I haz purchased a Golof.

Could be worse, my 1.0 MK2F Polo with a 4 speed had a mind blowing 45bhp (when it was new 20 years before I bought it).

If I remember correctly, you could get the same engine in the mk 2 golf. That must have been real ball of fire...

A mate of mine has one on an L plate in Povo spec which is now on 350000 miles and it's still going strong on the original lump and he's done everything he can to kill it off but to no avail.

It needed a new clutch a year or so ago and he put a lovely big crack in his gearbox by dropping it on the floor but he managed to glue it back together with some Micky Metal and it's still running so the Mk3 can't be all bad.

I've had a mk3 with the 1.8 engine and have to admit it was a bloody slow old bus but it never let me down and never went wrong and was totally rust free at 16 years old but it was a cabriolet so had most probably had an easier life.

If that was my car the first thing I would do is undo the front wing liners and clear out all the old leaves from the rear of the wings as it's what causes rust problems on a MK3

I mean my 12v corsa has I think 59 bhp from 3 banger 1.0 and it's only a few years newer. I thought the 1.4 was about 75bhp. Oh well. Not many base spec ones knocking about now. Thinking about it didn't the tdi mk3 cl trim have all electric windows etc in at and the petrol model didn't? Bit like the ford escort mk4 gl. The diesel had chrome round windows, electric windows etc but the petrol model didn't?

How on earth does a sensor failure take out the flywheel?

Apparently the thing kangarood down the road for a few hundred yards, power cutting in and out a bit before going into limp. Five years old I think and under 100k, it's a story I heard from my Audi speshlist. He couldn't see why else the dmf had suddenly gone.

My ex-Sporty GTI was fine, averaged 40mpg along decent single carriageways to work, all the toys worked with the ubiquitous exception of the window regulator au fromage. It was fast enough for everyday use, comfy, decent boot, parts were in every scrapyard. It was only rust that killed it.

Well having got it home and checked it out it is actually a CL but i cant for the life of me work out what the C is for...........

Nige the Pride was REALLY ROTTEN .......

Central Locking. At least that what it seemed to be on my 1.9D Polio.....

I don't mind Rolfs much. The Mark 11 was a bit* overrated really and the Mark 3...

My Ma had three of them, all used of course. We used to buy cars from auction when auctions were cheap, run them for a year and sell them on for what they cost. First off in 1994 came a K reg 1.8GL in Oldfart maroon that was so utterly dire it needed a remap just to get it to go properly and a Koni suspension kit. It rattled a bit but it was a year old. Next came a white J reg GTI 3 door I bought from Blackbushe City Limits car auction in 1995. One previous owner, Toyah Wilcox (I shit you not). It had a small rust scab ion a rear quarter than became a massive festering sore over 2 months and I had to paint the back wing. It had a noise in 4th gear and generally felt cheap and nasty. However it went well, handled okay and was quite likeable despite the VAG shitness.

Lastly a 1994 VR6 3 door Auto in black, M reg. It was 3 years old and was mega cheap because no bugger wanted it. Full black leather, the BBS style 'loys and all. It looked well and drove so nicely. The auto suited the 2.8 6 pot and it was a pleasant turd but it drank fuel like a 2200 Princess. It would have been even better if VAG hadn't built it - the usual rattles, squeaks and stuff.

That got sold and a new Skoder Octavier dieseasel ordered. Whilst it was on the way I went down to Nutbushe Auctions and picked up an L plate Audi 80 2.0E, three or four years old, 100'000 miles and a car of a quality that was so far ahead of the VW shit. Not a squeak or rattle, seats still nice and firm, no rust and once mopped it shone like a new sixpence up a sheep's arsehole. We got a letter from trading standards six months after we sold it asking us to verify the mileage of 38'000. Cheeky bastard who clocked it but it would have passed the 38'000 mile challenge.

Mark 3's are interesting now but when new, they were the most cynical heap of shit.

I like it.

There's always lots of 'MODENVAGSIZSHITE' stuff on here. I've had plenty of Golf III, IV, V, VI, Polos and a Scirocco as my 'modern daily'.

Never fitted a roof rack full of old suitcases.

Never had a problem*.

Used to spend a lot of time in Mk3 1.9 diesel vans - we ran four, plus a Mk2 1.6D van. Pretty hard to kill, though we only had two road registered examples, both 1.9TDs I think - P59 XUF and R212 JPN - the rest were airside only and had even harder lifes with 90% of all journeys on a cold engine. Between October and March they never got switched off.

It is a measure of my love of them that when were allocated runabouts I opted for a K-reg Astra 1.7D Merit estate with 230k on the clock and no stereo. The Golfs were hopeless and the other lads fought over the Mk2 van.

