It's at it again....

After cleaning out the EGR on my vectra C a week ago things had been ok.

Until yesterday.

On the A483 heading for Wrexham the car stuttered once, like when being starved of fuel.

A while later the EML came on - car now lacks power, as if little or no boost.

I am rapidly getting fed up - it's no good having a car that cannot be trusted.Maybe time to say goodbye.

Depressingly, there is not much available - equivalent cars of the same age have over 100k and are expensive, anything with less than this is advertised as low mileage and priced accordingly. My car has 66k.

Petrol could be the future.

I gave up on diesel engines when they replaced the usually trouble-free mechanical injection pump with a whole load of fragile tat that throws a hissy fit when battery voltage drops/ the wind changes direction.

I know you can't totally block the EGR on these but I had success with my Alfa (same engine) using a restrictor plate; basically a blank with a 8mm hole drilled in it.

Alternatively you can have the EGR operation written out of the 'map' but I wouldn't like to comment on cost.

We've gone petrol but LPG converted for these very reasons, that was after nigh on 30 years of trouble free ownership of idi Diesels with tough as old boots mechanical pumps.

Bren when you've cleaned the EGR out again, i suggest you try running a double dose of Millers DPS4 semi permanently in the fuel, worth the relatively inexpensive experiment.

I purchased some of the millers stuff this week and put it in.

I have just spoken to the guy at the local vauxhall specialist - he said it sounds EGR related and they are a PITA.

They blank them off and delete them from the map.

If you can blank them off and delete them it just shows how effective they actually - just like swirl flaps - another pointless gimmick.

Is it a 2.0 or 2.2 ?

Check and double check ALL the vac pipes especially the small bits that join the nylon lines to the componants.

Also on the bonnet landing panel there are 2 vac solenoids for the imrc flaps and the throttle flaps , between the 2 is an atmospheric vent filter , take that off and try it without . They are prone to blocking and it shuts the throttle flap down at random times

Swirl flaps the ticking time bomb, electric parking brakes, stop start keyless go shit, automated manual abortion gearboxes, you couldn't pay me enough to have any of the crap.

Any one of those poxy things goes wrong and you'll be into 4 figures minimum, and thats without the rest of the dubious tat stuffed in now.

Egr valves are like your appendix. When it goes wrong you'll be bent over. Just whip it out and be done with it.

I've blanked the EGR on my JTd multipla and it's fine.

ERG

(Arabic: عرق الشبي‎)  Morocco has two Saharan ergs – large seas of dunes formed by wind-blown sand.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve. Like most things today, it's to do with emissions. Laws are to blame, arguably more so than the car manufacturers. There are EU penalties in place for manufacturers selling a car emitting CO2 over a certain amount.

I wouldn't want cars these days to return to simple spark ignition with just a silencer exhaust, as where would that leave us 'shiters?

Bren - what is your annual mileage? Under 10,000 and a diesel doesn't make sense these days.

I do about 13k a year. If I did less it would be petrol all the way.

It was the EGR at fault - I had to have it blanked off and removed from the vehicles map. Cost £180.

I'm going to run my 2003 Blingo HDi90 for as long as is humanly possible.
