Montego collection - not looking good - but maybe not too bad either!

These seats are going to take some cleaning. Round one on the back seat with some Wilkinson upholstery cleaner, it has took the grime off and they smell quite nice but there are some very deep stains, some of them look a little dubious! A couple look like they could be from activities more related to the bedroom! I'm hoping not. The car is full of mud including on the inside of the rear nearside window - no footprints in sight though!

Still can't get the brake lights to work, I have noticed when I put the lights on one the nearside one of the brake lights lights up with the tail lights so there is obviously some kind of short. I have sprayed both sides with lube and the switch but no joy as yet, will have a look again tomorrow.

Check all the earths at the clusters and any old towbar wiring at the back.

That looks wonderfully grim. What sort of vaccinations did you need before you got in it?

Got a Vax cleaner?

No I haven't.

I think I may know someone who has though.

Will even that do the job?

Lol I needed a shower. The two squashed foil pie dishes were the best. One was stuck to the bottom of the mat!

Will do, thanks.

Foil pie dishes!!! That has to be a first! I await more piccies, heroic cleaning action and much happiness.

Well just swapped the tyres around at the front. First I put the spare on the front NS (which was the tyre I suspected might be faulty) but it was as bad. I then put the front OS on the NS and it was as bad. When driving slowly you can actually see the front of the car waddling! It must be something to do with the wheels but I can't imagine having more than one buckled wheel/faulty tyre.

I might try putting the back on the front see if that makes a difference!

Posted

Solved almost! Put the rear tyres on the front and vice versa. The front is fine but now the back "waddles"!

Broken brake switch would keep the brake lights on.

The brake light bulbs on these are two terminal not single, try a different bulb.

Posted

when i had a kippered switch on the metro, there was no brake lamps at all.

by bridging across the terminals with some wire the lamps came on, and after fitting a new switch, the lamps came on just like they should.

If I remember rightly he was doing huge miles delivering pizzas in it, or something, which made it cost effective to convert to LPG!

Imagine getting your pizza delivered in that! Of course it would only be used to deliver prawn cocktail and black forest gateaux flavoured pizza with a free bottle of Quatro

I know a guy who did this in order to clean up the inside of his Haweh the lads Bluebird. The seat stitching fell to bits when they dried out.

I find the best thing for a really grubby smelly car is just take the lot out and TFR it then jetwash it. Wait til warmer weather as it takes a bit to dry but it takes any nasty smells out

Just don`t try it with the headlining.............

The Montego is not looking too good. I took it up to my friendly mechanic who is a Leyland enthusiast to look it over for mot purposes.

He says it is not worth repairing and is usually a glass half full person (he welded up my Renault 14)!

Structurally it needs only a little bit of welding however he says it needs:

New front discs and pads

There is a rattle from the front suspension which he can't trace

The clutch has gone (it did start slipping when I drove to the garage)

The headlamp at the front where it has had a prang is mis-aligned

He says it sounds rough

This is on top of the non functioning brake lights (probably only a small job) and the need for a replacement bumper.

He reckons if it was a really nice example it would be worth doing but not for this one

I think I am going to have to ebay it and see if I can get some of the £200 back I paid for it as with the Princess needing some work the Montego is not going to be a priority.

If someone who can do the work themselves feels so inclined to take it off my hands for £150 then let me know. I am still awaiting the log book from the DVLA,

It's sad but I haven't the money to spend on this, if it only needed the welding and say the brakes I might have bothered but it is going to cost far more than its worth to put it right.

I don't know if you can do your own work, but if so I reckon you're only* looking at a couple if hundred quid tops, probably nearer £150. Is it not worth trying it?

I think that would look fab with a small black stuffed under the bonnet

It is do-able and I have spent money on some quite rough cars the R14 and the Black Maxi.

I don't mind that it's a little tatty and I wasn't stupid enough to think it would sail through an MOT.

Unfortunately certainly changing a clutch and welding are beyond me I neither have the skills not the premises, I have the road outside the house and quite a steep drive. Brakes are something I try and avoid touching as last time nearly ended in disaster.

If I could get the work done and MOT'd for around £150 to £200 I might consider it. I bought it in the first place as the guy was about to scrap it as he was told it had to be gone from his employers premises, he didn't exactly show it in a shining light but many of the problems it has he hadn't pointed out. I realise that buying a car unseen is a risky business and one that so far has usually been worth the risk so far for me but with a £200 bill for the Princess MOT I am not sure I am so fussed about spending a lot on this car, a car which is not exactly a prime example.

That said I wouldn't want to scrap it and don't intend to.

I will find out where the welding is and how much it needs. It also needs the heater matrix repairing or replacing as that is currently by-passed.

EDIT: The welding is just at the back of the sill so that wouldn't be much

Clutches slipped when they were new. I would'nt worry.

Of course it's not worth it - it's a povo spec montego.

Which makes it worth doing.

Agreed Pete. It might be a bit out of your depth and it will certainly be a steep learning curve but a learning curve nontheless which will arm you for the next project to take on.

Have you thought about removing the LPG kit and selling it seperately? It might not bring in much but it's a start.

I purchased it without the LPG kit as he wanted (understandably) quite a bit extra for it and with the mileage I do it wouldn't really have been a benefit.

I'll have a think regarding what I want to do!

disks and pads are the biggest piece of piss going on a monstro

I wouldn't worry about the clutch just yet, boot it in 5th from 30mph and see if it slips, if not then go gentle on it and it may last you until you've got the funds? The rest of it sounds easy enough.

Had a quick look on eurocarparts and they are doing discs for £11.94 eacHow for eicher. Or you could pay a whopping £18 for paid ones.

You could do the bare minimum for an MOT then decide if it's worth keeping

Posted

Thanks Guys.

I will look into getting it MOT'd then decide what I will do with it once it's MOT'd!

Trouble is I acted on impulse thinking "I'll save this car" without taking into account the financial considerations once I had purchased it!

I may have a go at the brakes myself.

The clutch is slipping, it did it when I took it up to the garage, hopefully, it will hold out for a couple of months.