I think that 40 odd BHP 1 litre was still used in the mk3 Polio, my sister had an R reg one that broke down on the test drive and was no better afterwards. Regualarly failed to start and had incurable misfire so was chopped in for a Hyundai Accent which developed a  worrying sounding bottom end knock and was regularly run until the oil pressure light came on (no doubt the two were related). Seemed quick enough though, even though it was absolutely bog spec I had quite a soft spot for it (the Polo). The Hyundai amazingly lived on for years despite the abuse, I suspect both are bean cans now though.

Same seat fabric as an injection spec Skoda Favorit LXi. Mine has the same pattern. 60bhp is less than the 1.3 ohv Skoda lump, my little heap has 67, and is a lighter car, and at times even that struggles on hills

broke down on the test drive and was no better afterwards.

It broke down on the test drive but you bought it anyway? You're a braver man than I.

Nah it was my sister's car, she couldn't be bothered to look at anything else so it would have had to have spontaneously combusted for her not to buy it.

I put a 1.4 ABD in this.

60 bhp matched with the original 5 speed gearbox for the 1l made it quite nice to drive. The torque was excellent meaning I could drive up hills without dropping to 2nd.

I can imagine it's not as good in the heavier golf but it was great fun in a Polo.

Not that it matters a jot, but I reckon that started out life with Europcar.

Back in 'long time ago' place I worked bought a fuck load of Golf CLs from Europcar, all of them has reg numbers ended HKJ. Quite I have retained this information for nearly twenty years is a mystery though.

You are absolutely correct first owner europcar uk milton keynes..... It was then owned by the same family until 6 months ago when the garage i bought it from took it in part exchange and failed to sell it, probably because they were asking too much for it. A friend of mine knew i was looking and put me onto it.

I had one of these utterly dreary things once. it also had the 1.4 4sp.

I bought it off egay for £100 as I needed a car the next day and it was the cheapest thing local to me, I couldn't believe it when I went to collect it and it only had 4 gears, I hadn't even considered that a 1993 car would have a 4spd box. It got me out of a jam but was the dullest most dismal thing I've ever owned but when it ate it's clutch a couple of months later I got £10 more than I paid for it from the scrapper, which was nice.

That's exactly what they never were. They always were overpriced dangerously flimsy tosh with neither handling nor brakes

and had loads of cheap rubbish in them that broke a lot and was expensive to replace.

At least they aren't Vauxhalls though, so I guess all is well.

But in many cases, the Astra was the better car.

This is my 1997 GTi 16v which I have owned for almost three years now.

Much better than the naysayers would have you believe. However I will be sacking it off shortly as too modern for me - my Manta has replaced it as the daily!

I find VW's to be 'solid' in the same way a boulder or a tree is solid. Everything is made out of the hard plastic known to man, even the seats.

Not a fan of any VW, I'd have a diesel to chugg around in though.

Aye, the late 'valvers weren't bad. The Mark 4 was a better made car again but the 5 wasn't as good and many are going rusty now.

That is mind-numbingly dull and nothing says 'I haven't made it' more than when you tragically buy a premium brand with everything nice stripped off it to cut costs. Almost as bad as a mid-90's base spec 3-series BMW - gutless, uncomfortable and grey inside, and absolutely nothing present that makes a BMW nice. You realise this model is only present in society because the manufacturer wanted to be able to advertise it as 'from £9999' or some other stupid ball-licking price that you couldn't actually buy it for. I like the fact that almost nobody here has a good word to say about it either. How does that make you feel about it?

That said, it's not like any of us actually drive anything nice, so we're not exactly in any kind of position to take the piss :D

well, define "nice"

i think that my Rover 75, Jaguar XJ-R, Mini and Metro are all nice in their own way, even if they are all old and for the most part worth next to bugger all, and none of them have a Waffen SS Panzer Kampf Achtun Aggressor Squadron badge on the front.

This is exactly why i like it because it makes everyone else feel better.... Well that and the fact it was cheap, oh and no sunroof so no usual rust problems, nothing is electric so no usual VW electric problems and being a 1.4 its cheap to tax too. Oh and fully comp insurance for under £150.

If when i drive it i "click" with it i will sort out all its little "issues" if not i will sell it or break it for more than i paid for it. Either way its win  win....

I actually like povo spec cars like this because there is less to go wrong. And what's more should you want to jazz it up there are plenty of better spec models in yards who are only too happy to donate their better spec seats and wheels. Remember the Golf Match? Pov spec mechanicals with a GTi style interior, all of the show and none of the insurance......WCPGW?

I flippin love mk3 golfs, they are gr8 for daily duties, I miss my old one, Sold it to my mate who has left it sat for 8 months on his drive slowly filling with water.
