Price of a gallon

Like others on here, the thoughts of a guzzler become more palatable with the current cost of fuel and the fact that my commute is 50% less than it was now I have changed jobs.

An audi s4 is a real possibility - however I have been informed that I may be the first person to own one who is'nt a tosser. I can assure you that if I did take the plunge I would still be true to my autoshite roots - my wife can still keep her rattle canned fiesta.

Any body else planning to hand even more money to the exchequer and buying something juicy before things go a bit mad max?

That's exactly why I've just bought a ridiculous Volvo. If I could have afforded it I'd have had a V8 P6 or a Crown Vic or something equally daft.

the x300 xjr is bg, daft and fast (plus thirsty) so if gas stays at the current level into the summer then i'll be running about in that this year, so the thief in chief will be getting more pez tax out of me.

there isnt an aldi that i would want to own, but a crown vic, or any rover v8 (p5, p6, sd1 or a 75) now that would be most agreeable, if either i had somewhere to keep it or the pennies to actually buy one

I like the s4 because it has a big engine in a medium sized car, also it is a bit of a Q car because only the twin exhausts give the game away.

Personally I couldn't give a toss what petrol costs, I'll only have big or bigish cars. Life's too short to drive small economical shit. Plus I'm not a fan of small cars anyway.

I wouldn't call the Audi A/S4 a big car anyway. The 6 is getting there but the 8 is the one to get if Audis are your thing.

I've just got back from a frip to Austria in my 300 TDi Disco, and was pleasantly surprised to see that diesel was priced at just 98 euro cents (73p) per litre in Luxembourg on the way out :-D

Prices in Innsbruck ranged from €1.06 (79p) to €1.10 (82p), and that combined with the strong pound against the euro made for a very cheap trip.

Diesel had risen to an extortionate €1.025 (76p) per litre in Luxembourg on the way back, grump grump. lol.

I filled up the 2CV this afternoon. It cost me just over £18. Good times! Sadly my meagre income means that lower fuel prices just means my pair of economy class winnahs just cost me a little less each month.

I did buy a guzzler, had a petrol Landcruiser a week, will decide in the summer whether to keep it long term in which case i'll gas it or plan on a couple of years in which case it can stay petrol,  3.4 V6 sounds wondrous and there's a valve in the centre silencer which opens up making it near enough straight through when you give it some welly so open the bugger is often.

The beauty about guzzlers is that if petrol prices go sky high again you can always gas the bloody things, well most of them, but that means you have to keep it for at least 5 years to make the expense worth it.

I've just spent a couple of hours cleaning The Management's Gaylander ,in preparation for sale. The replacement will be V8 and petrol powered. Whether from Solihull, Zuffenhausen or Spartanburg ,depends how brave I'm feeling .

I have been wiling away the evenings with the idea of chopping the sensible diesel daily in for something more appropriate for continental slogs. My Ebay searches have gone from Middlebridge Scimitar, to 8 series BMW, to SL55 via SL500, to XJS, to XK8, to DB7, then DB9, 350Z, back to SL Mercs. What I really want is that pale yellow BMW Z3M breadvan that was on sale in Germany a few weeks ago.

Then I glance out of the window and remember the 40mpg comfy reliable diesel that dispatches the 8 hour slogs without a fuel stop.

I'm going to just imagine the misery of an interest rate increase, and just keep fixing the Jag for those V12 moments, and rag the ass of the Seicento for fun.

I understand the temptation though

I worked in Oman for a few weeks last year, where pez is less than 20p a litre.  Despite this, most people still drive dreary Japanese/Korean saloons, though nobody suffers the indignity of diesel power.  I was tooling about in a Renault Duster which was so super-economical, it cost me spare change to run.  The roads are utter chaos though, there's no fun to be had and the UK is bliss in comparison.

Also spotted a new Renault Safrane - 'cept it's actually a rebadged Samsung SM5, which in turn is based on a Nissan:

When I bought my house, my commute halved as well, that's why I got my V6 Alfa 156, I didn't care as the fuel costs weren't bad doing less than 30 miles a day. Only kept it for a year, spent almost nothing, sold it for a small profit. Well worth it.

Go for it while you can I say, lifes too short. I'm considering another guzzler again myself in a few months.

You obviously haven't been here for a while.

On a different note, do you all remember how we were constantly told that prices have to be raised because expensive petrol?

Now I really wonder why they don't go down because of cheap. Weird, eh?

I'd love an Amazon but she thinks they're too big, perhaps if I could get her to try one- although that would probably just confirm how big they are!

Actually, I've owned my fair share of gas guzzlers. I certainly don't have any regrets, though the 15mpg Landy V8 didn't stay for long. Being a 25-year old cruising around in a Rover P6 V8 was certainly pretty cool. Best commuter vehicle ever. Back then, I earned enough not to worry about the thirst. Besides, the 2CV's economy made up for it.

Petrol was bound to get cheaper once I bought that 70mpg Insight. Forever behind the curve, me.

I rejoice at the current price of fuel, with a winter driving collection that averages 24 mpg.

However before I replace any of my less than economic cars with a Jensen Interceptor or Rolls Royce I remember that, I sure prices will rise again so how long have we got?

I got LPG in my rangie for 60p per litre yesterday

54.9p in Dundee yesterday. I'm quite tight, the low price makes me want to get something super frugal to see how much mileage I can wring out of a £.

I bought a 2000 Colorado with the 3.4 V6, it's quite shocking just how quick the thing is for its age,  in typical Toyota 4x4 fashion they've somehow kept the low engine speed lugging torque as well.

The later LC4/5 also comes, in lower numbers obviously, with a 4.0 litre V6 petrol and its pushing almost the same power and torque as the 4.7 V8 in the Amazon, being roughly half a ton lighter the performance figures wouldn't disgrace a sports car, might that be something to look at?....somewhat narrower and nimbler than the Amazon which to be fair is a bit of a beast for car parks and the like.

I went to work this morning at 05.30,passing my local petrol station petrol was £106.9 and diesel was £112.9. On returning this evening petrol was £109.9 and diesel £115.9.
