Greenwich - London's only car manufacturer I think. Site now a block of flats.

Actually 123 Calvert road is still there, it's located in the yard behind 125, accessed under the arch at 121. If I ever get my Heron on the road I will be taking it back there...

No not at all, I remember it well. Don’t know if you know but Frank Skinner is a massive fan of his & did a really good documentary about his life. I’m sure it’s findable on sumat or other

amazing! That's the first proper high-res picture I've seen of that car and I need that for my book! Lucky it's in a photo library. That's a genuinely really useful post, thanks for sharing.

Edit: They have three other incredible photos of the same car, so amazing!

I can't remember where I found that now...

Ah edit I do - it's in a public archive of amazing pictures of @eddyramrod's manor Barrow-in-Furness.

The new news story featured in the Guardian here:

https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2024/feb/09/archive-photos-capture-life-in-england-north-west

The pictures have an amazing vitality which seems to not exist in the same way today. People just loving living.

But a lot is the halcyon days pre-WWI.

That'll be the Sankey Archive then, a splendid collection by a local photgrapher and his sons.  And yes, it's now open to the public online.  @barrett if you plan to use them in a book I would suggest clearing it with the archive people first.

It's a bit unclear - I went down to have a look. The yard is private with metal gates and at the rear there are a pair of modern houses - but these might comprise the footprint of the former factory.

On the OS map of 1920 it all looks a bit more amalgamated with the building on the main road.

No sign of anything relating to the former use. The fate of the majority of 'motor works' in London.

When I'm out and about I often look to see what's left. This is the fate of the former 'Windover' coachworks in Hendon...where these beauties were made.
