I want a disgusting V8 for £1500, tops. Advice please.

I love Jags as you know, but I'm the first to agree that they're crap in the cold light of day.

AWD X-Types are cool. Anyone keeps coming out with the same old "ITS JUST A FORD LOL" needs to have an entire Mondeo shoved up their arse, which has been cut into very small, sharp pieces.

The XJ-S/XJS was/is a grand tourer, it just looked weird. It was also a codpiece for balding, fat men who needed something to show off at their swinger's parties which came out too late and lived too long. Even if the latter cars are better.

The V12s were a bit useless because US anti smog rules meant it was strangled to comply with them.  but would be a cool toy to have. If fuel was free.

AJ-6 for the win.

I love the convertible, but the roofline of the 2+2 just looks wrong

£1500 Merc 450SE disgusting enough for ya?

No MOT, mind, but looks fuppin' ace. In Edinburgh, even though the top picture looks more like Bucharest.

Lovely that, but these are designed to consume fuel first then carry passengers second

The XJ-S is an aging supermodel. Stunning when younger, but after a few owners the interior's been hammered about, the undercarriage is hanging off and it's owner is usually some 70's relic type bloke who thinks hairy chests and Brut aftershave are still the in thing.

You could also find pictures of it in it's heyday and J. Arthur yourself into a frenzy.

The looks have aged incredibly well though

Ypu can put it up on bricks outside your house a la James Hunt when the fuel bills get too much.

Or you can pretend you are Jean Reno in ronin - hang out of it with a length of downspout over your shoulder.

Most definitely. I'll have a yellow, pre-HE V12, please.

XJS was most beautiful right at the end of its life. In convertible form.

I like Series 1 E-Types very much. Even the 2+2. Their values make no sense though. After that, ugly.

Re: E-Types.

I think they're fit. But in true underdog loving fashion, my favourite would be a series 3 V12 2+2. I just like them. Will never own one, though, their astronomical values have made sure of that.

Not sure if HE or not, but if you don't find that attractive your eyes don't work.

Pre-HE, but only just. These very late Pre-HE V12s had an improved fuel injection and 300 Bhp. They were a very fast car in their day, but with an incredible thirst. I love them though; they have a purity of line.

I had a pre-HE XJ-S V12.

It was thirstier than George Best after a week in Saudi Arabia, and it rusted faster than a 1970s Fiat in the Dead Sea.

Had to grin when driving it, though (so long as I didn't look at the fuel gauge dropping).

I also think that the pre-H.E on those Kent alloys was the best looking of the XJS line.

Pre H.E was available as a manual for a while, too. They must have gone well.

The Mays heads on the H.E. made them worse on fuel around town and only slightly better on a run. Always found it quite amusing that Jag put High Efficiency badges on the less economical ones.

I had an XJ-S like that one, it was W registration and on those wheels.

It was very rare in that it didn't leak water and didn't have any rust either.  Obviously the aircon didn't work, the wipers were flaky and nobody had changed the spark plug under the aircon compressor since 1982, but it was enormous fun.  I was about 26 or 27 when I owned it, which was a good fit I think.

Yes, it did 10mpg (12 if you were careful) but it was very comfortable and quick enough.  At the time, the mid 1990s, there still weren't many cars that had over 300bhp.  Nowadays if your car doesn't have 500+bhp you're a bit of a wimp.

I had a friend at school whose dad had an XJS V12 with the HE engine. It was insured for my schoolfriend to drive, so in the summer after we did our A levels we decided a drive to Llandudno in it would be a good idea.

Unfortunately, the damn thing used so much petrol getting there we couldn't actually afford to do anything when we arrived, so we just walked up and down the front a couple of times, then came home.

I believe the car used in return of the saint was a manual.

Apparently it still exists.
