New series. Life on Mars star Philip Glenister and renowned car designer Ant Anstead scour barns and lock-ups across the nation on a mission to restore six classic motors to their former glory. They begin by tracking down a rare Ford Escort Mexico, and while Ant takes on the mammoth task of rebuilding the rusty vehicle, Philip explores the story behind one of the most beloved British cars ever built, meeting passionate boy racers who are preserving the Escort spirit.

I wish manufacturers could make a car as close to the spirit of the Escort Mexico. :)

Unfortunately old fords tend to have a bad rust trap behind the front number plate.........which extends all the way to the rear number plate.

Well forty minutes in and we get the usual myth describing the Marina and Allegro as among the worst cars ever made. Even forty years later they can't help bashing the former British car industry!

I heavily suspected it would be that sort of programme, hence I have the Antiques Roadshow on instead...

I was all prepared to dismiss this as yet another dull rehash of the same old thing but it's not bad so far, plenty of good background info on the car and Philip Glenister is a good choice for host.

Good to see they've been persuaded to keep it fairly original, rather than going ahead with the plan of spots, stripes 'n' shiz.

For those missing it, it starts again at 9pm on Channel 4+1 (ch 13).

Nice job on the Mexico. I think it's the same shade of red (Sebring) of my parents' Cortina 1600XL estate owned when I was a nipper. 8)

It looks nice no doubt about that and they have done a good job. I've just had a message from a woman I know who always laughs and is scornful at my car obsession telling me she is really enjoying the programme and that I am rubbing off on her!

I presume they will not be restoring a Talbot Horizon next week!

got bored 5 minutes in around the time PG had the hugely original idea of turning it into a rally car replica.

Looks like the Landy and then the Mini. Cliches all round

I know.

I owned a MK2 Escort Ghia.

Nice car, though.

Spoiler Alert: That didn't happen.

Turned out alright. They didn't say what it made in the auction though.

How could this thread ever have gone any way but exactly the way it did?

I think it would of been far more interesting, to me at least, if they'd shown more of the actual restoration. Instead of a load of 'arold shand alikes doing burnouts in car parks.

Got a feeling next weeks landrover episode will be full of chequer plate and OLLI atseholes.

I enjoyed the programme, though how 'original' that car was after having  a new front end and roof is anyone's guess. Still, it was a decent programme and enjoyable, looking forward to next week.

From the clip of next week, it looks like he starts out wanting zebra stripes and all that crap, and is dissuaded again in favour of originality. I see a theme developing.

Fantastic program more please and I really think having Philip Glenister as the presenter really works as he comes across as a bit of a car fan I'm looking forward to the next one..

I know it's not the same but I've really got bored with watching top gear recently and usually have trouble keeping my eyes glued to the set on a Sunday evening and this program is a bit of fresh air for the car nut with some all time great cars being rebuilt properly instead of a cheap blow over and an oil change.

It's if the production company looked at classic car rescue and saw where it went wrong and decided to get a decent presenter rename it and do the program properly.

I liked it. It's about as good as your going to get from a car program made for the masses and not just car pervs like us.

That mexico police car was brilliant. I'm surprised it didn't topple over with the size of the sign on the roof.
