Audi coupe project!

Hi gang,

Some may recall HillmanImps recent thread about his busted Audi coupe that needed rehoming... Well a nice guy called Brian from Shiplyland recovered it from Leeds back to Stoke for me yesterday. Unfortunately it was dark so I couldn't have much of a play with it and didn;t take any pictures.

In the darkness it felt and tasted VERY nice. And it's red, which is my fave colour. Basically, i'ts a beaut and Iove it.

It has some random electrical problem meaning it won't run, the battery is also flat as F00K, this may be connected. It's also full of water.

The plan is to try and get it running, BUT what I really want to do is buy a donor Audi 80 and convert it to TDi power for veg munching coupe motoring.

I'm guessing it can't be impossible to do, the bolt pattern on the gearbox may even be the same and I read the 2.6 gear ratios are OK for a diesel lump. I don;t want to mess about taking dash boards out to sort the electrics so i'm hoping it will be case of connecting up the 3 or so wires a diesel donkey needs to run then simply driving round in circles, laughing and picking up hoes.

Either that or just run and enjoy it as Audi intended, i.e A 2.6 V6 pez.

I'll end this post with a MASSIVE BIG YOSELF UP (or whatever the kidz say) to HillmanImp for his huge generosity. Thankyou.

Tdi power needs many wires and ecus and things. There is such thing as an Audi 80 td with a mechanical pump but donors may be harder to come by.

TDi Sounds interesting   might just be easier to use the engine & box from an 80 or Passat  from the same era .

Has this got the Procon type safety system ?

The water leaks into the cabin will be

1) bonnet release cable / bulkhead grommet

2) fuse box gasket/mastic sealing cord

3) pollen filter housing gasket/mastic sealing cord

4) doors - the bits of rubber at each end of the glass/door card

5) rear light clusters - the sealing mastic cord - this cord is still available from Audi )£40 for 4 mtrs

Had a few of these coupes, they are luverlee  :-)

Nice work!

I had an Audi 80 diesel and couldn't un-recommend the engine enough, though.

*Edit: How about some blue sky thinking out of the box, AS style? Get onto Willbuttonwork, buy his eBay epic 306 and lob the Lucas pumped engine into the Aldi.

and you lot were slagging rochdale

youve def got an audi problem 100 then this :D

Love 80's and love the Coupe's even more..

[anorak on] technically, the coupe was based on the 90 [anorak off]

I did some research on this before as I want a Scirocco tdi and the only simple conversion is using the early td engine found in mk2 Golf GTD's, some Passat's, a few mk3 Golf's, and the odd 80, sorry but I can't remember the engine codes to look for. TDi 90/110BHP conversions need more wiring and ecu stuff. Many people have done these, but they're more complicated.

Before buying a donor do lots of research.

The 1.6TD in a mark 2 Goof can hardly move it. I don't imagine it'd be much cop in a Coupe. My uncle's bird has an French market GTD avec intercooler, and it's a bit of a slug, too.

GTDs do respond (with an unholy amount of smoke) to a bit of old school pump messing.

I read that thread, the greasy bits look easy but the rest looks a bit of a ball ache, although he's added cruise control and aircon to his for added complexness.

AAZ would be the way forward, probably easier to find one in a golf than an 80. Will bolt up to your box but sump, mounts, ancillaries etc will be different.

IVC have left the battery connected. The tits, I told them not to. It was charged when I took it there a couple of weeks ago. I hope its not knacked and can be recharged, let me know if not I will take it up with them. That shitty TOAD alarm runs the fooker down like a drumming bunny does on a Chinese Doorasell battery.

The water is getting in behind the seats because there are 2 rubber seals at the top of the door at the back are perished. Was never too much of a problem when I was using the car all the time but when its been left in a yard for several months its built up. Plus I noticed the drivers door had been left open when I went an paid IVC the other day before it was picked up but that might have only been for a short time (or a lot I have no idea).

Here is an example from the S2 forum:

The ones on the car are well knacked but it only lets in a trickle, but when the car is not being used it can build up.

The mess under the dash is a new problem. It never leaked there before. Volksworks left the car for some time and someone left the fuse box open PLUS the drainholes have been blocked whilst its sat there laid up by them pretending to work on it compounding the problem. I think water has come in through the fusebox all over the floor hence the puddles and probably causing the non running.

Whilst Tim does not have any photos of it being delivered, I do have a photo I took just before it was moved.

VERY sad to see it go but there was no way in hell I had the time, inclination or ability to get it going again so I am glad its gone to someone who can try and get it going again.

My pain has been slighly eased by the fact I have now got this though:

Details will follow on this purchase.

When my 1995 Audi V6 convertible stopped running the previous owners son-in-law, a Honda dealer mechanic took the fuse box apart but it turned out to be a knackers fuel pump.

I have now sold my V6 coupe but there is no interest in the convertible so I am keeping it.

They are great looking motors, good luck getting it going!

Had a bit of a play with this today. First job was to get the water our of the footwells. This was done using the well proven method of yoghurt pot, sponge and newspapers.

Closer inspection of the coupe showed the fuel filler cap and a few relays had been felched by persons unknown. After refitting the rocker covers and decyphering the mysterious toad alarm I turned the engine over.. No start.

Theres fuel at the fuel rail but no spark.

Posted

No spark when you take lead off and earth it while cranking? I presume these don't have coil packs?

Posted

What relays? That really boils my piss that. Will no doubt be that bloody Volksworks, the wankers. Not only did they fuck the car they robbed bits off it too. Let me know and I will head down there and get some more and another fuel filler cap and possibly an assault charge.

Forgot to take in the paperwork to work the other day but defo will one day this week and post it over to you with some replacement parts.

Posted

It has 3 coil packs, each feeding 2 plugs. I stuck a spare plug in a lead, earthed it and found no spark while cranking.

The missing relays appear to be the rad fan relay and the rad fan delay relay, although I've no idea if these were even fitted to this model or not.

I can see why they changed the ecu. On my old BMW I got fuel pressure but no spark or signal at the injectors and it's because the ecu had been frazzled by incoming rain water. You'll need to see if you can get your hands on one of those injector testers to see if the injectors are getting a pulse.

Posted

I don't know if it's getting a pulse at the injectors or not. Could I not just stick a multi-meter across the terminals as it's cranking?

It comes with a spare ECU, along with the original.

It would be good to know what has been tested and what hasn't The cam sensor is meant to be the main culprit for no-spark incidents but I can't believe it hasn't been tested already.

Just had a thought..  There's a socket "thing" on the dash that a touchkey fobwould have to be pushed in to before starting, however there isn't a fob on the keyring.

It's this type here..

I'm guessing it's another immobiliser, I don't think it's anything to do with the TOAD device also fitted.

Nay. The pulse is so quick it's unlikely to show up on a digital meter.

This sort of thing is normally used.

I personally would whip out an injector and crank with the injector injecting to air so I could look for injection and save myself £15.

Beware when swapping ECUs about as this most likely has a factory immobiliser which would need coding.

Hola Tim. I will tell you what they told me. There are 2 crank sensor wires. Both have apparently been replaced and the old ones should be on the car? Have a look and see if they look new or if I need to raise the anger level to batshit mental.

Apparently according to IVC the base of one of the coil packs was that rusty, it was not earthed hence the original problem. I got the new ECU for Volkworks and they said they were then getting a weak spark but I think they were fobbing me off.

Posted

I never used one of those key alarm things, just the big fob as you say. Not sure what the other thing is. I forgot about that TBH.

It looks like the original ECU has been refitted as it has the reg number written on it in black marker. The "spare" is in the footwell and has "Audi 2.6 V6" written over it.
