I've just been offered this,

10409340_10201649319713903_2537182489385

For £160

From the pics it looks like a 96/N Reg and it's a tubo diesel. Apparently it's rather smoky and doesn't boost so will likely need another turbo. A quick scan of ebay has turned up a few second hand turbos for under £100. Does anyone know which turbo I need, how difficult it would be to fit and if I should even bother buying it?

It's taxed until the end of the month and mot'd until January...

A saloon!! The best looking one.

Veg friendly?

I would suspect a leak some where.

At that price i would get it bought, even if it does need a turbo, it's not the hardest thing to change (can be a bit of a shit, but not three spanners HBOL)

Posted

Are you taking the "P"?

no, seriously, look at the boot badge.

Yeah, that wasnt funny. Anyway, for £160 I wouldnt hesitate. Its a smart looker with a bit of MOT, so worth that easily even with running faults. These things are hardy so check the basics before jumping to the conclusion that the turbo is gone. Are the air filter and fuel filters clean? any of the boost hoses split?....stuff like that.

Worst case scenario, you could sell those wheels for a bit and weigh in the rest and have enough profit for fish suppers for the rest of the week.

Have you bought it yet?

£160 is near enough bridge money, plus the alloys, battery & cat, so you shoulldn't lose anything should it come to the worst

Posted

Get it bought.

I'll sort you out with a turbo and any spare parts, I have 2 306s for breaking and 3 XUD engines kicking about, and I think I have 4 spare turbos.

You can't go wrong!

^ Spirit of Autoshite - Convincing someone to buy a car they don't really require, then helping them keep it on the road. WINNER.

Got it yet ?

How about now ?

£160 and you have to ask if you should buy it?

It's a saloon, WITH A REAR WIPER! That's like Autoshite level 20 or something. I'm yet to achieve this level. Options are limited.

If you don't buy it I think Corsaviour should give you a lifetime ban,

306 Sedan!!! You need to do it, surely the wheels are worth about a ton on their own, this is a bargain.

Posted

Buy it and lend it to volksangyl for winter! He can replace the perished leakoff hoses, and post pics along the way so I can do mine...

Mine smokes like a bastard if I go past 4k, can be funny when used with meaning...

Posted

Unfortunately it doesn't come with the wheels but I've some old ford wheels I should be able to fit to it. I've always liked the look of the sedan, if It was either of the other types I wouldn't have considered it. I get paid on Tuesday so I'll get it bought by then...

Posted

I think I've got a spare set of 306 alloys/tyres kicking about here somewhere. If so I could probably lend you them if you're stuck.

Ford wheels have a different centre bore so peugeot wheels would be preferable. I'd be all over this for £160

Found out that my accelerator cable is held together with 3, maybe 4 strands, so had a look in the Haynes manual for the job, and found this:

Cheers, I should be having a look at it sometime this week. I've decided to take the Carlton off the road and use this in it's place. The Carlton still doesn't have a heater blower so will be useless in the winter as trying to clear the screen will be difficult.

Had a look today, it seemed quite good. It drove fine and there was a little bit of smoke, it was a lot better than I expected anyway. I'm going to take it home tomorrow so I'll update with pics etc...

Posted

Does it only smoke if you boot it in a higher gear than it should be as it climbs the power curve?

That's the only time mine smokes, that and if I boot it from cold. Made an Audi dissapear for a few seconds this morning pulling out of my road!

Posted

Yeah it smokes when you put the foot down but the owner was sitting next to me saying it didn't boost, I thought it felt ok but don't really know how it should feel...

Posted

Can't say mine pins me to my seat, even with a lighter car bolted onto it. After about 2.5k there is something, and forwardness is increased. Can hear it slightly too at the right revs with the window open.

Or boot it in second till the red line, can defiantly hear it then! Check the cambelts not the original though before doing that...

Posted

There should be definate increase in acceleration when the turbo kicks in, my old one certainly had that effect.

Black Smoke is usually a symptom of too little air(Oxygen). So I'd guess that the wastegate is failed in the open position, and not spinning the turbine wheel and therefore not compressing the incoming air, therefore not getting enough oxygen.

I can't remember, but is the actuator basically attached to the inlet compressor housing by a little flexi hose and moved by vacuum ?

Posted

WG actuator will apparently be internal on a KKK and external on a Garrett.

No idea on internal actuators but the external type (and indeed the wastegate valve inside the turbo if required) should respond to plusgas/wd40/wire brush type action.

oh the 306 td................I had a 3 door one many years back, had 190k miles on the clock then and pulled like a train. Car wouldn't start unless you knew the pin code, 4 digit code which had to be entered every time you wanted to start the car..............pain of my freaking life.
