Uncle Jimmy Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 No, I'd stay here in 2014, I can always go into my garage to be in 1974. pompei 1
AnthonyG Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 No, the seventies were pretty awful, perhaps the worse decade since the 1940s. I could be persuaded by 1964, even 1984, but not 1974.
londonm Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 In 2014 entertainment is full of talentless twats stealing a living. Not many well paid jobs.Large swathes of young people as thick as pigshit because they were given a "tick box" education.I was two years old in '74, so I could'nt comment, however my dad told me that he had to leave Ford at Halewood in 1974 and get a job at ICI in Widnes because they were always walking out. Not good.I left school in 1988, I remember the old salts in our local telling me how they had it better and would'nt like to be my age due to the lack of opportunities.I have to say, I had it better than the current young people and I would'nt want to be young now.'In 2014 entertainment is full of talentless twats stealing a living' Right, let's go back to 1974. 'Ooooooh, you are awful, but I do like you' 'Mmmmmmm Betty!' 'I'm free!'. And on top of that load of old cobblers, you had Derek Robinson wrecking the UK car industry.
AnthonyG Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Yeah, say what you like about Simon Cowell, but he ain't Jimmy Savile or Stuart Hall. Still the politicians were a more interesting bunch (google Jeremy Thorpe) - imagine Nick Clegg up on a conspiracy to murder charge!!! Some of them were possibly* in it for more than pure personal gain, and there were some actual differences between the parties, although they were all shit scared of the unions until Maggie came along and upset the apple cart.
purplebargeken Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 my dad told me that he had to leave Ford at Halewood in 1974 My dad worked at Halewood from 1963 to 1988. He worked in the Press Shop - General Foreman, Ken Roberts. The early and mid 70's were shite. I enjoyed the late 70's more as the music was starting to change, The Police, etc. Best era had to be the 80's for me.
forddeliveryboy Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 I'd choose '74, since 1986 was closer than it is today.
MrDuke Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Yeah, say what you like about Simon Cowell, but he ain't Jimmy Savile or Stuart Hall. Yet. (OMGLIBELetc) steve_earwig and Luckythirteen 2
Alan_Green Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Nostalgia has always been around, most people for decades have always looked on the past with rose-tinted specticals. Yeah, nostalgia's always been around but it's not as good as it used to be. Pete-M, Micrashed, alf892 and 2 others 5
rml2345 Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 ^ Nostalgia is rubbish these days. I'd rather have the nostalgia from 1974 when it was much better. In all honesty though, 2014 is much better as you can enjoy most of the decent stuff from the 70s without having to live through the crap bits again. And there's no Autoshite website in 1974. eddyramrod 1
Alan_Green Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Let's hope next year's nostalgia will be better*. (*Copyright: R. Burns, 1785) rml2345 1
Sudsprint Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 I've no idea why but I have always thought 'M' registration cars looked cool. Not sure that is a strong enough case for time travel though.
Doctormop Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 I spent all last night thinking how much better life was in 1974 (says he who was born in 1972) and this morning I got up at 6am, central heating timed to come on at 05.40 so house nice and warm, had a hot shower, instant but very edible porridge, started up my 11 year old Honda, it fired up first time as always, left it to defrost for its usual 8 minutes whilst I put on my gore tex work coat and boots, first one into work so half an hour on the web and thought to myself;1974, probably no central heating so up into freezing cold or get dressed under the bed clothes, cold cereal or faff about making actual porridge, try to persuade my 11 year old Morris 100 or HA Viva to start and still have no heat when I got to work let alone when I set off to arrive at work for half an hour reading Excahange and Mart or Daily Mirror. I'd be an unsoicable grumpy sod 40 years ago same as I am now so I might as well be a warm, well fed grumpy sod so its 2014 for me.
alf892 Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 1974? .............Good times. I was just awakening to the existence of pussy and too young to worry/know anything about the threat of nuclear bombs/strikes/fuel prices. I think the year in which you discover pussy is the beginning of your Golden Years and will always be remembered fondly. Mind you I am pretty shallow so my life has rarely been clouded by worries about anything political/state of world/wots it mean kind of stuff.
steve_earwig Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 1774. I could invent the internal combustion engine. And die of, well, just about anything. Luckythirteen and Magnificent Rustbucket 2
Luckythirteen Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 I'd like to go on a daytrip or two, to 1974, just for the view. But I doubt I'd want to stay. I don't think I'd fit in very well.
NorfolkNWeigh Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 I was only 10, but it seemed pretty crap to me power cuts , strikes, bombs fuel crisis etc . There never seemed to be any good news, and looking back the sexism, racism and casual attitude to violence in the home was quite shocking. The know your place culture that prevented people speaking out allowed the Saviles,Halls etc to abuse with impunity. The music was mostly shit- Osmonds,Bay City Rollers,Peters and fucking Lee, filled the charts and as for those Top of The Pops albums - 'not original artists' .The other thing that sticks in my mind is that cars were always dirty and anything over 5 years old was likely to have big holes or pop riveted repairs . As my dad pointed on looking at a FB Victor at a show, 'They were never this good when I did PDI's on the fuckers.' Doctormop 1
