LUXURY SHITE imminent (Tragic car for a tragic person)

Remember that Rover I spoke about in the other thread? I've only gone and bought the bloody thing. Collect it next week. Captain_Slow has a lot to answer for, because he showed me the advert in the first place.

If it looks like the boot isn't shut, that's because it's not.

I collect it next weekend, when the list of gripes I found will be looked at in more detail. They are:

On most settings the front offside headlight is making a funny "tick tick tick tick tick tick!" sound. I will upload a video later if YouTube lets me.

Drivers door will not open from the outside. This fault showed itself just before I made an offer.

All windows other than the driver's are sticking.

This dent:

Radio will only play WHITE NOISE FM - YOUR CHOICE FOR THE LATEST WHITE NOISE BANDS, NEWS AND FEATURES

Inners of the rear arches are going crispy, so I will stamp that out ASAP.

Boot leaks slightly (they all do that, Sir)

Good points are it drives GR9, doesen't leak, body work is straight (ish) and the engine and transmission feels smooth and strong (now I'm making it sound like Andrex).

Inside is GR9 also, clad with the finest peeled cow. I love it. It's me on four wheels. It has heated seats which still work, and shockingly, the aircon works too. Has a genuine 67k on the clock.

More crap pictures.

Sorry for the Scumtree photography...It was starting to rain. Stay tuned!

Crikey, that's lovely inside!

The headlight is likely to be the automatic adjuster having a missing tooth on the little pinion gear.

Looks like a great buy nonetheless.

Excellent.  Another good point is that the top of the dash doesn't look too curly.

In fine Rover tradition, that looks like a lovely place to sit while you're waiting for Green Flag*.

Thanks. The seats need a bloody good clean actually, the pictures flatter as they did on the advert. Other than that, it is lovely.

Thank you for the heads up on the lights. That's the biggest thing I need to sort before it can be driven.

Very nice. Interior looks lovely.

You going to fix the dent? It's a bit of a shame it's there. Great car though!

Thanks! Yes, it will be fixed in time. Firstly I will try tapping it out (Father Teds need to not apply) seem as I have nothing to loose. Wing is bolt off, so it will probably be getting a new one.

Bett0r Picz0rs please.

Never knew the Sterling was available with a 2.0-litre T-series. Assumed they were all KV6s by that stage.

Ooooh, very nice! Birmingham reg, nice spec - employee car?

Cheers! Looking at it's history, yes. That or it was demo or PR fleet car.

These are better than any of mine own. They flatter it big time though.

I'd run away from a KV6 screaming.

Thankfully, this seemed to be a popular colour for these. Don't know what it's called mind. For now I'm settling for Ken Barlow Blue.

Door will be the handle I reckon.

When you say the windows stick, do they need repeated stabbing of the switch to move? If so that's either a switch pack or fuse box issue.

I don't know how hardy the auto boxes are in these things (who made the auto box for the T series models?) but no doubt it's better than the manual at not whining. I had a freebie 820i years ago that had all these faults and more.

I think on an R plate that's a fairly early 2 litre Sterling because most I have seen have been T or V plate, but then again I read somewhere production actually ceased in 1998 in any case, so anything registered on an S or later will have sat in a compound for a while. A mate had a KV6 coupe on a W plate which was proper late plate madness.

Anyway, well done on buying something.

The auto box seems fine and was smoother than I was expecting. A bit slow witted on kickdown but what do you expect?

It's registered in 1998, no idea if it was actually built prior to that.

Thanks, it's taken a while but I've finally got my barge 8)

*swoon*

I am jealous. Yes I have a better, nicer and more useful car, but I'm still jealous.

Door handle - Basically it'll be the handle because Rover/cost cutting/cheap parts.

Arches - they shouldn't be corroded, just surface rust, a bit of a rub down, anti-rust treatment, some undercoat, top coat abd lacquer should get them looking good again. Also, if any body panels need replacing, I'd hold out for a correct coloured part, the colour on your (:() (lovely) Rover is a more common colour so it should be easier to find the correct part in the right colour saving costs on respraying.

Mats, whilst proper Rover ones don't look original, they should be in identical Blue colour as carpet, but at least there are some mats there. I am jealous.

The windows sticking/getting window to work by repeatedly stabbing at switch is down to the window switch pack. I had the same problem on my similarly aged KV6 Sterling. I simply changed the switchpack and had no problems since.

I really want to see this car at some point. If things work out, I may get the KV6 back on the road and we can have a STERLING FACE OFF.

Yo, Mo!

The arches aren't too bad at all and I'm probably making a mountain out of a molehill in reality. Point is I don't want to have a mountain. Thanks for the tips, this is going to be a very steep learning curve this car, so any help/advice is great!

The mats do have semi worn away Rover logos, making me think they're original. They're horrible and will be going in time though, they let the side down.

I find it odd how the driver's window is (touch wood) making me wonder if the other have jammed up due to lack of use? I've heard others say the switch pack could be at fault as well...we will see.

A STERLING FACE OFF would be great. Up for that :) You may get to see it at Solent Shiters this Feb is you're going?

You forget just how lovely the interiors are on these, always said my 827 which was a manual was one of the best cars i ever owned.

The interior on this looks like an affordable version of that found in the Rolls Royce Silver Spur.

Mats - I want them please if they are going, please also replace them with OE spec ones, otherwise I shall find you a set.

Window - The reason the switchpack is at fault is due to the crap soldering in pack itself, they start to wear and crack causing faults, a replacement of the switchpack solves that problem, all switchpacks from 1986 to 1999 are exactly the same, they are simply plug and play, but DON'T buy the Coupe switchpack as that only has 2 windows, yours has 4.

Also BE AWARE that any other electrical faults will be down to fusebox located behind under the steering wheel, behind the dash panel. Fusebox is easy, if a little fiddly to get to and very easy to solder, if your not confident with a solder (or just simply shit, like me) then a local electrical shop should be able to sort it for a couple of quid.

Solent Shiters - Not heard of this, what's the details, I'll see if I can afford it time/moneywise. My KV6 won't be on the road by then, that's for sure.

This past few months have been very strange for a lot of shiters, seeing themselves in cars they never really thought they'd see themselves in; Me in a W124 Merc estate, you in a Sterling, Vulgalour in a Corsa, Cort16 in a big Purple Merc. What next? PeteM in a Vectra? The SVM getting shot of thier Volvos?

WHAT IS HAPPENING.

It's okay, we're all just going through a bit of a mid-shite crisis.

Nice Rover there Partridge, nice colour and lovely interior, I bet its a lovely old waftmobile.

That looks lovely. These Sterlings are so nice inside. Did you abandon the idea of an XJ40? Or were you seduced by the charming Rover on route? :-D

Posted

Thanks for all the kind comments all, glad to see it's gone down well :-) I've not given up on an XJ40, but for my current situation this is probably a much smarter choice. It's no XJ, but it's no Corsa either :-P

Mo, many thanks, copied and pasted! Solent Shiters will be happening early next month at Portsdown Hill.
