Heavy Breathers

Evening folks.

I went to view a motor today, a 20 year old 2.2 turbo diesel (guess the car!), showing a believable 58,000 miles. I loved it, felt nice on a run around the block, even Mrs_KJ has given it a "possible definite maybe".

BUT

with the engine running I took off the oil filler cap, and it was blowing oily smoke in my face. Quite a lot.

I took out the dipstick, and put my finger over the pipe, and there was a tiny bit of pressurisation there too, not much, barely perceptible and not enough to lift the dipstick.

So... Is it terminally borked, a simple blocked pipe somewhere, or is it nothing at all to worry about?

Cheers!

Might be worth checking the crankcase breather. with such low miles there may have been a lot of short journeys that can block it up after a while.

My random guess is a grey import toyota previa, the exotic sounding mid engined rear driver.

Doesn't sound too chronic, probably a blocked pipe or mesh element in the breather system I reckon

Laguna 2.2 diseasel was out in 1995. Mate had one as a taxi. NOM NOM'd the cam. Nearly 400 bills for a new cam, in 1998. Gearbox leaked like the Torrey Canyon as well.

Ha ha I wish, Mr Peel!

Thanks for the input gents, I'm gonna spleep on this descision I reckon. Really nice old bearded Bangladeshi seller too :)

BJM - right first time!

..except it's an AWD one!

It's not exactly a "Previa", it's an Estima Lucida Charme Pleasure Wagon. With that "hopeless Toyota" 2.2.

I know this lump's reputation, but I really have my heart set on one :)

Just buy it. Anything with that many superlatives in its name and a reflection of aspirational* semi detached houses in a photo of such name is a guaranteed winner that will never go wrong

I had one of those, although it was an Estima Enema rather than a Passion Wagon.  It wasn't that bad really - I never had any overheating issues with it, it went adequately well for what it was (I once had an indicated 101mph out of it on the A11), was comfy and the 4wd was useful.  Wasn't that great on diesel though.

Back when I was a lad you simply extended the breather with a suitable length of hosepipe to under the car. No more oily smoke smells and the floor rusts slightly more slowly.

My SD1 vitesse had a suitable length of garden hose from the flametrap straight under the engine.

A bit of investigation revealed that the breather system just needed cleaning.

An ex work colleague had a mk 3 essy that would blow the dipstick out of its tube. He drove it like this for years - because he was tighter than a submarine hatch.

My sis had an Estima for about 7 years, 2.2 td and it tolerated pretty sporadic maintenance ok, I can't remember much ever going wrong with it apart from the drinks cooler stopped working. They excell as motorway cruisers, very comfortable to ride in and not at all van like. There is a dash light that comes on when the turbo is working hard, if you can keep it off, mpg is not too bad.

Hers had electric curtains, column change, seats fold into a bed, built in cool box etc. There's a lot to like about them.

I don't expect to be putting much diesel in it :D

a bit of oily smoke... [vid]

Scary. That had been over-filled with oil though. It may be easy to do because there are two engine oil filler points, the main one is a tank under the bonnet, and the dipstick is under the front seat.

I'm feeling like I want to go for this.

But SRSLY...

with engine running... blowing oily smoke from the rocker cover cap. Quite a lot.

What's the absolute worse case scenario please?

SCRAP IT!

Buy it, bodge it, get bored of it and then flog it in Golders Green for MASSIVE profit.

These grey imports have some epic model/ trim names, thats a superb one. One wonders what options differenciate the 'pleasure wagon' over models in the range.

It sounds like something Hugh Hefner would have commissioned.

I forgot to tell you its "Joyful Canopy" tag!

It's a Toyota Estima Lucida X 4WD Charme Pleasure Wagon Joyful Canopy.

The Joyful Canopy (or J-Top) is the extra-high roof with two big smoked glass sunroofs.

I'm not sure what the Charme Pleasure Wagon bit means, other than the fact it's a car for winners.

Inside, it looks much like any other Lucida X, with dual zone a/c, seating for eight on tweed-effect velour, curtains all 'round, but no built-in fridge. Slumming it.

I do have my heart set on one of these, this may be the one. Further inquiries shall be made come the morn.
