Unless I missed it there is a glaring ommision. The General Post Office (which became Royal Mail) had GPO and three numbers on its vans and London Transport had _LT plus three numbers on their buses.

This is a good history too, the most comprehensive one I've seen in splitting identifiers into area. Breaks it down by year section and when the local county councils were all re-organised. The web site it used to be hosted on disappeared years ago, but thanks to 'the wayback machine' and me still having the address, I found it again...

Not so with LT; hence xYY registered Regents and DYE registered Routemasters.

 

Little known trivia; Glasgow Corporation vehicles (buses, vans, trucks, cars) were all apparantly registered in the FYS and SGD series.

Google search old London Buses and got to images and a fair proportion of those with pre-suffix registrations have LT in the number:

485CLT and LTF104 frinstance so there must have been something going on. I can remember seeing loads of them when I was a youngun.

I'm pretty sure that was just coincidence as LT happened to be a London reg. Most of the Routemasters were VLT, WLT or CLT but there wasn't a deliberate attempt to get LT marks. There were all sorts of others too: MXX was a big batch and most of the late RTs were OLD, and some others I can think of are CUL, DYE, HLW, HLX, KYY, LYF, LYR and NLE.
