Stupid modern Ka - random light

Posted this up on a ford forum, but thought I'd try here as well. Can be more truthful with my post too...

SWMBO's friend has a 2010 1.2 shitbox ka, and has had a new light come on recently

the one by the temp gague. Goes off with the dash with the keys out, but on permantly with the engine on. Manual says nothing about it, my obd reader doesnt show a fault either.

Checked the coolant, and after eventually finding a torch bright enough to shine through the fucking non seethrough coolant pipette-like bottle it was a tad too high, so after failing to find a radiator drain plug and using the vax with a bit of hose to whip a few cm out it's now bang level. Stupid light is still on. I took the battery off to half an hour too and it's still on

Any ideas anyone? I would set fire to it before anyone asks, but there's so little car it would burn itself out in 15 minutes and be a bit pointless!

Is the temp gauge working? Maybe it's telling you there's a fault with it?

Ah, so that means it's overheated in the past then? Missed that whilst looking at the paper copy. The guy on the cover looks like a dick...

Presume she's going to have to take it to ford and be bumraped to get it turned off? The coolant did look murky tbh, should I worry her with OMGHGF on a 20k 4 year old car?

Dunno, Beko. Do Ford still use that shitty-looking dark green coolant? That stuff always looks mucky TBH. I know the old pushrod Kas like to leak from the 'stat housing, but I don't know anything about that new engine at all.

You could phone an Ford dealer and ask them if it's an EOBD job, or if it's possibly a malfunctioning light.

Wait, what, that light shows that it's once overheated and will continue to signal that, even though the engine is working fine? Until you pay a dealer an hours labour to clear the light and wipe greasy fingerprints on your steering wheel?

I daredn't touch any fuses incase it monumentally shit itself in an expensive way! I did say to her just keep an eye on it, but she's one of those ones that would be standing there holding bits of the engine that just exploded out saying 'it was running fine'...

Unlike the old ones, these are a rehashed Fiat, built in the same factory as 500. They even have the same type of keys. I wouldn't be surprised if it has to go to a dealer to have it reset, I would wait until the next service though (if it's still done at a Ford franchise).

The next generation of Ka promises to be even shittier, it's a bargain basement made for Asia thing like the current Micra. Like that car, it will available as a 5dr only. No wonder people buy Picantos or Up!s instead.

I was just about to ask if that gen of Ka was just a rebodied 500 as the keys, 4 heater dials and dash shape, stalks and instrument panel look very 500-like, you've answered my question.

I reckon the way forward is simply to stop SWMBO telling her mates that you're any good with cars. Unless there's going to be some lezzing-up on the bonnet of the Ka as payment, and you have enough time to stick a new VHS-C in the camcorder, there's nothing but a headache in it for you!

Yeah, those instruments are pure FIAT, they look just like every small car they've made since 1999. It's deffo the overheat warning light,I have one in the same place.

It's probably shit wiring, I'd have guessed a lost connection to a temp sensor but maybe not if the gauge still works. I think the FIRE has two sensors though, one for the gauge and one for the starting of the car/emissions etc. (I'm sure these use the bog standard 1.2 FIRE).
