What. A. Weekend!

I had such a blast, meeting everybody and being warmly welcomed, treated to a pornorama of motor vehicles, beautiful base camp locations, eye-lickingly stunning roads, convoys, comedy, it had it all.

All the thanks must go at Mat & Ian for laying this on, simply class A work.

Also special thanks to Will for allowing me aboard his Exocet 205, in the words of Montague Withnail, "Forgive me"

Additional thanks to everyone else, y'all made it a trip to remember.

Warwick services has been reached. I saw a morgan on the m40 too, havent seen one for ages!

An excellent weekend and a good workout for the 850. It seemed to be much livelier on the A roads back from Kincardine, not that it was slow before.

Thanks to Ian and Mat for organising this, both the venues were excellent.

My favourite car to drive was Edd's Alpine. It was the only one that I was able to jump in and drive flat out right away, I suspect that quite a lot of the video will be diagonal.

Thanks to everybody who let me drive their cars. Not many people can say they've driven an Isuzu Piazza, and even fewer can say they have driven a Pleasure Wagon.

That Alpine must win some kind of `spirit of autoshite award`

It should never be restored and kept in that state as a tribute to bodgery. When I were a lad you used to see lots of cars like that running about but the art of bodgery is being lost. It just needs a red door or wing to complete the look

It may look like shit but it's spot on mechanically. No clunks or bangs and it does exactly what it's told.

The Alpine was maybe car of the show for me, although there was hot competition from the Piazza, Cortinas, Retrogeezer's stunning Escort.  Oh and Conrad's Lancer.  And the Aerodeck...and... oh fuck it.

Renault got me home very happily in one piece, and even overtook another car somewhere between Llandeilo and Ammanford.  Those who went in it will know that this is no small achievement - it was downhill and took a lot of planning and a very long stretch of empty road.

My route home was flippin ace, with precisely zero dual carriageway involved:

Fantastic weekend - thanks from me too:

  • to Ian and Mat for organising
  • to everyone who let me have a go in their car
  • to FPB7 for fixing my brake lights just by looking at the switch with that special fierce look born of years of training and experience
  • to Conrad Conelrad for not driving into the back of me in spite of the lack of brake lights - sorry for turning a Saturday afternoon jaunt into a white knuckle ride
  • to everyone who gave me stuff (notably Trigger for brochure, Bub2006 for letting music into my life and Mr Fowler for breakfast) and who did/said nice things.

Great to see everyone again / meet people in person.  Can't wait for next year.

I am officially home! 468 miles covered, bloody ace weekend!

When/where next year?

It was entertaining listening in on the SVM radio, I had my own walkie talkies... The best bit was Adrian radioing that we'd lost an Alto when I had to pull in after my throttle cable came loose. It was definitely the most organised convoy I've been a part of and the SVM were great at keeping everyone together.

We're well practised in the art of convoys and strict regulations were put in place after losing Adrian on the way to Devil's Bridge last year. As for the nonsense talk....it happens. Just be grateful we didn't start singing and holding the radio up to the speakers in the car when something monumentally crap was achieved from the mp3 choon boxes.

I think you have myself and KruJoe to thank blame for that. Sorry. Lol.

In Unrelated News...how are the brakes?

You'll all be pleased to note that not only do I remain in possesion of my own unbruised testicles, the Kia (still broken) may even be allowed to stay on fleet. At least until she sees me poured into it. Possible 1.8 conversion on the cards, Will Cleland ain't having rights to the terrifying hatchback crown.

Thanks again to Mat and Ian for setting up what is arguably THE event on my motoring calendar, Will for making that fucking terrifying Peugeot, those who let me drive their chod, Anonymous User for not bothering to show up meaning I couldn't deck him and special thanks to Neil Touring for piloting the Mighty Pride all the way from Wales to Brother Touring's house, where it promptly expired.

Car of the event for me, despite the hoonfest E30 335i and the Exocet 205 being far more capable, was the Alpine; that car had no right to be that good.

Next year?

We've discussed this.

Some people won't come from the south coast to Wales 'cos it's "too far away" so what do you think the attendance would be like if we were to hold it north of the border?

That is a valid concern, which is rather depressing given the lengths you lot will go to just to see a field full of shite. And also depressing because Scotland is wonderful.

I reckon we do need a change of location. Wales has been VERY good to us. Remarkably good to us in fact. But three years of sunny weather? I'm not sure it can actually happen. Mat's Friday change worked very well this year but otherwise, would it not have all felt a bit too similar to last year?

Nicely polished, thank you. I was going to buy new front discs but I don't think I'll need them now. That sort of treatment is quite good for brakes, use them or lose them.

I have a few suggestions for Scotland if anyone wanted to look at fields full of rusty shite...

Posted

To be fair I would quite happily travel back down to Wales for another shitefest but equally I'm sure that there are plenty of other locations that are as eye-lickingly suitable.

Be good to get some dates planned in advance.

Appropriately dedicated and enthusiastic.

I'm also happy to do the travelling 'cos it's a holiday to me. A camping trip in Scotland wouldn't do it for me as I'd be too tempted to go home of an evening. Besides Devil's Bridge is properly pretty, the hill climb course is spot on hoon territory and the fact I now know what the roads are like down that way, next year...if all goes well with the new upcoming job...I plan to buy and bring this:

If it's still up for grabs.

I'd come to Scotland, though possibly in something that isn't flat out at 70mph.

Well, a bus would make the weather less of a worry. Please fit a wood-burning stove.

Shitefest Euro-roadtrip? It has been mentioned before, but it'll have to happen one of these years...

Posted

As much as I like the idea, Scotland would just be too far for me for a few days. Yorkshire could be done as could Devon/Wiltshire again.

Scoto roadtrip shite then. No passport or funny money needed, have a week long tour. Might need to splash out and find some accommodation with actual showers though perhaps...

I'd be willing to travel. Looking to get a towbar on the xsara so can drag a small van or pop top around.

I managed 75 mph on the way back but mostly kept to 70. It was gr8 fun...

But maybe next time I'll bring something big and square that tops out at 80 mph...

Took me 9 hours on Friday to get to Wales, and 8 back yesterday, so what's a few more between friends.  Last time I was in Scotland I left London at 4am and was in Edinburgh by lunchtime.  My mistake on Friday was not doing the same.
