Shogun / Pajero

Hilux surf 2.4 is now a rare car, not only Hgf but they cracked heads for a hobby too. Shame as I rate them better than a Pajero. Surf with the 3.0 dizzler might be a better bet if you can find one.

The 3.0 engine isn't immune from head issues, I know of a Hilux Surf and a Hiace Regius that had porous heads.

Get yourself a disco. Yes they have their issues but parts are cheap enough and everyone and his dog knows someone who can work on one. Hell I'll sell you mine if you like........

Difficult one to choose when it comes to 4wd as you chioices are limited in comparison to a 5dr hatch for example and there's no clear cut winner. Defenders good for life down on the farm, land cruiser is good at either, they all seem heavy on juice and expensive to fix but I suppose you expect that. A lot of the old Discoveries I see seem to be rotten to fuck with smoky engines.

I think you need to be prepared to put the work in to enjoy Land Rover ownership. I really couldn't afford the upkeep on any of mine (90 V8, RRC VM and Disco Tdi) and they all tend to be fairly well used, so bits do wear out. My mate's 2.8 TD auto Delica does also need some looking after, but it doesn't seem to need anywhere near as much tinkering as it should do given the abuse the poor thing gets.

If you live anywhere near Hereford/Shropshire borders this place has a specialist 4X4 auction every Tuesday: http://www.brightwells.com/Vehicles/4x4/Default.aspx

Past results for last month are here, only 4 Shoguns which surprised me a bit: http://www.brightwells.com/Vehicles/4x4/PastResults.aspx

Has everything from minty 3 year old Range Rovers with 50k on the clock to shagged-out Defenders from the the Forestry Commission that look like they've done 20 laps of the oval in an unlimited bangers class.

Variety it does not lack!

Didn't see the post about the Disco.

Anyway, I've just won a Hilux:

Impulse purchase means I'll have to sell either the Astra or the XM (or both). Any takers, PM ME!

A couple of years ago I saw a Delica L300 4wd. Proper camper conversion. At the time I left my number and said if you ever sell let me know. He's just called me to say that it's popped the engine and I can have it for £500. I immediately thought of this thread as don't they share the same engine? He says it's a 2.8 td (it's a 1995 from memory) I thought they were 2.5. I have a 2.5d L300 van already and thought it would be good for spares etc.

He says it tries to fire but won't. And he heard a rattle before it failed. He says oil and water ok and no bubbling / mayonnaise in cap. I'm off to see it at weekend - thoughts ?

I think the heads are the same on the 2.5 and 2.8? I'm also sure the engines are a straight swap.

500 is worth it I think even with blown gasket.

Just drove the Hilux home and can confirm it is Highly Luxurious.

MPG isn't that great, heater is lukewarm, there's bits of trim missing and has a Blackpool illuminations stereo fitted. I think there's one bulb working behind the dashboard, also speedo doesn't work.

Probably other things, but was told the rear door doesn't open etc as well, and only the drivers windows works. It has a MOMO wooden steering wheel! It's actually quite nice, but wood ffs!

Hopefully all the trim bits are in the glove box, which is in the boot.

That's gotta be from a man who hasn't done a hg on one of those . What a cuntnugget of a job they are . Having to stand on a block all the time which ruins your back/ legs . Every single bolt seems to have at least 2 fucking brackets attached to it which don't line up on reassembly . Grrr

This ^^

I had to change the front seal on a 95 2.8 injetor pump,as it was letting air in and allowing all the fuel to return to the tank overnight

Easily a 12hr job to swap a £1 part as almost Everything has to be removed/moved and every bolt has a dual purpose bracket on it

Sharp edges galore and I ended up looking like I'd been arm wrestling with Edward ScisscorHands....
