Is it also less noisy on the new wheels?

Er, not really. It's a van. Vans have very little interior trim, so noises drum and bounce around.

STEP AWAY FROM THE MINEFIELD.

DO IT SLOWLY, DO IT NOW.

Not sure about the wheels.

I am, but I understand they are just a temporary measure to make it driveable at all.

Far worse crimes than those wheels could be committed to this van.  Tropical fruit, for example.

'S fine. I just won't buy tyres from eBay again.

Stripes and pineapple sticks are coming off.

After my van/beacon issues, check how secure yours is in case your van tries to throw it at a learner driver.

Did some van tidying last night.

Other than emptying the 6000 empty packets of B&H Gold from behind the seats, I found a complete CV boot, three spark plugs and a Pioneer head unit.

Got a loom adaptor and the sodding thing works! It even has an AUX input.

Inscrutable heating controls.

It's also an old skool diesel, which means you have give it revs aplenty to make any kind of progress - especially as it was pulling a much taller tyre that it was designed for (175 65 14 instead of a 155 70 14).

Should be 155x14, I think 175/65x14 would actually be slightly lower rolling radius than standard.

Do you know the width of those wheels? I think they are 106 rallye steelies. The 175/65 tyres give a 12mm shorter sidewall than a 155/80.

What odds can I have on the van having different colour paint under the stripes? I'm calling blue.

IIRC, 106 Rallye S1 wheels were 5.5x14, S2 ones were 6x14.

S2 steels were 6" and ran 175 \ 60 tyres on the 106 Rallye. That's what I'm going to have fitted. It's currently on 185 \ 65 \ 14s, which dents the performance notably.

So 155\80\14, then?

I've only just caught this thread, the van looked vaguely familiar and it was confirmed with the photo of it in Huntingdon.  I used to work there and come up with ever more creative ways of driving to Stukely Meadows by avoiding the A14 so I've probably seen it loads of times.

You have a magnificent knob btw.

So 155\80\14, then?

155SR14 = Morris Minor = expensive

155/80R14 81T = contemporary replacement = a lot cheaper and wider selection

Dads bx had that size originally , so we fitted 165 70 14 which is a similar height and lots cheaper

DISCO KNOB 2000 has arrived.

Wooden KNOB will preserved for future generations. "Tools and implements of ancient man" will be the museum title. Archaeologists will find it in my dessicated hand and wonder as to its true purpose, talisman-esque, for years to come.

"For many years, the wreckage of this vehicle, alluded to in ancient brown text simply as the "KNOB VAN", has puzzled researchers. Propelled by a total-loss oiling system, we can only imagine the intricate and expletive-filled conversations that took place within its frail steel cabin.

We are at a loss as to why brand-new tyres were fitted, and why it appears to have been driven at speed through the window of a Citroen showroom. Its owner has never been traced, although we believe the legend "FUCK OFF BRIAN" to have been written by his hand."
