Look what the cat dragged in - Dacia Shifterossa!!!!

That dash is remarkable for something that's only 20 years old, even my 40 year old Cortina has a more modern looking dash than that!

This is most excellent but after such hard to work to fix it all I would be too scared to drive it in case some dick drove into it.

There's dicks everyone, had one reverse his brand new BMW X6 (had 12 miles on the clock) straight into one of my old cars but such is life.......I'm hoping over the next few months to make some serious progress but who knows.

Ace - I look forward to seeing your progress.

If you do a full resto will you try and get the decals remade? They must be pretty much unique.

This cannot be beaten in Autoshite top trumps, can it?

Unless anyone has a RWD Tagora Coupe in beige powered by a Maserati engine?

I am insanely jealous! Piece of ply cut to size and that load bay will be fine...

I've taken pictures of the decals from all angles and will take some more, the idea is to make some new ones and put them on once the body has been put right.

I don't know if the MOT man will be very happy with just a piece of ply :-)

So you going for a restoration to standard form with this then? I'm all for that like, it looks pretty cool as it is and is soo rare!

I left the forum unnattended for three days and THIS HAPPENS.

Christ knows what shit would have gone down if I left it for a week. That bloody Horsey Horseless would have shown up.

Well done Rmx. You have just won THE ENTIRE EXISTENCE OF MANKIND.

Yep, rear wheel drive

Oo - so what engine/gearbox combo do they use? Is it the old Renault 12 (or maybe 18?) motor mated up to some other gearbox or something else entirely?

EDIT - just saw the RR thread - it's the old R12 engine.

I was going to ask similar. Live axle or independent? Perhaps it's leftover stuff from the R4 4WD models or a 4wd Trafic or something?

Taxed worse etc.

Do keep us up to date on the weldathon.

Were all 7000 miles covered on a farm, with sheep in the front and acid in the back?

Posted

Acid seems to have been a key player here ha ha

Well I was toying with the idea about playing with its looks, lowered and fat alloys plus spot light at the top....but since it may well be the only one on the road, I think a full restoration to its original spec would probably be most appreciated. There will be a few minor alterations but certainly nothing major.

ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!

After circa 18 years of it not running, we managed to get the Shifter's engine going. Too bad I can't upload the video or is there a way to upload videos on here?

Well done that man.  Most important job out the way!  Now, have you considered which welding supplies company you're buying shares in first?

I'd love to take the credit for this however it was my dad that did 99.9% of the work, but then again he knows his way around them, he even had me hot wire it as the ignition switch was buggered........loved that part :-)

So, I've spent the last couple of week trying to source some parts whilst out in Romania. I've managed to finally track down a brand new set of headlights, new taillights, new inner wings and various gaskets and other bits and pieces. Since the engine is running, and very good compression in all cylinders, verified via compression testing each of them, I am now at the stage of looking to take the engine and box out and start on the body work.

I need you advice on the following:

1) Has anyone had a rolling shell dipped in chemicals to basically destroy all the rust?

2) Has anyone had a rolling shell sand blasted?

Which one would you recommend, option 1) or option 2)  ?????

The car needs to be ready until next May as its expected at the Dacia annual meeting in Romania, Brasov. Word has spread of a RHD Shifter and I have been formally invited. Another "exotic" example that should be making an appearance is the only Dacia in New York. The guy is shipping it over......and I thought i'd lost my head :-)

Here's some quick picks of the rust:

To be honest i really don't think sand / shot blasting is a good idea, you'll be left with pretty much nothing.

I had my Capri chemically dipped, it's a lot gentler on (what was left) of the metal.

This was done through the restorer i was paying, i guessed that they knew what they were doing better than a clueless get like me!
