was about 2cm more I could pull it out the end but it isn't so it won't . New choke cable then ? Look at the kinky bastard! Also I made up a washer with a bend in it to use as the missing throttle return spring mount but as my drill is 1 mile from the car the fucking bolt hole is the wrong size so it's useless. Time spent 1 hr , progress made? More broken than before . In cortina news it's either now in the garage owned by my landlord being worked on for it's mot or it's been stolen as it's certainly not in my lockup any more. I should probably check up on that actually but I have to presume any self respecting ford thief would also have nicked the fishnet recaros sitting next to it as they're probably worth more than the car. Anyway I'm getting a bit pissed off having 2 shitey old cars I can't drive and forking out nearly 200 sheckes a month in lockup rent for cars I have no time to drive or work on. I'm considering sacking off the lockups , selling the lot once they're all functional and buying an m5. The 2 of them have got to be worth 4 grand right? HillmanImp Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Wasn't every BMW you bought last year an absolute disaster finacially? At least the older cars are fixable by us average Joes. The BMW is probably needs someone with a masters degree in computer science to repair even the simplest malfunction.
cort16 Posted May 21, 2015 Author Posted May 21, 2015 I'm just moaning as I'm frustrated by having to no time to work on my cars so subsequently can't drive them as they're broken. You start to lose the faith when all you do is spend money on them but don't get to drive them. As a result you forget how awesome or otherwise they are to own so all you see is money going out and any precious spare time you have to work on them being eaten away by frustrating little jobs.I recon I need to get the P6 drivable enough to get it up to the house so I can tinker with it when ever I fancy rather than having to jump in the car to go and do stuff. Finding some bumpers would help. I do actually have a masters degree in computers science (well an HND). That BMW was completely shit but it was an E60, which are horrible. These E39's are made of sterner stuff and I recon in the future this model of m5's are going to be pretty desirable given their relative (compared to an E60 M5 but not a p6) lack of complexity and 6 speed manual as standard. I've wanted one of since they came out so it's not just a sudden urge to to buy one but I've just not had the cash available to buy one and justify it as a 2nd car. I know the pit falls I've read a LOT of stuff about them. I'll probably change my mind once I get the Cortina back. This video is where the m5 love all started for me. Vince70 1

cort16 Posted May 21, 2015 Author Posted May 21, 2015 Are we looking at the same car? I've had 3 of these all of the same age and all with similiar rusty blebs and none of them have been rotten underneath . If I was actually going to spend 6 grand to buy that I'd go and see it I'd never spend that cash site unseen .

If I was actually going to spend 6 grand to buy that I'd go and see it I'd never spend that cash site unseen . Both tank straps (one fell off), one sill required weldage for Mot and the other just scraped through, rot around filler aperture, new front wing required, rust in all the door tops and you could put your fist through the hole under the spare wheel. It did live in Shetland for a while, but I can't image that being kept in coastal Ayr would be much better...
