...how bad are Jeep Cherokee 3.7 petrols, the slightly newer 2001 versions, to be exact?

(1 is Corsa B level (i.e the bench mark for GR8-ness) and 23.5 is Mk4 Golf  (i.e shit)

Do this diffs not explode on these. I think the 3.7 v6 is pretty tough its the v8 ones always seem to see in bits on ebay.

The parts are bum clenchingly expensive.

That's the weird bug eyed ones isn't it, not the old 'drawn with a set square' ones they've been peddling for years? I knew someone through the work who had one when it was about 2-3 years old and as someone who knew nothing about cars, even he could tell it was shit.

When are you picking it up? ;)

The newer ones, with the bug-eyed front and soft edges to the shape, are horrible, very nasty from 'those damn Germans stole all our money' period of Chrysler's (mis) fortunes - see also Chrysler Sebring/Jeep Compass/Dodge Nitro. All weapons-grade shite though.

The old two-box shape ones are great. The UK got them from about 1992 onwards to 2001, they started making them back in 1984 though, so very long lived in the States.

The very latest ones, which I have only seen on TV adverts, look very strange and rather angry - the traditional Jeep vertical grille is sort of still there, only with some horrible LED lights where the round Jeep headlights should be, like it's stolen them from a Citroen DS3 or something.

Very interesting thread, but I thought it was going to be about slightly inaccurate large scale model cars.    I R DISAPOINT

They are übershite.  Proceed bravely, preferably blindly too, ready for open-wallet surgery when flimsy bits (of which there are many) break.  I'd have a previous generation 4-litre long before I'd have one of the post-2001 models.

Aye, the newer one with round lights. I've sacked it off as a bad idea now, but cheers for the input.
