My attendance is looking doubtful. The V70 is resisting all attempts to make its alternator work and I can't really bugger off for the weekend in the only working car we have. If I don't have it fixed by the start of the week I'll have to be out.

Looking at my route and don't really fancy doing spaghetti junction on Friday afternoon. Anyone know what the A44 / A49 from Worcester to Shrewsbury is like?? or can you suggest a better alternative that avoids the M5 / M6 nightmare.. Will be in the Saab so overtaking opportunities will be available....

On a Friday afternoon the A49 will just be a series of overtaking manoeuvres...probably almost as stressful as the M6! Been 10 years+ since I did the A44 so can't remember too much, but I think it was a good driving road. When we lived in Gloucester we used to visit North Wales quite a bit, so would either take the B roads through Newent/Dymock/Hope under Dinmore to the A49, or the A442/A458 through Kidderminster/Bridgenorth. Depends what time you'll hit Kidderminster...

head for kington then a483 to oswestry then b road to llangollen

They are both fine if you don't mind trundling along at 45/50mph enjoying the view (I prefer this to busy motorway). What I'm going to do is turn right just after Craven Arms onto the A489 and follow that up to Shrewsbury as it's twisty and has less 30 limits.

 

I would agree with Hairnet if he hadn't mentioned Hereford. It is fucking awful at rush hour and will add around an hour if you're lucky. The locals joke that its the only city without a bypass by royal charter. If you want to do that either make a massive detour west to avoid it or join the Gloucester to Leominster road on the other side.

Im collecting a Ford from Dagenham en route so approaching from birmingham direction. May join the sloth convoy but mainly will try and avoid big cities (impossible for the first 2/3rds of the way)

The V70 has the correct number of volts. I replaced the regulator/brushes, rectifier and slipring to no avail. It turned out that the regulator mounting screw that went missing was actually quite important, luckily I spotted it lying on the drive this morning.
