Well yesterday I offered my helping hand for a few jobs to sutty2006, when I got to his he said first things first we have to pick up a car and drop it to one of our mate gaz's for some welding work, so we went to get the trailer and I asked is this one you've bought, he told me yes but I'm not going to tell you what it is because you'll approve, he said when he saw it advertised he heard my voice in his head saying buy it, so we got to the car which was in our local area and what was looking at me but a sorry looking opel rekord E 2.2 that had been engine raped which is a crying shame but everything else is there, upon looking around it there's not that much grot at all, welding is needed on the rear quarter valance inner, the rear valance inner, a bit on the arch lip and there is a hole in the a pillar and scuttle by the windscreen, when I looked at the end 3 of the reg, the voice in my head started singing "I want my, i want my mtv, i want my i want my mtv" we pushed it onto the trailer, i bet you'd all love to see some pictures

Just look at those wheels

Class! Can you get another engine easily enough for it, and who the hell wanted the old one? It's almost criminal someone would do that, but at least it's been saved.

Posted

Good save. MTV is a Nottingham reg btw.

That must be the old Cam In Head engine (Mark 1 Cavalier type). Shouldn't be too hard to find one.

Posted

Yeah was a cih engine, Apparently the seller removed the engine to use in a Manta, we were talking about engines to use last night, the conversation went from a manta 1800ohc (there's one sat there that I donated minus the sump, pickup, cam pulley and dizzy I needed these for a c20xe conversion) or manta 2.0 cih engine, cav 2.0 ohc, an omega 2.2 16v and even the oddball.... Isuzu 1.7 td, we both reckoned that the only place this would've ended up if he didn't buy it is the oval covered in dulux

You might be able to get a 2.4 CiH engine from a Frontera. Or a 2.0 CiH Manta engine. a 1.8 OHC manta engine will be dead expensive. I say get a cheap omega and use whatever engine it has.

Posted

I should think most 2.2 Rekords and Carltons were engine raped for Mantas before the fashion or availability of 16v Cavalier engines was widespread.

Is the Frontera petrol engine the same? Must be plenty of those around.

Edited to add; sorry, didn't see Mr Bol's post.

I guess that would be an ex-military person's private import, as you couldn't buy these in the UK after late 1981 as part of a GM Europe brand rationalisation. Your Vauxhall/Opel dealer would only let you buy a Manta, Monza or Senator after then.

Good save! Is the Omega 2.2 engine basically the same block with a snazzy new 16v head or are they completely different?

Can you shoehorn a 3.0 V6 in?:)

Actually, although even I can't recommend them, you could probably lob a 2.3 diesel lump into it too, as fitted to some Mk2 Carltons, early Fronteras and some CFs.

Ah,but then you'd have to find one of those sexy little bulged bonnets.

Didn't realise Carlton's were still sold badged as Opels in UK this late, C reg being what 1986? thought the only Opel you could buy this late was the Manta.

Apart from being a 2.4 and the 2.2 being the biggest available for the Rekord originally, they are the same, yes.

I was thinking Frontera too, the only thing might be finding one - they were seemed common a few years ago around my way and pretty worthless too, maybe that's why there's not many about now.

Anything Manta will be ££££

I just checked Germany for you, but they are nuts!

They have a similar scene tax on everything Opel, as they have on everything Ford over here.

Try Leboncoin.

A big-block 2.4 Frontera engine would be an interesting way to go. Doesn't surprise me at all one of the Manta boys had the engine. They're quite keen on buggering Piazzas for their back axles, too - even if the full of pub-wisdom gobshite who bought an auto jumped on it too soon to realise it had an open diff! Bad luck, hipster boy.

I know where there's a 2.0-litre CIH, but it's attached to a Carlton that's currently on the road.

Could've originated Eire - they still have Opels not Vauxhalls.

A V6 should go in, a mate had a 2 litre auto of a similar era in the mid-90's and seem to recall the engine bay having a fair bit of room.

Great save, theyre cracking cars. like the thread title, almost pips Robt's Cavalier attitude

you do realise all Voxhalls are shite, don't you?

BMW straight 6? Petrol or diesel there must be plenty around but a lot of work. Lovely car, 80s crisp styling at its best IMO makes moderns look all bloated.

That's because they are.

Good save, there must be dozens of cheap Omegas you could whip a motor out of.  Do you know any banger boys?  I bet they'd have one, they seem to like putting Colognes or Zetecs in everything.

wow. Blast from the past this topic. A lot has gone on since.

Its taken me pretty much all year to collect the parts I needed. First was engine. Sourced from a friend in the manta club. A previous 2.2 carlton engine that had been fitted to manta. It cost me the back axle off my landy, which is good because its been replaced anyway.

It required new timing chain guides and a freshen up. sump was manta (wrong) aswell as engine mounts, flywheel, crank pulley. Sourced those from a friend in Crewe who was putting a carlton engine in a manta. Quite handy actually! The sump was rotten., had to get the pigeons out on that one.

plus two layers of hammerite sorted that out.

painted the tatty rocker cover (correct one) and hit the block with hammerite.

Needed a gearbox. I used a spare manta one I had gathering dust and rat shit up my unit. The remote at the back was too short. No one has one. Searched for months. Was given a modified one from Retropower. Measured up it was too long. Days before  I planned to shorten it I found a bloke up north selling a carlton box. A deal was done, I drove up and swapped my manta remote for his carlton one, and I bought the power steering pump he had too!! Bonus!!

Then came the clutch saga. Id managed to get a 2.2 flywheel (228mm) as appossed to the 2.0 one. (218mm). But then getting a clutch was a pain in the arse. I searched high and low. No motorfactors in my area could get one. I finally got a NOS clutch kit off the bloke I initially had the engine off! So the flywheel was refurbed and skimmed.

I drove this when me and sutty met at the pub this evening and it is a lovely drive, nice and smooth, the turning circle is fantastic and the seats are very comfortable, gets the thumbs up from me

Once ready, I got the trusty engine hoist out and put the engine and box in as one lump. The engine hoist had a heart attack but soon recovered.

That engine hoist is like an old friend, it's seen some action all the times I've borrowed it from you, it'll out live the both of us that will

I take my hat off to you all involved in this.  Really interesting car, rare, somehow dignified.  The kind of car you wouldn't notice and yet you'd think later - that was amazing, I haven't seen one in how long?
