How far from the UK have you seen a UK-registered car?

A few years back, I saw an M-reg series 3 Land Rover 109 outside a house in Manassas, Virginia.

Back in 1998 I saw a J reg Metro one one of the Greek islands. Not as far, but still a lot of driving!

52 plate ML class in Port Harcourt Nigeria.

I was told it is not uncommon for them to be stolen, put in a container and straight out to Nigeria.   I can believe it as the wife's uncle had about three of them nicked in the early 2000's.

My old K reg W124 is running round in Port Harcourt somewhere (legitimately in my case).   Furthest spot I can recall is a Hants registered Transit airside at Bermuda airport although there are plenty of UK plated Rolls, Bentleys and MGs running around stateside.   There was an ex Portsmouth City Atlantean in Toronto still wearing its "RV" plates.   I suppose Banger rallies must also be responsible for depositing UK plated chod around the world, too....

I've personally taken one as far as Odessa.

Still plenty further east to go..

In the states you see rollers and double deckers rolling with the original uk plates and the us plate somewhere else.

Good point.

My mate's Saab 900 was auctioned off in Gambia after the first Plymouth-Banjul shenanigans, and another team apparently left a very broken Rover 200 on its side in the Mali desert.

Saw an old double decker on British plates in Victoria, British Columbia.

I had dealings with a stolen motorcycle that was on Colorado plates - I assumed that they were the crappy novelty ones, until the rider told me he was from Denver, and partaking in a round the world trip. His bike was found nearby.

I welcomed the rider to Salford, and told him to get a good lock.

You can't get any further than where I live ! And it is not unknown to see U K plates driving about. Some tourists prefer to have their car with them.

And then there is my last employer....

There were some UK registered hotrods at Bonneville Speed Week last year. I did a double-take when I saw UK cars I recognised parked up at the casino in Wendover, but it's not that uncommon for Brits to take their cars out there and do a bit of a road trip. We'd made a trip of it too and went to a big hotrod show in Kentucky and were quite surprised at the number of UK registered MGs, like Mercmad pointed out; mainly Midgets, Healeys and Sprites which was also quite surprising, they really like the little ones. Some of them had valid tax discs as well!

If it's the original importer of the car maybe.

However petrolhead types in the US like using the no front plate law to put on something from their car's country of origin regardless of accuracy.

I once asked an American chap about the UK yellow 1974 numberplate on the front of his 1999 Range Rover, leading into suggesting at the very least a white plate, if not a prefix one.

He got rather uppity about the whole thing....

Ooo, a thick Yank getting somethng wrong & then being angry / defensive about it. Who'd a' thunk it?

I saw a 1968-69 G-registration Series IIA Land Rover on a driveway in Ogunquit, Maine in September 2012 :)

I saw a Smart car in Marrakesh, not the furthest, but it can't have been a pleasant journey.

I once saw a UK-plated JCB in Syria many years ago.

Not so far away but I have seen a couple of UK-plated cars out in Belgium with out of date tax discs. One was a rough looking S1 Jaguar XJ6 which tax had run out 7 years previously, this was in around 2005. It appeared on my street one day and disappeared a few days later. I wonder what happened to it.

Another one was a tidy-looking powder Blue Volvo 240 saloon in Liege. Spotted in 2009-ish. It had been out of tax for a couple of years, I was only visiting the area so didn't see whether it had moved or not.

Volksy once lent his Fiat 126 to a couple of rugby player lads who were both well over 6ft and they drove it to Greece. Sadly it got crashed into when they were over there (or so they say) and it was left where it stood and they got the plane home.

It may still be there now. It may never have been crashed into at all. I would not fancy driving back in it.

What about the opposite - what have you spotted that's furthest from its home?

I was in Geneva in March, and I spotted a Japanese plated '90s HiAce being driven by a mid-50s Japanese couple.

I saw these two in the Classic Car Museum Sarasota a few years back.

Which has been for sale since I first saw it in '07 - one for the "Ebay Bargains" thread...

Lennon must have been a bit of a Shiteist - he had a early Maxi which he had cubed after a crash and the last car he owned was a beige 300TD estate

Must have been inspiration for the song (sluggish but good economy) "Power To The People" :-P

I did a studio backlot tour in 1997 at Universal Studios Florida in a electric float with a Ford Cargo cab - in the "Scrapyard" section of the tour was 3 identical X reg Transits used in "101 Dalmatians" that had been shipped 4,000 miles just for close up scenes. :?

Nope - I think the sight of the Transits stunned me - that and one of the Camaro's from "cop and a half" is all I can remember :-(

Edit - Found a photo - probably the best thing about the film

I've seen UK registered cars in Scotland and on the Isle of Wight. Even in that London were some.
