Been offered a 2.0 New (old) Beetle in PX

Hi I wonder if someone could help as I've just been offered a 2000 VW beetle in PX against my current car plus cash my way, but don't know much about them apart that it's based on a MK IV golf..

My girlfriend is over the moon about such a car and it's only a cheap one with low miles and the body is bit scruffy or so I'm told by the vendor and just wondered if anyone would know if there's anything to look for on one.

It doesn't sound very autoshite to me as it uses witchcraft to unlock the doors instead of a key plus you press a button on the dash and ice cold air comes through the vents and I'm scared by such technology lol.

Check the sills for rust/ pog cos they get dented all the time on high kerbs and gateposts etc.

Condition / colour and spec is all . Make sure the vase is in there.

They are not as good as the vw hype

Mrs Hertz is on her 3rd, she has had a 1.4 and 2 x 1.6. I believe the 2.0 is a little thirsty as it's quite a heavy car.

As so happens she has just bashed the sill so it needs to go in for paint soon. No problems with any of them really apart from a battery or 2 and a wet passenger carpet due to leaves in the scuttle panel blocking the drain holes. Oh the 2nd one she got had done 150k miles as well so they should truck on for a good while.

A proper birds car, I point and laugh when I see blokes driving them.

All I can advise is that you don't attempt to make a Volksrod out of one, not so well suited to it as the older versions.

The problem I have is I might have to end up driving it as I normally end up only keeping one car insured and taxed at a time so it looks like my faithful old A4 is going to have a bit of a longer rest this year...

My girlfriend wants me to get rid of Arnie the 1995 A4 as well as the convertible as I don't use him much these days but I can't part with him as he's been a faithful old car for the last 4 years ownership and is near immaculate with only 60 something on clock and I keep telling her he's only worth about as much as an Xbox so once the garage roof is repaired he's going to get tucked away till the time someone in the family needs a decent car.

So it looks like I may have to wear some sort of disguise when driving the Beetle.

A roofrack and pineapple might distract people from looking at you driving it.

Or maybe just get a fanny?

I think the bodywork on the Beetle has seen better days so I can have the pineapple look for free all I need is the roof rack and some steel wheels and I'm sorted lol..post-9282-0-61913700-1403599748_thumb.jpg

I actually like 'em and one is on my bucket list. Colleague at work has one with the compulsory sill dent. She loves it and I pester her to sell it to me.

They look more 'Beetle' than the more recent version.

Sound car IMHO.

Mrs S had a 2.0 with sill dent. It was ok, but thirsty, not as fast as the fuel bill would have you think and the boot is tiny. Wasn't a bad car, though, although they're getting cheap now.

I've picked up the old girl and it does drive well and has only done 65000 miles..

It has the compulsory sill dent on the drivers side and a few buttons have been pulled out here and there the only problem is that I don't want to get carried away with this one to try and turn it into a minter.

But it looks quite good with the rear windows blacked out but the previous owner really neglected the old girl and the sticker in the door says it's been on VW long life servicing so I think it's going to need a good engine flush and service before I tackle the dents.post-9282-0-71531500-1403640665_thumb.jpgpost-9282-0-16530200-1403640712_thumb.jpgpost-9282-0-30840900-1403640750_thumb.jpg

At the moment the beetle stands me in at £750

Aye, VW Long Life servicing is a bit harsh - around 20k intervals. I know the diesels can go even longer based on various sensors telling the ECU how hard it's been driven so it delays pinging up the service light, perhaps the petrols do too. Either way, that's a long time on the same oil.

See everything written in the Mk4 Golf question thread, basically. Not too bad on rot, even better resale values to daddy's girls (yes they're getting cheap, but the first ones are cracking on 15 years old), all the same stuff about the engines chewing coil packs and window mechanisms being crap. A Golf in a party frock, basically.

I would, actually. I'd probably have one of these over a Golf or an A3, just because. And I wouldn't do anything "bonkers" and "retro cool" to it like roofracks, fake rust, chrome wheeltrims and all that shit because that makes me want to hurt squirrels. I actually think they're not a bad car.

My brother used to have one, it was a pain in the arse doing any work on it! His had a bodykit etc and I did like it apart from the 2.0 engine! I would have one, with any other engine...
