Are they any good or are they on a par with french ones?

 

Looking at a golf on ebay -T plate with 41k. However, it is a 1.6 pez in white, so about as desirable as a bout of ebola.

 

Opinions? I am well aware that if the box shits itself the car will be turned into white goods.

I ran an R reg Golf Cabriolet 2L auto till a few months ago. It had lurching problems when cold, 1st would engage-it would lurch forward and disengage and was told by the local VW oracle  Ã¢â‚¬Å“they all tend to do that† and  Ã¢â‚¬Å“sealed for life gearbox oil and strainer needs to be changed costing £275†which made no difference.  When not sitting in traffic with a cold gearbox it was a good long mile munching armchair.   The autobox has some electrical gearchanging bits and control electronics so is difficult/impossible/expensive finding someone with right the skills and equipment who doesnt say "that'll be ten billionor your earth pounds sir"

BDA Reman will refettle your box of electronic tricks....last one we had done was circa £90.

That "sealed for life" gearbox horseshit is the biggest drivel I've ever heard.

They tried to tell me that, too, and I'm having none of it, because I don't pull up my trousers with pliers.

They have two drain plugs, one for the box itself, and another one for the differential.

Release oil from both plugs, refill via dipstick tube, ten minutes max.

Know not a lot about VAG auto boxes, all I know is that PSA mechanical ZF automatic boxes in the 80s and 90s were pretty robust (I've had loads of Peugeots with them); the computerised ones which followed in the late 90s were more fragile and certainly needed an oil change now and again.

My only personal experience with VW group motors with auto boxes is the ZF unit in my MAN lorry, which is shit, it hasn't broken as yet but its as much use as a chocolate fuggin teapot, same box goes in DAF and Iveco, and its shit in them too.

 

My fiends retaliations and neighbours who have had Audi autos over the years have all regretted the bastards because they've all shat or farted themselves at some point, and being made of unobtranium, have cost ludicrous amounts to fix.

 

Buggered if i know if VW boxes are on a par, but i'd run a bloody mile.

My ex had one in her 2001 beetle which started misbehaving at around 100000 miles ( has trouble going into top gear) she was told it was a sensor issue (I think she means the multitronic unit) and basically it will cost around £1300 in parts and labour to fix.

 

So if it's playing up don't buy. But my father has an Auto golf V5 and the box in that is really nice and smooth but his car has done only half the miles plus the previous owner of the car preferred preventative maintenance so it had the oil changed at 40000.

An automatic gearbox in anything less than a V-8 is a recipe for frustration, IMO, as so much of the engine's oomph is soaked up.  Even my old 528i would have been miles better with a manual transmission.  I've only ever had cars with ZF automatic 'boxes (by chance, not as a policy decision), and they've been reliable, in my experience.  The only auto I have at the moment is the Range Rover, which is on 160,000 miles and the (ZF) auto is in perfect working order*.  

 

 

*It'll explode in pieces now I've said that.

My wife has a 1.6 tdi dsg touran  and its fine  on motorways will go as fast as anybody sensible wants to go and accelerates well 

 

the only downside is when driving around town stop start type driving  its jerky and when you put you foot down to pull out of a junction or onto a roundabout  doesnt allways move straight away  

 

 

Ive had other Vw's and Audi autos and they have been fine

The car in question is 1999 on a T plate.

 

41 k with full history, however it is a 1.6 SE - no aircon, no alloys and white paint.

 

Car has no tax and two months MOT but looks to be in excellent condition.

 

Offered on ebay for £1090 ( a lot for a 15 year old, petrol engined, giffer spec golf).

 

My offer of £850 was rejected even though I thought it was generous.

Don't. I've seen lots of dead auto Golfs.

 

DSG is brilliant (provided the oil is changed every 40k) but the auto box in normal Golfs is dire.

 

Focus auto box is also shit.

I've only had automatic Audis, 100cd, 200turbo, both shat their boxes.

Had 200t repaired by a local specialist who told me it was practically the same as a Maestro

It shat itself again soon after the repair

Words were had.

There's a fighting chance you know my views on VW/VAG stuff. I'm itching to say something bad about their autoboxes, but have to confess I've not heard bad things about them.Everything else is still shit though.
